Myanmar Army Bolsters Defenses Against Imminent Karenni Assault
Burma’s army is hastily strengthening defenses around Naypyidaw amid fears of an imminent Karenni Army offensive. Karenni forces have consolidated control of much of Karenni State and are blocking Burmese movements toward the Thai border in Mae Hong Son, raising the prospect of heavy fighting along the border by October 2026.
According to the source, Burmese forces have been moving troops and adjusting plans in Mae Hong Son province, worried that the Karenni Army will launch an offensive to capture Naypyidaw. Since the Karenni Army and allied PDF units have been able to approach the capital with relative ease, even destroying aircraft and the main airport there, the military junta has felt compelled to rush a new defensive posture. The Karenni Army has been steadily reinforcing positions around Loikaw, despite being hampered by Burmese reconnaissance drones and occasional airstrikes that target both military and civilian sites to prevent Karenni fighters from mingling with locals. In early October 2026 the Burmese Air Force unusually increased its attacks, while Karenni forces continued to block Burmese ground movements toward the Thai border in Mae Hong Son, forcing the junta to rely on air‑dropped supplies after losing several helicopters and planes to Karenni anti‑air fire. Although some Burma army outposts remain in larger Karenni towns such as Bokaloke, Phason, Dimoso and Fluso, they are confined to their bases because the Karenni Army maintains constant pressure and has intercepted many resupply flights, sometimes shooting down the aircraft and seizing the dropped cargo. Since the 1111 operation in November 2023, the Karenni Army and its PDF allies, together with groups like the KNU, Pa‑O militia and Arakan Army, have captured almost all of Karenni State, including Loikaw, Shado, Mossiw, Dimoso, Phason, Bokaloke and Mobye in Shan State. In 2026 the Burmese army briefly regained control of Loikaw and Mobye, but most surrounding areas remain under Karenni control.
