Disaster Prevention Department Names 29 Provinces on Alert for Flash Floods and Flash Floods
Thailand's Disaster Prevention Department placed 29 provinces on alert for flash floods and overflowing streams between May 8-10 as heavy rainfall from monsoon winds threatens the North, Northeast, and South regions.
On May 8, 2025, Theeraphattana Kachamat, Director-General of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, announced that the Central Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Operations Center (CPMOC) has been monitoring weather conditions and assessing risk factors. Following a War Room meeting on May 7 to issue national disaster warnings, alerts have been issued for at-risk areas due to a high-pressure system and cold air mass from China moving to cover the Northeast region and the South China Sea, combined with southerly and southeasterly winds carrying moisture from the Gulf of Thailand and South China Sea covering northern Thailand.
Easterly winds covering the South and Gulf of Thailand will strengthen, causing heavy rainfall that may result in flash floods, overflowing streams, and water accumulation in the North, Northeast, and South regions between May 8-10, 2025.
Affected areas include:
Northern Region (15 provinces): Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampoon, Lampang, Phayao, Phrae, Nan, Uttaradit, Tak, Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet, Phitsanulok, Phetchabun, Uthai Thani
Northeastern Region (2 provinces): Loei, Chaiyaphum
Southern Region (12 provinces): Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang, Satun
The CPMOC, through the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, has coordinated with provinces and disaster prevention centers in at-risk areas to prepare for heavy rainfall that may cause flooding. Officials have been instructed to closely monitor weather conditions, rainfall amounts, and water situations, particularly in areas experiencing heavy or prolonged rainfall. The department has also ordered emergency response units and crisis management teams to be on standby 24/7.
Natural attractions, especially waterfalls and caves, will be closed if there is risk of disaster. Provinces are urged to use all communication channels to keep the public informed of weather updates and government information, and to warn residents in at-risk areas in advance so they can prepare and respond safely.
The public can monitor disaster alerts through the "THAI DISASTER ALERT" application available on iOS and Android, as well as through the official social media accounts of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department on Facebook and X @DDPMNews.
