Millionaire Businessman's Lucky Blessing: Thai Ghost Movies Screened for Spirits Over Three Nights at Forest Ordination Ceremony

A wealthy Nakhon Ratchasima businessman fulfilled a vow by screening Thai ghost films for spirits over three days at a forest temple, after winning nearly one million baht from prayers granted at a previous merit ceremony.

1 May Khaosod

A Nakhon Ratchasima businessman made good on a vow by arranging screenings of Thai ghost films for spirits after receiving nearly one million baht in winnings from his earlier prayers at a forest ordination ceremony. The unusual merit-making event took place May 1 at Wat Mai Amphon in Suung Noen district, drawing large crowds of both devotees and lottery enthusiasts. According to Pichit Saekhoo, a representative of the Suang Saeng Tham Foundation, the businessman had previously participated in the third forest ordination ceremony and prayed to Kumarn Thong (a spirit child). After his wishes were granted, he returned to fulfill his vow through the merit-making ceremony. The three-day event featured nine Thai ghost films total—three films per day at a cost of 12,000 baht daily—screened specifically for the spirits of around 800 souls before a final merit transfer ceremony on May 3. The unconventional approach of "screening ghost movies for ghosts" captured widespread attention from locals and visitors. Lottery enthusiasts seized the opportunity to identify lucky numbers from the event details, including the nearly one million baht winnings, the 800 spirits, and the dates May 1-3 and the "3 days, 9 films" count. The foundation invited the public to participate in the final soul transfer ceremony, which would involve two cremation pyres separated by gender, with children and Kumarn Thong spirits cremated together on the female side, representing a blend of traditional Thai beliefs, faith, and merit-making practices.
