Government Orders Investigation Into Thalang Volunteers Accused of Extortion
Government investigators are probing volunteer checkpoint officers in Phuket's Thalang district for allegedly extorting money from residents, with the Interior Ministry warning of legal action if misconduct is confirmed.
The government has ordered an investigation into volunteer territorial defence members at the Thalang district checkpoint in Phuket after complaints of extorting money from residents. The allegations have sparked widespread social media discussion. Interior Ministry Deputy Permanent Secretary Pol Peer Suvannavee instructed the Phuket Governor and Thalang District Officer to expedite the probe and clarify facts to the public. If the investigation confirms the alleged misconduct, full legal action will be taken without exception, as such behaviour damages the institution and sets a poor example. Volunteers are tasked with assisting administration officials and police to maintain peace and security and protect public safety, not to exploit residents for personal gain. The Phuket Governor has suspended the accused officers and appointed two replacement volunteer teams totaling approximately 30 personnel to maintain continuous security operations in the area. Currently, relevant persons are being called to provide statements to confirm the facts. Other witnesses have already been interviewed, and testimony from victims is being gathered to complete the investigation. The province is treating all complaints seriously, basing its examination on facts, evidence, and legal procedures to ensure fairness to all parties.
