Four occupants were rescued, but his two‑year‑old granddaughter drowned after being underwater for over ten minutes. Police recovered the child’s body and are investigating the accident.
I Chachoengsao – Heartbreaking: A 49‑year‑old grandfather drove a pickup truck through the dark, rain‑slick roads caused him to lose control, veer off the curve and plunge into a pond. Four people were rescued with difficulty, but his two‑year‑old granddaughter could not be saved and drowned. The mother wailed, clutching the child’s body, heartbroken. 15 October 2026 – Pol. Lt. Col. Anurak Nakkhaen, investigator of Sanam Chai Khet Police Station, went to the scene after being notified by local resident Khun Phaen. Arriving, officers found a roadside woodland in Ban Saengtong, Village 14, Tha Kradan subdistrict, Sanam Chai Khet district, I Chachoengsao. They discovered the body of a two‑year‑old girl, with the mother and relatives embracing her and crying bitterly. Interviewed, Mr. Prasert Thiangthaisong, 49, tearful and dazed, said he is the grandfather of the deceased toddler. Before the crash he was driving an old pickup, pre‑1990 model without power steering, taking his family from Chanthaburi province to visit a monk at a temple in Tha Kradan subdistrict, hoping the monk could cure his daughter’s unknown illness that doctors had not found. After meeting the monk, who advised him to see another monk at nearby Wat Pong Ket, darkness, rain and slippery roads caused the truck to skid, break through the curve and fall into the pond. Mr. Prasert, the driver and grandfather, said he was shocked, first pulling out his daughter, then his wife, then his grandson, struggling in deep water, before finally reaching for his two‑year‑old granddaughter, who had been submerged for more than ten minutes and died from lack of oxygen. Pol. Lt. Col. Anurak, after completing his inspection, ordered the Pohm Sanam Chai Khet rescue team to send the child’s body to Sanam Chai Khet Hospital for autopsy and had the four survivors taken to the police station for further questioning.
