IMF Chief Cites Rama IX's Perseverance Wisdom at Bangkok Summit
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva invoked King Rama IX’s teachings on perseverance at the IMF‑World Bank 2026 annual meeting in Bangkok, praised the Thai royal barge display, and likened the world to a single boat facing shared challenges. She warned of simultaneous pressures from AI, geopolitics, war, debt, and high financing costs, while projecting global growth of 3.1 percent for 2026 with uneven country outcomes. Georgieva urged credible medium‑term fiscal plans, structural reforms, and preparation for AI‑driven changes to sustain progress.
Kristalina Georgieva thanked the Thai prime minister, deputy prime ministers, and ministers before highlighting the beautiful replica royal barge on display at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center. She said the barge symbolises that the world is now all in one boat, confronting shared challenges. Georgieva connected this image to the global economic outlook, citing simultaneous strains from artificial intelligence, geopolitical shifts, wars disrupting supply chains, energy prices, high public debt, and costly financing. Although the world economy remains resilient and is projected to grow 3.1 percent in 2026, close to earlier forecasts, the growth divergence is widening: countries affected by war see their outlooks trimmed, while those tied to AI supply chains receive stronger support. A major risk is the burden of public debt and high interest rates, which squeeze fiscal space, limit crisis response capacity, and raise borrowing costs for both governments and private sectors in global bond markets. Growth alone will not reduce debt; nations need credible medium‑term fiscal plans, price stability, and structural reforms to boost productivity while preparing for rapid AI‑driven economic restructuring. While AI offers new growth opportunities, the IMF warns of accompanying risks such as youth employment shifts, changing tax bases, financial market volatility, and cyber threats, urging each country to build suitable safeguards. In her closing remarks, Georgieva invoked King Rama IX’s royal speech: "Benefits and good success do not come by themselves; they must be gradually cultivated, accumulated, and strengthened over time, requiring time, perseverance, and continuity." She said this is the heart of the IMF’s work to raise living standards, demanding time, patience, and cooperation among the 191 member countries to achieve the common goal.
