Guard Falls Ill After Buying Shellfish Curry With Dirt Inside
A security guard fell ill after eating shellfish curry contaminated with dirt and mud from a vendor near Maejo University in Chiang Mai, sparking warnings about food hygiene standards at market stalls.
On September 21, a 20-year-old security guard from Mae Hong Son reported his experience to the media as a cautionary tale and to highlight hygiene problems at prepared-food vendors near Maejo University in Chiang Mai. The man purchased a spicy mussel curry in a takeaway container for 60 baht from a market stall near the university on the evening of September 19. Upon opening the dish back at his room, he took only one or two bites before detecting sand and a grainy texture. Upon inspection, he found three to four mussel shells packed with clay and mud inside. He immediately spat out all the food and within hours developed severe abdominal pain followed by continuous diarrhea for two days.
The complainant chose not to reveal his identity but decided to report the incident through the media to urge vendors and food businesses to exercise greater care and attention to food hygiene and the cleanliness of raw ingredients, as improper handling can pose serious health risks. He also warned other consumers to be especially cautious when eating shellfish dishes.
