Championship Playoff Final Faces Potential Postponement as Southampton Comes Under Investigation
Southampton faces a potential disqualification hearing before the Championship playoff final on May 23 after being accused of improperly observing Middlesborough's training during their semi-final.
The English Championship playoff final is in jeopardy of not taking place as originally scheduled on May 23 due to an investigation into Southampton, one of the finalists. The EFL has accused Southampton of breaching rules by improperly observing Middlesborough's training during their semi-final, which finished 1-1 before Southampton won 2-1 in extra time. The EFL stated that the hearing would likely occur on or before May 19, with a ruling to be announced as quickly as possible, though the exact timeline remains unconfirmed. While the EFL's current plan is to hold the final as scheduled, the uncertainty surrounding the disciplinary process means the match date could change. Southampton will face Hull City in the final, but if found guilty, Southampton risks disqualification from the competition, with Middlesborough continuing preparations as a potential replacement.
