Mother Seeks Justice After Nurse Daughter Killed in Pickup Crash
More than a year after a pickup truck struck and killed a female nurse on her way home from work in Buriram, her mother says the family has received no compensation, only a 300‑baht funeral offering and some vegetables from the driver. She says police told her the case is closed despite no settlement, and she is demanding justice and financial redress for funeral costs and her daughter’s debts.
Somkit said her daughter worked as a professional nurse and also did part‑time acting, sold life insurance, and held a managerial position. In July 2025, during border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia, her daughter called to urge her mother to move to Pathumthani for safety, but the mother chose to stay at an evacuation center instead. On August 8, 2025, they discussed downloading an insurance application; the daughter said she was on duty at the hospital and would install the app later that evening. After that call, they lost contact. Around 8:00 p.m., the hospital called to say the daughter had been in a serious collision, needed urgent surgery, and she remained hospitalized for six days before dying on August 15, 2025. The family brought her body back to their hometown in Lahansai District for funeral rites from August 16 to 22, 2025, incurring expenses of over 400,000 baht. During the funeral, the driver of the pickup arrived to pay respects, brought vegetables and placed 300 baht in an envelope for merit; Somkit used the money for merit‑making and offered the vegetables to the temple, but there was no serious discussion of compensation. She said she was shocked when, on the day of the cremation, the police officer handling the case called to tell her she could collect her daughter’s motorcycle, claiming the case was closed. Somkit questioned how the case could be considered finished when no settlement had been reached. She worries investigators may try to frame it as joint negligence, but the evidence shows the motorcycle was struck from behind by the pickup, with damage consistent with a rear impact. The matter has proceeded to court and been sent back to investigators for further action. The family is now seeking compensation within the criminal case, hoping to obtain justice and financial redress for their loss.
