67-Year-Old Man Dies in Rubber Plantation Hut Fire
A 67-year-old man died in a rubber plantation hut fire in Surat Thani province on August 11, with police suspecting his drug-addicted son may have caused the blaze.
A shocking incident in Surat Thani province left a 67-year-old man dead after a wooden hut in a rubber plantation caught fire. Police suspect the man's drug-addicted son may be responsible and are investigating the cause.
At 7 p.m. on August 11, 2025, Deputy Regional Police Commander Sirichai Suksasart received a report from Phra Saeng Police Station of the fire at an unnumbered rubber plantation hut in Moo 2, Sin Charoen Subdistrict, Phra Saeng District. One man was reported dead. He immediately dispatched officers, forensic specialists, eight investigators, and rescue personnel from Phra Saeng District to the scene.
The wooden hut was completely destroyed by fire. Inside the burned structure, investigators found the body of Chaliao, 67, and also located Suraporng, 36, identified as the victim's son, near the scene. Suraporng displayed signs consistent with drug use.
According to relatives interviewed by police, Chaliao and Suraporng were the only two living in the hut. Before the fire, Suraporng was acting erratically, and his father Chaliao attempted to warn him, but Suraporng did not respond. Family members later learned that Chaliao had died in the fire.
Police initially questioned Suraporng, but his account was inconsistent. He is suspected of causing the fire and has been detained at Phra Saeng Police Station for further detailed questioning. The precise cause of the fire is pending results from forensic examination and autopsy.
