Afghan Girl Learns of Sponsor's Death After Rescue
6 Aug Khaosod

A sad turn of events unfolded as Nasatala, a rural Afghan girl, learned of the death of Hulun Solo, the Thai content creator who had promised to help her pursue a medical degree. Thai physician Dr. Thaniey Thaniyawan (Doctor Tany page) had announced plans to sponsor Nasatala's medical education after Hulun discovered her exceptional aptitude and dream of becoming a doctor during travels to Afghanistan. Thai nationals and UN colleagues in the country assisted in locating the girl, coordinating the search through the "Little Girl on the Cold Mountain" page.

When UN official Sharif finally located Nasatala, she was still recovering from a recent accident with visible bruising on her face. The timing was particularly heartbreaking—she learned of Hulun's death on the same day. In response, Nasatala and her family offered prayers for Hulun to rest in God's embrace. The search team successfully connected Nasatala with Dr. Thaniyawan, and officials reported she was delighted to hear of the sponsorship opportunity, given her family's financial hardship. The coordinated effort by Thai volunteers and UN staff demonstrated solidarity in fulfilling Hulun's original promise to support the girl's medical aspirations.

Rescue Teams Recover Body of Legendary Climber Nirmal Purja
6 Aug Khaosod

Pakistani search teams backed by military helicopters recovered the body of renowned British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja and three other missing climbers on Wednesday, bringing the total number of bodies recovered from Broad Peak to seven nearly a week after an avalanche killed a 10-member international climbing expedition on July 30. The Alpine Club of Pakistan confirmed that the recovery operation was one of the most technically challenging rescue missions ever conducted on Broad Peak, with the bodies of Purja, Chinese climber Zong Wang, and Nepali climbers Nima Sherpa and Kilu Sherpa successfully transported to base camp. Three other bodies had been recovered and brought down on August 1.

Local officials said the bodies will be transported to a military hospital in Skardu, Gilgit-Baltistan, once weather conditions improve. Meanwhile, in Kathmandu, family members, friends, and supporters of the climbers held candlelight vigils and memorial ceremonies.

Mountaineering accidents are relatively common in Pakistan due to frequent avalanches, ice falls, and rockslides, combined with rapidly changing weather at high altitudes. In 2025, a Chinese climber died when struck by rockfall while descending K2, the world's second-highest mountain. Typically, the bodies of foreign mountaineers who die on Pakistani peaks are only recovered if requested by families and governments; if families refuse, bodies are often left at the site of death.

On his Facebook page, Kong Huay Rai posted a farewell message with Punch's photo saying, "You've gone to be with your mom and dad now. Potter will be looked after by me and Bell." He continued, "I'm announcing that Punch was in a car accident and has traveled very far away, never to return. I ask for the merit that we have created to guide her on her journey peacefully." Punch was a foster daughter whom Kong Huay Rai took in after she survived the Sathon Building collapse that killed both her biological parents, leaving her with only her grandmother and 7-year-old brother. During her time under Kong Huay Rai's care, he previously shared in an interview that "this child never once asked for a single baht, she is hardworking and responsible, living like any other child, but with one difference—she builds her own future with her own hands. Who would think a child who just became a foster child of this household could have such a strong heart?" Punch was in her third year studying marketing management at Phichit Province's University Service Center and was praised as an admirable student who studied and worked part-time while maintaining good grades.

Police Kill Two Suspects in Tak Bai Shooting Investigation
5 Aug Khaosod

Special Operations units in Narathiwat Province have concluded the investigation into the shooting of Tak Bai Police investigators by fatally confronting two suspects, Samman, 34, and Abdulmuklis, 23, in Sukirin District on August 5. The two men were identified as key participants in the August 2 attack that killed two Tak Bai officers and wounded four others. During the siege operation, both suspects opened fire on officers first, triggering a gunfight that ended with their deaths.

Narathiwat Provincial Police Commander Prayong Kotsakha confirmed the case is now closed following sustained pursuit operations. He explained that return fire was necessary for self-defense after negotiations failed. In total, authorities have detained 13 individuals connected to the incident: 11 accomplices who harbored and aided the suspects' escape, and the two deceased suspects. All detainees will face prosecution.

The group is linked to multiple previous attacks, including an assault on Chao Airong Police Station on May 28, 2023, and a siege on a Buko Samui checkpoint in Rangae District, Narathiwat. While the Tak Bai case is now closed, police say they will continue investigating and apprehending remaining members of the Buko Samui checkpoint attack network.
