Bangkok Police Fine Tuk-Tuk Driver for Overcharging Russian Tourists
Bangkok police have fined a tuk-tuk driver 1,500 baht after he attempted to charge two Russian tourists 4,000 baht for a short ride but only received 400 baht. The driver admitted the overcharge and was also cited for driving without a license. Authorities have forwarded the case to the Land Transport Department for possible additional sanctions.
The driver, identified as 28-year-old Piyawat (surname withheld), admitted to demanding 4,000 baht from the two Russian tourists, aged 31 and 34, but said they only transferred 400 baht upon arrival. Police also found he could not produce a valid driver's license, leading to two charges: overcharging the legal fare (500-baht fine) and operating a public vehicle without showing his license (1,000-baht fine), for a total of 1,500 baht. Authorities have referred the case to the Land Transport Department to consider further penalties against the driver and the vehicle's registered owner.
