Asian Games double gold medalist Puripol Boonson revealed why he still chose to compete in the national championships despite his elite status.
The 70th Thailand Athletics Championships for the His Majesty the King's and Her Majesty the Queen's Cups, 2026 (MEA – Thailand Athletics Championships 2026), ran October 29 to November 3, 2026 at the National Athletics Center, Athletics Association of Thailand, Sam Khok District, Pathum Thani Province. On October 31, the highlight was the men's 100 meters where "Biw" Puripol Boonson, Asian Games double gold medalist, competed. In the first round, Puripol ran comfortably to finish first with 10.66 seconds, the best time in the heats, advancing to the semifinals. In the semis, Biw remained unfazed, finishing first again with 10.45 seconds to reach the final as expected.
In the final, Puripol started behind but once he found his rhythm, Asia's number one sprinter accelerated to seize the championship with 10.36 seconds, winning this event for the second time. Second place went to Thawatchai Himaiad, another Thai national team sprinter from the Air Force, with 10.49 seconds, and Pirawat Aendu finished third with 10.62 seconds.
After the race, Puripol said he was happy to win the title. He entered this competition intending to inspire younger athletes, noting that many juniors participated this year and he was glad to play a part in motivating them. "The time is okay considering I finished the Asian Games and haven't trained at all because I wanted to rest, so it went according to plan."
Puripol added that this year many more juniors recognized him, some even calling him their 'FC' (favorite celebrity). He was happy to inspire them. In the past, the Athletics Association may not have developed much, but now Thailand has runners ranked among the world's top. He's glad Thai sprinters can compete globally and hopes to help Thai athletics awaken, with a new generation of runners rising in the future.
