Insurance Won't Cover Death From Illness, Only Accidents

An accident insurance policy covering a Georgia trip will only pay out if death resulted from accidents or homicide, not illness, the Consumer Protection Board confirmed on July 30.

Insurance Won't Cover Death From Illness, Only Accidents
30 Jul Khaosod

On July 30, 2025, Adisorn Pipattaworapong, the Legal and Audit Deputy Secretary-General of the Consumer Protection Board (CPU), stated on a news program that Hualun Solo had one travel accident insurance policy covering the Georgia trip with a coverage limit of 5 million baht. The policy protects against accidents and homicide only.

Adisorn explained that pre-existing medical conditions are not covered under the accident policy, though life insurance policies typically cover death from any cause. To file a claim, death certificates, medical reports, or forensic autopsy documents must be submitted. Currently, authorities are awaiting documentation; if death resulted from an accident or homicide, the insurance company is prepared to pay.

When asked if drowning would be classified as disease, the CPU clarified it is treated as an accident. The board stated they will review any additional evidence if relatives provide it, and if a re-autopsy proves the death was accidental or caused by foul play rather than disease, Hualun's family would be entitled to insurance protection. The CPU also confirmed that death caused by toxic gases or inhalation of harmful substances would be classified as an accident, not disease, and urged relatives to submit any supporting documents for investigation.

Senator Accuses Rival of Defending Blue-Shirt Party Allies

Senator Nanthana Nantaviropass accused a legal advisor of defending "blue-shirt" senators, claiming the June 2024 national senator election showed clear abnormalities including vote-buying and systematic fraud with identical voting patterns

Senator Accuses Rival of Defending Blue-Shirt Party Allies
30 Jul Khaosod

Senator Nanthana Nantaviropass responded sharply to Supachai Jai Samutr, legal advisor for the Phum Jai Thai party, who threatened to lodge a complaint with the election commission over allegations that a gathering of 300 People's Senators candidates at Muang Thong Thani constituted electoral manipulation. Nanthana challenged Supachai on why he would defend the blue-shirt senators if he had no ties to them, suggesting his intervention revealed a deeper connection. She maintained that the June 27, 2024 national senator election exhibited clear abnormalities, with vote blocks arriving in chunks of 70–80 votes alongside documented evidence of vote buying, vehicle convoys, uniform clothing, and the circulation of black folders—all visible to the public.

Nanthana described efforts to paint her side as unethical while claiming equal wrongdoing as "wagging a dog's tail," stating the public could plainly see how evident the electoral fixing was. She referenced CCTV analysis showing that 60–70 candidates out of 150 voted for the same 10 sequential candidates in identical order across ballot boxes 1–10, an occurrence with odds of one in billions but consistent with systematic electoral fraud.

Concerning the 300-candidate gathering at Muang Thong Thani, Nanthana clarified it was an open event monitored by media and the election commission. Candidates organized through the Senate67 website run by the iLaw group to present themselves and constitutional reform ideas. She stressed that candidates funded their own registration fees (2,500 baht), shared meeting room rentals, and purchased their own clothing—not resources provided by any patron—contradicting accusations of external backing.

On the appointment of senate candidate assistants, Nanthana denied her side had hired former candidates into such roles but called for investigation of groups that did hire former candidates and then saw salaries returned to certain individuals—a pattern she identified as another form of vote-buying and electoral fraud. She expressed no concern about legal action, stating she had engaged in no fraud and welcomed judicial review through the Supreme Court's election division.

Lawyer Defends Record, Denies Prison Time and Name Change

Lawyer Defends Record, Denies Prison Time and Name Change
30 Jul Khaosod

On July 30, 2025, reports emerged of an attorney in northeast Thailand allegedly serving a 16-year prison sentence for drug offenses before changing his name to clear his record and apply for bar admission, sparking public controversy.

Nayaphattrapong Suphaksin, known as Lawyer An from Buriram, responded through his personal Facebook account, stating that his current name has never been officially changed. He explained that at birth he was registered as Kriang Gai Pornthaisong, but his father changed it to Pattrapong Pornthaisong while he was still an infant, and later changed the surname to Suphaksin when he was nine years old—a name he has used continuously without alteration.

"I have never been imprisoned or faced serious criminal charges," Lawyer An stated firmly. "I have been practicing law for over 10 years without ever defrauding the state or engaging in any illegal conduct. If you have evidence, present it. I am 40 years old now—if I had served 16 years in prison, the timeline simply does not align."

Lawyer An challenged his detractors to provide proof, declaring, "Come at me with your evidence. I have four major tasks ahead: first, to expose the complete financial network involving a senator, not just a fragment; second, to expose financial flows involving Amnat Charoen province; third, to reveal how an official transferred assets to family members to evade political disqualification; and fourth, to expose a school administrator who unlawfully benefited from state land."

He concluded defiantly: "Find evidence of such wrongdoing against me. Come on, bring it on—whatever you have."

Justice sector reports clarified that the attorney reported to have served 16 years for drug trafficking is not Pattrapong, though the other lawyer shares his surname. The imprisoned attorney served between 1999 and 2015 at Phol Provincial Prison. Given that Pattrapong is currently 40 and has been practicing law for over 10 years, he would have been in secondary school or university during that imprisonment period. The other attorney is reportedly decades older, and reports do not identify Pattrapong as the subject of the allegations.

A subdistrict council chairman in Nakhon Phanom Province was arrested with 400,000 methamphetamine tablets hidden in fertilizer sacks near the Mekong River border in a major international smuggling operation.

Subdistrict Council Chief Arrested in Major Methamphetamine Smuggling Ring
30 Jul Khaosod

On July 30, 2025, at the Ranger Company 2102 base in Tha Uthen District, Nakhon Phanom Province, district officials and military rangers announced the arrest of a key international methamphetamine trafficking network member, identified as Mr. A, age 49, who holds the position of SAO council chairman. Officers confiscated 400,000 methamphetamine tablets concealed in two fertilizer sacks.

The arrest followed an investigation that revealed the suspect's long-standing involvement in drug trafficking. He had been coordinating the delivery of methamphetamine to the banks of the Mekong River along the Nakhon Phanom border, where it was held pending transport into Thailand's interior. During a stakeout operation, authorities spotted the suspect walking down to the riverbank to collect sacks of methamphetamine that the smuggling network had left at the border for temporary storage before moving them to a cattle pen in Nong Tao Subdistrict.

When officers moved in for arrest, the suspect attempted to flee and initially denied involvement. However, evidence proved conclusive, and he was taken into custody for interrogation. He has made a preliminary confession to being hired for the operation but has not yet provided full details. Authorities plan to expand the investigation, pursue connected network members, and proceed with legal action. Records indicate this is a major trafficking operation, with the suspect receiving substantial payments in the hundreds of thousands of baht for each delivery of hundreds of thousands of tablets.

Background checks revealed the suspect's long history of drug involvement. After leaving his position as village headman, he registered as an SAO member in two terms and rose to council chairman. His wife was previously imprisoned on drug charges related to methamphetamine possession from several years ago.

Thailand Tourism Board Launches Myth Night Season Festival

Thailand's Tourism Authority launched "Myth Night Season," a festival blending local folklore with contemporary culture to attract younger travelers and boost the night economy at venues like Lido Connect Siam.

Thailand Tourism Board Launches Myth Night Season Festival
30 Jul Khaosod

The Tourism Authority of Thailand's domestic market division is driving the creative economy and supporting the Night Economy policy to appeal to younger travelers. The agency has launched the "Myth Night Season" festival, tapping into the night tourism trend while showcasing deep cultural heritage and experiential travel. The initiative aims to distribute tourism revenue and extend visitor stays.

Achaiyai Chattcharoemkij, deputy governor of the Tourism Authority's domestic market division, stated that Thailand possesses rich cultural assets and diverse local legends but lacks systematic mechanisms to link them to valuable tourism products. The new festival transforms these cultural resources into innovative travel experiences that generate economic and social value, guiding visitors through the parallel worlds of Thai myth, belief, and folklore blended with contemporary culture, cuisine, and pop culture. The effort involves collaboration between artists, creators, communities, and partners to develop destinations as unique experiential destinations for relaxation and self-discovery.

The festival presents the folklore of Kudeejeen community under the concept "Kudeejeen Night: Alley of Connected Realms, Multi-Legend Haunting," featuring three experience zones: Zone 1 (Understanding) offers an interactive exhibition decoding the beliefs of three religions and four faith traditions; Zone 2 (Communicate) provides a space where celebrities like "Jack the Ghost" and "Everest" share supernatural experiences; and Zone 3 (Experience) features food, drinks, workshops, and activities inspired by local stories. Influencers will also document experiences for target audiences. The Tourism Authority invites visitors to experience creative horror and support Thai soft power through local legends at Lido Connect Siam from July 31 to August 1, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Thai AirAsia Commits to Sustainable Community Tourism Across Asia

Thai AirAsia partners with the Tourism Authority of Thailand to develop sustainable community tourism in Songkhla Province, connecting visitors with local traditions while supporting economic growth and environmental conservation in rural a

Thai AirAsia Commits to Sustainable Community Tourism Across Asia
30 Jul Khaosod

In today's world, travel happens more easily than ever, with a single aircraft carrying people across countries and cultures, opening doors to new experiences within just hours. But for Thai AirAsia, travel means far more than transporting passengers to their destination—it's about connecting people with opportunity, cities with their future, and local communities with the wider world.

Over two decades, Thai AirAsia has served as a bridge linking hundreds of millions of people across Asia, guided by the belief that everyone deserves equal access to travel. Yet as the world has come to prioritize sustainable development, Thai AirAsia has expanded its role beyond being an airline to become part of creating value for the society, environment, and economy of every community its flights reach through the Journey D program. The airline believes that travel doesn't just transform those who travel—it also transforms the small communities at their destinations.

Driven by this conviction, Thai AirAsia has joined the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) in the Village to the World Season 5 initiative—honoring Queen Sirikit's royal dedication to conserving natural resources while improving community quality of life through sustainable tourism that balances conservation with development. This step reinforces the airline's long-held principle that "good travel should benefit everyone"—travelers, communities, and nature alike.

Thai AirAsia is bringing this vision to life by partnering with Khlong Hoi Khong Farm, an ecotourism social enterprise, and Hat Khao Subdistrict communities in Songkhla Province to develop tourism routes grounded in local identity, culture, and generations of inherited wisdom. The goal is to help visitors discover the true value of these communities and the charm of this two-sea region, reflected in simple lifestyles and a deep connection to nature—from traditional fishing practices and egg-incubation wisdom to tea-roasting methods, 200-year-old wooden homes, and traditional Thai massage along Songkhla Lake.

A key destination is Khlong Hoi Khong Farm, which applies the philosophy of sufficiency economy to balanced agriculture, livestock, and fishing. It opens its doors to tourists to show that sustainability is not distant—it begins with using resources wisely and living in harmony with nature.

In an era when sustainability and ESG are at the heart of business, Thai AirAsia believes real results require tangible outcomes. Its collaboration to develop community tourism in Songkhla is not simply about increasing visitor numbers—it's about building a 'tourism ecosystem' where communities grow and become self-sustaining.

What Thai AirAsia shares goes beyond its travel network—it's the 'heart of service.' It starts with a first smile, warm welcome, and care, extending to lasting impressions long after the journey ends. This approach applies to community tourism because whether the destination is an airport, hotel, or small village by a lake, what people remember best is not the place but the 'feeling they got from the people.' Thai AirAsia is helping communities take flight by sharing knowledge in designing travel experiences and crafting and telling their stories well.

15 Provinces on Alert for Landslides, Flash Floods

Thailand's Geological Disaster Operations Center warns 15 provinces of landslide and flash flood risks through August 1 due to heavy monsoon rains exceeding 150mm daily across the North, Northeast, Central, East and South regions.

15 Provinces on Alert for Landslides, Flash Floods
30 Jul Khaosod

On July 30, the Geological Disaster Operations Center of the Department of Mineral Resources under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment issued a warning for 1-3 days of heavy rain and heightened risk of landslides and flash flooding across 15 provinces: Tak, Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Chiang Rai, Nan, Phayao, Phrae, Uttaradit, Phetchabun, Kanchanaburi, Chanthaburi, Trat, Ranong, and Phangnga. Monitoring will remain in effect from July 30 through August 1, 2025.

High-risk areas in the North include multiple districts in Tak, Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, and Chiang Rai, as well as districts in Nan, Phayao, Phrae, Uttaradit, and Phetchabun. In the Central region, Kanchanaburi faces risks in several districts. The Eastern region includes vulnerable areas in Chanthaburi and Trat. Southern provinces Ranong and Phangnga are also on alert.

The warning is due to a monsoon trough affecting the North and Northeast, combined with strong southwest monsoon winds, producing continuous heavy rainfall exceeding 150 millimeters in 24 hours across affected areas. Cumulative rainfall over several days and early signs of flash flooding in some locations increase the risk of landslides. Network volunteers and the public are urged to monitor conditions continuously, report any incidents immediately, and follow established emergency response protocols.

Ex-Official Flags Weaknesses in Election Commission Ruling

A former Election Commission member has identified seven critical weaknesses in the agency's ruling that allowed two senators to register in a broad business category instead of their specific trades, potentially constituting criminal misco

Ex-Official Flags Weaknesses in Election Commission Ruling
30 Jul Khaosod

Somchai Srisutthiyakorn, a former Election Commission member, dissected weaknesses in the Commission's qualification ruling on July 30, 2025, posted on Facebook. He argued that if the Commission made an error—whether through negligence or intent to help the candidates—it could constitute criminal misconduct by state officials acting improperly.

The case centers on whether senators Sompan Phrasak (noodle vendor) and Daeng Kongma (pork butcher) registered in the correct business category. They registered in Group 10 (other enterprises outside medium and small businesses) rather than their trade-specific categories. The Election Commission affirmed both candidates met qualifications after finding sufficient evidence.

Somchai identified seven critical weaknesses in the ruling:

1. The Commission based its decision solely on self-declaration, witness signatures, and district-level checks, with no government agency disputing qualifications.

2. Further investigation focused narrowly on whether the candidates had engaged in their trades for over 10 years, treating a 10-year record as proof of qualification.

3. The Commission failed to define Group 10 (other enterprises) under the law governing medium and small enterprises.

4. Proper interpretation of Group 10 requires referencing the 2002 Ministerial Regulation on medium and small enterprise definitions: service businesses like noodle shops classified as small (S) have up to 50 workers and assets not exceeding 50 million baht; medium (M) have 51-200 workers and 50-200 million baht in assets. Retail businesses like butcher stalls classified as small (S) have up to 15 workers and assets not exceeding 30 million baht; medium (M) have 16-30 workers and 30-60 million baht in assets.

5. Group 10 should only include enterprises that are neither small (S) nor medium (M)—meaning noodle vendors with over 200 employees and 200+ million in assets, or butchers with over 30 employees and 60+ million in assets.

6. If the Commission's ruling was erroneous due to carelessness, it constitutes negligent misconduct harming the state. If intentional aid to candidates was involved, it is criminal misconduct by state officials failing their duties.

Voucher Economy Reshapes Thailand's Travel Industry
30 Jul Khaosod

Macalister reports that the "Voucher Economy" is emerging as a critical strategy for Thailand's tourism sector in 2025, enabling businesses to manage revenue and drive sales without impacting standard pricing. E-voucher accommodation purchases on the platform have surged 50%, reflecting tourists' shift toward advance planning and preference for weekday and low-season travel.

Neeranuch Traichakvanit, managing director of Macalister Thailand, stated that while Thailand's tourism industry continues to grow, operators face mounting pressure to drive sales as consumers increasingly seek value and lower prices. E-vouchers have evolved beyond simple promotional tools to become sophisticated revenue management instruments, allowing businesses to optimize sales, manage demand, and sustain growth without discounting regular prices.

"Many previously viewed vouchers as mere discounts, but for operators they are demand management tools that drive sales without requiring standard price reductions," she explained. Operators now strategically deploy vouchers across different periods—boosting low-season sales, offering time-limited packages, and setting redemption conditions to increase utilization rates while preserving brand pricing integrity.

Beyond pricing, vouchers help operators forecast revenue and plan marketing and cost management more efficiently, particularly valuable for service businesses with high fixed costs like hotels, restaurants, and attractions. Consumer behavior has shifted markedly: travelers now proactively purchase vouchers for accommodations, dining, spas, and activities to budget and book at optimal times, rather than waiting for seasonal promotions.

Macalister's 2025 sales data shows accommodation voucher purchases grew 50% year-over-year, with Pattaya leading in popularity. Surveys reveal tourists increasingly favor weekday and low-season travel, indicating vouchers have become integral to travel planning rather than mere discount-seeking tools.

Thai Embassy Investigates YouTuber Hlun Solo's Death in Georgia
30 Jul Khaosod

BANGKOK — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow has expressed condolences to the family of Thai travel YouTuber Boworntat Pengsuk, known as "Hlun Solo," while Thai embassy officials have travelled to Georgia to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

Speaking at Government House on Thursday morning, Sihasak said the Foreign Ministry and the Thai Embassy in Ankara, Türkiye, which oversees consular affairs in Georgia, had dispatched officials to Tbilisi to investigate the case.

Thailand will await the completion of the Georgian investigation and a report from the Thai embassy team before reaching conclusions about the cause of death, Sihasak said.

"I would like to express my condolences to the family of the deceased. This is an unexpected incident, as Hlun had travelled to many countries," Sihasak said.

Regarding repatriation of Hlun's body, Sihasak said the process would begin once the investigation is complete, with arrangements depending on the family's wishes.

Hlun had been out of contact for more than two weeks before his body was found inside a hotel. Georgian authorities and the Thai embassy took action as soon as they learned of his disappearance, Sihasak said.

Hlun had been travelling in Georgia and continued filming content during his trip. Thai officials are monitoring the case but Georgian authorities will lead the investigation and report their findings first.

No conclusions have been reached regarding the cause of death. Reports have suggested either an attack or suicide, but Sihasak said authorities must complete their investigation first.

Responding to reports from Georgian media claiming the death was a suicide, Sihasak declined to draw conclusions at this stage, saying the findings would be shared with family members once authorities complete their work.

Asked whether Thailand should issue new travel warnings following several foreign tourist deaths in Georgia, Sihasak said the Foreign Ministry regularly provides safety information about dangerous or conflict-affected areas. He advised travellers to contact the Foreign Ministry for current information and coordinate with the relevant Thai embassy if needed.
