An education scholar has called for the Ministry of Education to eliminate redundant provincial and regional education offices, arguing they duplicate roles, waste budgets, and create territorial conflicts without improving education quality. He has urged political leaders and decision-makers to undertake structural reform and reorganization to redirect resources toward student learning and school development.

Sompong Jittaradet, an education academic, commented on the cabinet's plan to abolish 11 support functions across the civil service. He said the operations of provincial education offices and regional education offices significantly overlap with education area offices and ministry inspectorates, and that these structures have failed to deliver meaningful benefits to national education quality in a cost-effective way, nor have they met their original objectives.

Sompong noted that while provincial and regional education offices were originally created to improve personnel management and streamline organizational structure, in practice they have only increased the number of civil servants and expanded staff positions. They have also created territorial conflicts, particularly competition for power between provincial offices and area offices, leaving regional agencies working without coordination.

He argued the structures are not cost-effective, functioning mainly as channels for career advancement, with most funding consumed by salaries and positions rather than benefiting students or schools. He described them as redundant bureaucratic fat within the education system serving only a small group.

He acknowledged that provincial and regional offices do provide some value in monitoring and implementing central policies and initiatives such as the Thailand Zero Dropout programme and tracking education innovation zones. However, compared to their staffing levels and budgets, they deliver insufficient value and fail to justify their expenditure.

Sompong said political leaders have long avoided addressing this issue. He called on political leaders and decision-makers to show courage in reforming and restructuring these offices, redirecting budget and resources toward genuine improvements in student and school quality.

He advised the Ministry of Education to seek consensus on structural and operational grounds, especially as it prepares for broader civil service reform aimed at reducing civil servant numbers and improving work efficiency. Without internal agreement, he warned, education decentralization efforts will stall further. He emphasized the urgent need to reform ministry structures and management systems to maximize education system quality and performance.

The Board of Investment (BOI) met with the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce in Bangkok to reaffirm support for Japanese companies maintaining and expanding their investment base in Thailand. According to BOI Secretary-General Nakharin Tedsathirsakdi, on August 13, 2025, JETRO Bangkok Chairman Abe Ichiro and Southeast Asia regional representatives, along with Japanese Chamber of Commerce Bangkok President Konda Hiroyasu and delegation members, discussed measures to support Japanese firms' continued confidence in Thailand over the next five years, targeting over 390 billion baht in cumulative investment.

Over the past five years (2020 to mid-2025), 1,380 investment promotion projects worth approximately 396 billion baht have received approval. A survey of 504 Japanese companies covering both manufacturing and service sectors revealed cautious sentiment toward short-term economic conditions, with the Diffusion Index at minus 6, down from zero in the second half of 2024, due to pressure from raw material prices and shipping costs. However, demand in the semiconductor industry remains strong, with electronics and digital sectors expected to continue expanding.

Regarding investment plans, 23 percent of Japanese companies intend to increase investment in 2025, while 48 percent plan to maintain current levels, focusing on upgrading existing production base efficiency. Over 59 percent plan to replace machinery, 31 percent will improve machine efficiency, and 22 percent will invest in digital transformation. Between 2023 and mid-2025, over 400 Japanese-backed companies submitted applications for the Smart and Sustainable Industry promotion scheme, representing more than 55 billion baht in investments.

Japanese companies are requesting government support in tax and finance incentives (29 percent), domestic market promotion (26 percent), and market expansion to third countries through free trade agreements (24 percent), reflecting a desire for greater business flexibility amid global trade uncertainty. The BOI will collaborate with JETRO, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce, and Japanese businesses to retain existing investments while promoting higher-value-added activities focused on technology and innovation, labor skills development, clean energy, and improved business conditions to enable continued Japanese business expansion from Thailand.

LG Electronics projects Thailand's major appliance market will reach 80 billion baht in 2025, supported by extended hot weather, demand for larger products, and AI technology, though consumer purchasing power remains under pressure. The company achieved first-half sales of 8 billion baht, up nearly 10 percent, and is on track for its full-year target of 18 billion baht with 10 percent growth.

On August 13, Amnuay Singchan, head of marketing at LG Electronics Thailand, said that while consumer purchasing power remains a concern, the appliance market still has growth potential because these are essential goods. Consumer buying behavior has shifted, with more research and price-comparison done online, and consumers are willing to pay extra for higher quality, technology, and better user experience rather than simply seeking the cheapest option.

LG estimates Thailand's 2025 major appliance market breakdown as follows: air conditioners at 24 billion baht, televisions at 19 billion baht, refrigerators at 16 billion baht, and washing machines at 15.8 billion baht. These four segments together form the core of the major appliance market.

Amenuay noted that a key positive factor this year is weather conditions, particularly extended hot spells that persist even into the rainy season with high temperatures and alternating rain and heat. This has sustained strong demand for air conditioners and cooling products, showing better growth than last year when prolonged heat was less consistent.

Beyond weather, another market driver is consumer demand for products with more technology, particularly in TVs, refrigerators, and washing machines. Premium product segments grew about 30 percent in the first half, reflecting that some consumers still have purchasing power and are willing to pay for convenience, quality, and technology.

However, purchasing power that has not fully recovered remains a concern, causing consumers to spend more time researching before deciding. High costs of electronic components and chips could pressure manufacturers' costs. LG has planned supply chain management in advance to control costs and inventory while trying to maintain price levels so consumers can more easily afford its products.

In the first half of 2025, LG Thailand achieved sales of approximately 8 billion baht, growing nearly 10 percent year-on-year, with a full-year target of 18 billion baht, or about 10 percent growth. The company views first-half performance as on plan and has opportunities to reach its targets.

The B2B business grew about 12 percent, especially commercial HVAC systems and commercial information displays. The LG Subscription service more than doubled its user base from the same period last year, reflecting positive response to ownership models and long-term service care. For the second half, the company will pursue its "LG Make It Yours. Make It Easy" vision to simplify daily life and give consumers more autonomy, transitioning from an appliance retailer to a Smart Life Solution Company that brings technology to reduce burden on customers.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin has launched a crackdown on illegal timber processing operations, ordering simultaneous raids on eight wood mills in Nakhon Ratchasima after residents complained of dust and noise from factory operations. The minister vowed that the ministry would enforce laws firmly, transparently, and fairly without allowing capitalists or influential figures to exploit national forest resources or cause public hardship.

Chumphon, a resident of Non Sung District in Nakhon Ratchasima, filed a complaint after being affected by loud noise and fine dust from wood-processing factories. Following the report from Nikorn Sirisrojnant, director of the Forestry Department, Deputy Minister Nanthachat Suphangkul was assigned to investigate and coordinate with relevant agencies.

The Forestry Department coordinated with the Forest Protection and Fire Control Office, the Forest Resource Management Division 8 in Nakhon Ratchasima, and the Central Investigation Bureau to execute the operation. Teams divided into eight groups with court search warrants and raided eight wood-processing mills in the Klong area of Non Sung District.

The inspection found that all eight facilities were still operating machinery to process timber. Although some operators claimed they purchased wood from other areas to manufacture and sell OTOP furniture and community enterprise products, document checks revealed they lacked proper wood-processing factory licenses. Some processed wood also lacked correct supporting documentation.

Authorities immediately took legal action, seizing 99 machines, 9,278 pieces of processed wood totaling 29.955 cubic meters, and bringing 22 suspects under control. The Non Sung Police Station is handling the case according to law.

Initial charges were filed under the Forestry Act of 2484 (1941), Section 48, for jointly processing wood, operating an unlicensed wood mill, and unlawfully possessing protected timber without permission, with penalties under Section 73.

Chumphon reaffirmed that the ministry's policy is clear: capitalists, influential figures, and criminal networks will not be allowed to exploit legal loopholes to profit from forest resources or harm the public. Every complaint will be investigated, and violations will be pursued decisively. Forest resources belong to the country, and citizens must be protected from both forest destruction and the impact of illegal operations. The ministry will pursue proactive investigations, genuine prosecutions, and trace operations to their roots.

Meanwhile, Wichit Kijwiratt, Deputy Governor of Nakhon Ratchasima, who monitored operations, stated that the province will convene relevant agencies to discuss urgent measures to ensure wood-processing operations comply with law and minimize public impact as quickly as possible.

The Thai national football team gathered at Suvarnabhumi International Airport on August 13 to prepare for their trip to Singapore for the first leg of the 2026 ASEAN Cup semi-finals against Singapore. Thailand finished Group B as champions and face Singapore, Group A runners-up, in a two-leg home-and-away knockout format to advance to the final.

Head coach Anthony Hudson said the team had prepared well throughout the week and would have one final training session before facing Singapore.
