Aguirre Steps Down As Mexico Coach After World Cup Exit
Mexico coach Javier Aguirre resigned after the team's Round of 16 World Cup exit, losing 3-2 to England at home with 10 players on the field.
Javier Aguirre, Mexico's national team coach, faced the painful task of stepping down following the team's Round of 16 elimination at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Mexico, co-hosts of the tournament, concluded their World Cup campaign at the Round of 16 stage after losing 2-3 to England with 10 players remaining at Estadio Azteca on July 6.
Following the match, Aguirre, exiting his position as Mexico's coach for the third time, stated: "I wanted to say goodbye to the fans with a victory. It hurts a lot. We tried. The players must leave with their heads held high. We couldn't do it today. We missed our chances, but I want to thank them all."
Aguirre also expressed confidence that Rafael Márquez, who will take over as the new head coach, will lead the team to greater success. "I wish him all the best," Aguirre said. "He has more ability than I do, and he will certainly do better than me."
