A dead Bryde's whale discovered stranded near Koh Samed Island on August 17 is under investigation by marine officials, who found the 10-meter male in advanced decomposition with no obvious cause of death.
Marine resource officials in Chachoengsao have launched an investigation into the death of a Bryde's whale carcass discovered stranded on rocks behind Koh Samed Island in Samet Subdistrict, Sattahip District, Chachoengsao Province on August 17. Local fishermen initially reported the find. The carcass was in an advanced state of decomposition, and the sex, age, and cause of death were unknown at the time.
The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources Region 2, in coordination with the Royal Thai Navy, Eastern Gulf of Thailand Marine and Coastal Research Center, and local tour boat operators, conducted an on-site examination and autopsy on the whale's remains. Initial veterinary examination confirmed the animal was a Bryde's whale, a fully mature male approximately 10 meters long. The carcass was severely decomposed. Examination of the digestive tract revealed no food remains or foreign objects.
Officials collected tissue samples and biological specimens for genetic analysis and comparative study. Evidence has been documented and filed with Sattahip Police as an official record for investigation purposes. Authorities will determine whether human activity was involved in the whale's death. If evidence suggests criminal conduct or unlawful involvement, legal proceedings will follow.
The Bryde's whale carcass represents significant marine resource data for the Sattahip area. Officials are conducting a thorough examination to establish the cause of death and determine appropriate handling procedures in accordance with scientific standards.
