Authorities in Si Sa Ket have launched an operation to dismantle a major drug trafficking network that hid methamphetamine pills by burying them in remote rice field huts and along water reservoirs to avoid police detection, ultimately seizing 267,600 pills.

On July 27, 2025, at the Si Sa Ket provincial hall, Governor Anurat Thampratchamjit and Pol. Lt. Gen. Chayakorn Tetsabumrung, an adviser to the national police office, announced the arrest alongside government officials, police, military, and security agencies. The operation followed investigation by the Si Sa Ket provincial drug suppression unit working with Task Force 238 Litakhorn Lamduang, comprising police, military, local officials, prison staff, and officers from Uthumphonpisai Police Station, who tracked the network's activities and arrested three suspects: Samukkr, 38; Cherdsakdi, 33; and Kritima, 22, all from Khayung Subdistrict, Uthumphonpisai District, along with 267,600 methamphetamine pills.

Investigation revealed the network used rice fields in Khayung Subdistrict, Uthumphonpisai District as storage sites before gradually delivering drugs to customers. Officers surrounded and searched the area, finding 219,600 pills carefully buried and camouflaged in soil. A follow-up operation on a connected network yielded an additional 48,000 pills, bringing the total to 267,600.

The Si Sa Ket governor urged the public to report any individuals or groups involved in drug use, dealing, or operating illicit venues. Tips can be reported 24 hours daily via the drug hotline 1599, police hotline 191, the Office of the Narcotics Control Board hotline 1386, and the Si Sa Ket Dharma Center hotline 1567. An ex-husband has shot and killed his ex-wife, a prominent business owner in Lampang province, at their shared residence. The incident is believed to stem from a property dispute.

On July 27, Pol. Lt. Wichian Jaisan Klang, an investigator at Muang Lampang Police Station, responded to a report of a shooting inside a house in Wieng Nuea subdistrict, Muang district, Lampang province. He coordinated with Pol. Col. Komsarn Barungyot, commander of Muang Lampang Police Station, and Pol. Lt. Thani Chantantakul, deputy commander, along with forensic teams, five forensic doctors from Lampang Hospital, and rescue workers to investigate the scene.

At the two-story concrete house, officers found the body of Ms. Thanyapat, 54, a business owner in Lampang province, in front of the kitchen area. Initial investigation revealed that the suspect is Chainorin, 61, the ex-husband. Although the couple had divorced, they continued to live in the same house. Neighbors reported hearing them arguing loudly before gunshots rang out, prompting them to alert police.

When officers arrived, the woman was already dead. Several spent bullet casings were found on the street in front of the house, believed to have been discarded by the suspect after the shooting. According to people close to the family, the couple had agreed to divide assets following their divorce, but the man did not receive the agreed-upon sum, which led to disputes. This is believed to be the trigger for the incident. Police are gathering evidence and witness statements to determine the exact cause and proceed with legal action.

The Dindaeng District Office explained the collapse of a four-story building during demolition work for the Orange Line electric train project, and is accelerating safety inspections and relief efforts for affected residents. On July 27, authorities from the Dindaeng District Office and relevant agencies inspected the collapsed structure in Pracha Songkhro Soi 28, Dindaeng District, Bangkok, which was being demolished as part of the Bangkok Mass Transit System's Orange Line construction project. Officials are conducting urgent safety assessments and preparing assistance plans for affected residents, while the cause and damage assessment remain under investigation. Residents captured video footage showing the four-story building collapsing during demolition work, sending dust and concrete debris across the surrounding area and forcing nearby residents to flee in fear. After the incident, officials from the Dindaeng District Office's Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Bureau and the Bangkok Mass Transit System immediately inspected the area and surveyed the collapsed structure to assess safety risks to nearby residents. Ms. Chutamad, a nearby resident affected by the collapse, revealed that she had received no prior notice of the demolition work but observed workers setting up metal sheet barriers and moving heavy machinery into the area starting the previous day. Demolition began at 8:00 a.m., and during the work she felt strong vibrations and grew concerned for safety, prompting neighbors to evacuate elderly residents and patients to the community sports field in advance. The building collapsed in the afternoon, causing partial damage to her home, and she remains worried about residential safety and is calling on officials to accelerate inspections and provide assistance. Panisorat Nethara, the Dindaeng District Chief, stated that the collapsed building was an old structure being demolished for the Orange Line project in an area containing foundation pilings. Initial surveys found no injuries or deaths. The district office has mobilized personnel from engineering, public utilities, and disaster mitigation departments in coordination with the Bangkok Mass Transit System to assess structural integrity and ensure no further collapse risk. Utility officials are also investigating for damage to infrastructure that could endanger nearby residents. If evacuation becomes necessary, the transit authority will prepare relief and assistance plans with support from the district office for affected residents. The Bangkok Mass Transit System reported that the collapse site is an area being demolished to prepare foundation pilings for the Orange Line between Bang Khun Thian and Minburi.

27 Jul Khaosod

Parliament Speaker Sopon Saramyuth presided over a seminar on July 27, 2026, at parliament to promote national awareness and loyalty to the monarchy, with Buddhist prayers and merit-making offerings for the King's health and prosperity. The event, titled "The Monarchy Institution and Thai Society," was held to demonstrate gratitude and reverence for the monarch, emphasizing that the monarchy institution is irreplaceable and invaluable to the nation. Sopon recalled a childhood experience his grandmother shared about traveling over 15 kilometers by cart to greet the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit in Lamphlayamaj District, Buriram Province, illustrating the loyalty of Thai citizens willing to travel far to pay respects to the royal family. In 2015, during the King's birthday observance on December 5, Sopon participated in a flower offering ceremony in Lamphlayamaj District alongside residents dressed in formal attire, which he described as a moving reflection of public devotion to the monarchy. He established a "Good Deeds Club for the Father of the Nation" to promote the philosophy of sufficiency economy and jointly planted 100,000 trees with local government without using state budget, dedicating the effort as merit-making for the King. The reforested area in Lamphlayamaj District now serves as an important natural resource conservation zone and a tribute to the monarchy, aligning with the late King's conservation legacy and engaging communities in sustainable forest preservation. Sopon pledged to continue promoting civic awareness, particularly among youth, to honor the nation that ancestors protected and to follow the late King's footsteps in conserving and developing the country's natural resources for future generations. The event concluded with participants engaging in Buddhist meditation and prayer practices under the principles of charity, moral conduct, and mindfulness, with all merit dedicated to the King's health and longevity on the occasion of his birthday on July 28, 2026.

Thailand Taxonomy Aims to Green Agriculture Supply Chains

Thailand launched Phase 2 of its environmental taxonomy framework to accelerate green finance in agriculture, construction, and manufacturing, with over 70 stakeholders convening to develop implementation best practices for sustainable supp

Thailand Taxonomy Aims to Green Agriculture Supply Chains
27 Jul Khaosod

Germany's GIZ organization in Thailand, together with the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives and representatives from research institutions, government agencies, private sector, and international organizations—over 70 participants in total—convened for a workshop titled "Implementing Thailand Taxonomy in the Agricultural Sector" at Skyview Hotel Bangkok.

The meeting aimed to develop best practices for Thailand's agriculture and finance sectors, and to advance implementation of the Thailand Taxonomy framework, an environmental classification standard enabling both public and private sectors to align on criteria for promoting green finance. The framework covers activities that do not cause significant negative environmental and social impacts, while supporting greenhouse gas reduction and climate change adaptation.

Phase 1 of Thailand Taxonomy covered energy and transport sectors as the highest emitters. Phase 2 expanded to include agriculture, construction, real estate, manufacturing, and waste management, bringing total coverage to over 95% of the country's emissions. Thailand Taxonomy serves as a key tool to help businesses and financial institutions transition to a low-carbon, sustainable economy.

Piyavarn Khemtongpradit, Deputy Director of Financial Institution Strategy at the Bank of Thailand, opened the session by noting that while the launch of Thailand Taxonomy Phase 2 last year was a significant milestone, the real challenge lies in practical implementation. "The financial sector has a crucial role in supporting agriculture's transition," she said, adding that "Thailand Taxonomy will be an important tool enabling financial institutions to design financial products, assess risk, and transparently support green activities."

Sangwal Sapma, Project Manager and Head of Member Relations and Communications at the Sustainable Rice Platform (a multi-stakeholder global initiative focused on sustainable food production), discussed practical application of taxonomy standards. "SRP standards and Thailand's Taxonomy policy for agriculture already align well. SRP helps farmers implement and measure sustainable practices, while Taxonomy policy opens access to finance through existing structures. Rather than creating new systems, we should build on what already exists, like the SRP standard," she explained.

Teacher Shot Dead by Ex-Girlfriend; Grieving Parents Prepare to Bring Body Home
27 Jul Khaosod

A 34-year-old teacher named Mr. A was shot in the head and killed inside his bedroom in Muang district, Khon Kaen province, at approximately 1:30 a.m. on July 27, 2569. The suspect is Ms. Song, 33, his ex-girlfriend, who fled by car to Nong Bua Lamphu province before her father helped her surrender to police at Muang Nong Bua Lamphu station. She initially denied responsibility, claiming they had struggled over the gun before it discharged and struck the victim fatally.

On the afternoon of July 27 at Ban Pet police station in Khon Kaen, the victim's parents and family arrived from Kamphaeng Phet province to meet with investigators, coordinate the case, and arrange to take their son's body home for religious ceremonies. When they encountered people present at the scene, the parents broke down emotionally, embracing each other and crying as relatives and officers comforted them.

The victim's mother, Mrs. A, recalled that her son had aspired to be a teacher and had recently passed his certification exam. She said their last conversation before his death was brief, with him mentioning he needed rest before morning activities. Regarding his relationship with the suspect, her son had described it as a friendship. The woman had previously loaned him a car, and after he purchased a home, they lived separately but remained in contact. Her son had told her he was not interested in a serious relationship and wanted to remain single for the time being. The family had only recently met the woman during a merit-making ceremony for the house in March.

The victim's uncle expressed that his nephew was hardworking and dutiful, always helping and caring for his parents. He and the family immediately traveled to Khon Kaen upon hearing the news. The uncle was deeply grieved, saying the victim's parents cried from the moment they left home until arriving in Khon Kaen. He described the suspect's actions as savage and brutal, questioning why she would kill his nephew without asking or talking things through. He called for the case to be pursued to its fullest extent, describing the victim as a pillar of the family who had always taken good care of his parents.

Chinese Embassy Demands Thailand Probe Excessive Force at Fan Event

A Chinese fan was forcibly restrained by security staff at a Bangkok fan event on July 25 after a dispute over line-cutting, sparking complaints of excessive force that prompted the Chinese Embassy to demand a Thai investigation.

Chinese Embassy Demands Thailand Probe Excessive Force at Fan Event
27 Jul Khaosod

An international dispute has erupted following a clash between Thai event staff and a Chinese fan at the JuniorMark gathering during the 2026 International Novel Festival at Siam Square on July 25. The incident drew heavy criticism and spread across Chinese social media, with online users contending that staff overreacted. Thai witnesses claimed the Chinese fan cut in line by removing reserved merchandise from Thai fans and replacing it with her own, prompting staff to intervene and eventually ask her to leave. When she refused and a physical struggle ensued, the fan kicked a female staff member, leading security to apply a chokehold and forcibly restrain her on the ground.

The Chinese fan countered that she had arrived at 6:00 a.m. and placed her umbrella to reserve her spot in the usual manner, denying she had cut in line and providing photographic evidence. She alleged that staff never examined her proof but instead used excessive force, confiscated her phone, and applied pressure to her neck. She claimed her kick was defensive before being thrown to the ground, damaging her clothes and accessories, with her official merchandise bags seized.

On July 27, the Chinese Embassy in Thailand issued a statement regarding the incident, noting it had received a complaint from the Chinese citizen about excessive use of force by security personnel. The embassy stated that the event organizer had acknowledged "using excessive force beyond what the situation warranted" and called on relevant Thai authorities to expedite fact-finding and resolve the matter promptly. The embassy committed to providing necessary assistance to the citizen and protecting her lawful rights and interests.

On July 26, GMMTV released a clarification acknowledging that security personnel used excessive force in certain moments and expressing regret for the incident and its impact on those involved. The company noted that the security officer in question was a contracted external worker, not a permanent employee, and has suspended his employment pending completion of the investigation. GMMTV denied reports that it had filed legal action against the individual involved, clarifying that no such lawsuit was filed. The company affirmed it has no policy of discrimination.

Central Pattana Celebrates Motherhood With 'Mom Moments' Campaign

Central Pattana's "Mom Moments" campaign celebrates motherhood through family experiences and special promotions across its shopping centers nationwide throughout August, with Miss World 2025 Opal Suchata as ambassador.

Central Pattana Celebrates Motherhood With 'Mom Moments' Campaign
27 Jul Khaosod

Central Pattana Public Company Limited, operator of Central shopping centers nationwide, has launched the 'Mom Moments: Proud Mom. Proud of My Mom.' campaign inspired by the late Queen Sirikit's famous statement, "I love being a mother most of all." The campaign celebrates the love, bonds, and pride between mothers and children by creating meaningful family experiences. Miss World 2025 Opal Suchata and her mother serve as campaign ambassadors, representing the new generation and encouraging families to create "Mom Moments" through special activities and promotions throughout August at Central shopping centers across the country.

Dr. Nathakitti Tangpoonsinthanakul, Executive Managing Director of Marketing at Central Pattana, explained that the late Queen's words reflect the essence of motherhood—love, sacrifice, and pride—values that remain meaningful to all families across generations. Modern consumers, particularly Gen Z and Millennials, prioritize quality time and shared memories over material gifts, viewing Mother's Day as an opportunity for families to spend time together rather than simply exchanging presents. The campaign is designed not merely as a promotional event but as an experience enabling families to create lasting, meaningful memories while making shopping centers a natural gathering place during important family moments.

Gen Z and Millennials are redefining the mother-child relationship from "parent-child" to "close friend" dynamic, characterized by shared lifestyles, interests, and time together. Research shows that over 70–75% of Gen Z view their parents as their "closest friends," and about 60% of Gen Z-mother pairs share common interests.
