TAK — 17 August 2026, Fighting between Myanmar troops and the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) intensified along the Thai-Myanmar border on Monday, with Myanmar forces launching airstrikes and flying in supplies to support ground troops as stray gunfire again crossed into Thailand.

Clashes continued around Min La Pan and Pha Lu Noi villages in Myawaddy Township, Karen State, opposite Ban Huai Maha Wong and Ban Mae Kon Ken in Mae Sot district, Tak province. Fighting was also reported around the Ticha Lae base, opposite Ban Wale in Phop Phra district.

Myanmar troops continued shelling Karen positions with heavy weapons while the two sides also exchanged small-arms fire.

Fighting was particularly intense around Min La Pan, where Myanmar forces were attempting to advance and seize Karen positions.

Stray rounds from the clashes again crossed the border and struck homes in Ban Huai Maha Wong. No injuries were reported. The affected houses are in the same area that has previously been hit by rounds fired during fighting across the border.

Myanmar forces have also deployed aircraft to bomb Karen positions and used military aircraft to deliver food and other supplies to troops on the ground.

The aerial resupply operation was reportedly intended to reduce reliance on overland supply routes, amid concerns that Karen forces could ambush ground convoys.

NONTHABURI — 17 August 2026. Two people believed to be a husband and wife were found dead inside a house in Nonthaburi after a fire tore through the second floor late Sunday night, with authorities discovering petrol spread across parts of the property and a 20-litre fuel container near the stairs.

Police at Bang Si Mueang Police Station were alerted to the fire at about 00:30 on Monday at a two-storey detached house in a residential estate in Bang Si Mueang subdistrict, Mueang district. Firefighters from Bang Si Mueang and Bang Krang municipalities responded with three water trucks. When they arrived, flames were burning through the second floor of the roughly 80-square-wah property. Crews took more than 30 minutes to bring the fire under control.

After the flames were extinguished, officials found that the ground floor had not suffered significant fire damage, but petrol had apparently been poured across the floor. A 20-litre fuel container was found near the stairs leading to the second floor. The upstairs room was badly damaged by fire, with windows shattered by the heat. Inside a bedroom, rescuers found the bodies of two people lying on their backs on a bed. Both bodies were severely burned.

A charcoal stove that appeared to have been used was also found inside a bathroom, with only ashes remaining. Several cats were found dead throughout the house. Officials later said eight cats had died, while two surviving cats were taken to an animal hospital for treatment.

Tossaphon Fakpraphai, secretary to the mayor of Bang Si Mueang municipality, said firefighters encountered difficulties after entering the house because of the petrol. He said water sprayed during firefighting caused the fuel to flow with it, making it difficult for crews to reach the second floor.

A 24-year-old neighbour, identified only as Ping, said she initially heard what sounded like a heavy object falling before noticing smoke coming from the house. She said she first thought she had heard an explosion, but later realised the sound appeared to have been part of the ceiling near the parking area collapsing. Ping said neighbours smelled petrol and began calling firefighters, police and rescue services while attempting to contact the homeowners, but could not reach them.

She said security guards later arrived to assess the situation before a window near the burning room shattered due to the heat. According to Ping, the fire appeared to have started at around 23:50, initially producing only smoke before flames became visible. She said the two people living at the house were a married couple who lived there with several cats.

Officals initially determined that both victims died in the fire, but their identities could not immediately be confirmed because identification documents inside the home had been destroyed. Their bodies were sent to the Central Institute of Forensic Science for autopsies to determine the exact cause of death. Police said they would coordinate with the house owner to investigate the circumstances of the fire.

Hudson Pleased With Thailand's 10-Game Unbeaten Run

Hudson Pleased With Thailand's 10-Game Unbeaten Run
1d ago Khaosod

Anthony Hudson, head coach of the Thai national team, expressed satisfaction with guiding the squad through 10 consecutive matches without defeat and called for fans to give the players greater recognition.

At a press conference on August 17 at Rajamangala Stadium, the Asian Football Confederation held a briefing ahead of the second leg of the 2026 AFF Cup semi-final. Thailand will face Singapore on August 18 at Rajamangala Stadium at 20:00.

Hudson said: "Facing Singapore is a difficult match. They are a top-tier team with complex tactics. They perform well, have a good head coach, and play well given their form in the first leg. I am very proud of my players' commitment, but we will try to do better in every phase of the game. Today's training must develop and improve. We need focus now, and I think this match is still 0-0, and it is like a final—another game against a difficult opponent."

Regarding post-match events after the first leg with Singapore, Hudson acknowledged the emotional nature of football. "It was an emotional game, which is normal in football. I myself am someone with lingering passion, but I want to confirm that I respect Singapore, Gavin Lee, and their coaching staff and players who did an outstanding job. After the game ended, I went to discuss with Gavin Lee some situations during the match that made myself and my staff unhappy. For example, before the penalty incident, a player held the ball too long—14-15 seconds—when the rules clearly state the ball should be released. I asked Gavin Lee why Singapore, being such a good and strong team, would do that when they already had the quality to deal with Thailand. Although emotions lingered and others were involved, the incident is over. I still respect Gavin Lee and all Singapore's footballers. When I woke up the next morning and saw my social media feed, I felt embarrassed too, and I called my mother for some encouragement. But the first thing my mother asked was why I did that. I felt ashamed as well."

"I want myself and all players to think this match is still 0-0, which I will tell all players, because I don't want them to overlook things and think this game is easy. I want everyone to play as if the score is still 0-0 with the same intensity as the first match, so everyone wants to secure victory. Regarding team changes, I think I am lucky to have every player working hard from day one, and that gives me great confidence. Whether we change or not, I think we have the advantage that every player in the team has quality. We will look at freshness, and even with changes, I think our form will not drop even one percent."

"Regarding criticism directed at me throughout my work with Thailand, which remains undefeated in 10 matches, honestly it doesn't affect me much. But there is something that disappoints me and saddens me for the players. In every camp, I believe they deserve credit and should be mentioned and praised more positively because everyone works very hard and deserves recognition. My playing style over the past two to three camps saw different player groups, and this is another new group. Based on statistics, I feel we have done remarkably well and impressively to reach the semi-final. Our first game with Singapore showed we could not perform well enough—our calmness in possession and aggression in play are my responsibility to improve. This camp has six or seven new forwards, some under pressure, but once they get through, everyone should be relieved."

"Finally, facing Singapore: I must acknowledge that Singapore right now is strong and has developed significantly, and they have massive fan support backing them."

Digital Economy and Society Minister Chaiyachok Chidchob dismissed concerns over a no-confidence debate, saying the government treats parliamentary scrutiny as routine and will continue its work regardless.

Digital Minister Unfazed by Opposition No-Confidence Debate
1d ago Khaosod

Digital Economy and Society Minister Chaiyachok Chidchob stated on August 17 at Government House that he is not worried about being the target of a no-confidence debate by the opposition. Speaking as secretary-general of the Proud Thai Party, he said all ministries must be prepared for such scrutiny, and the government has been compiling points raised by opposition parties. He described these parliamentary challenges as routine and said the government would continue its work regardless.

When asked if he was unconcerned about being debated, Chidchok said he was not worried. On the comparison to being a "lightning rod" minister, he said such a position has both advantages and disadvantages. If his ministry produces good results and achievements, drawing special attention is not necessarily bad. When asked about potential political attacks linking him to his father Nevin Chidchob, chairman of Buriram United Football Club, Chidchob acknowledged that such connections are inevitable, saying he cannot escape political association given his role as secretary-general of the governing coalition party.

Police raided a visa consulting company in Bangkok's Sai Mai district on August 17, 2025, after a European embassy alerted authorities to fraudulent bank statements submitted by Thai nationals applying for visas. Officers seized forged bank stamps from multiple financial institutions, over 20 fake financial documents, and four desktop computers bearing counterfeit stamps and false records including salary letters and bank transaction statements.

Detectives compared seized documents against authentic bank records and identified suspicious patterns across five cases, including mismatched names between applicants and account holders, altered transaction histories, and the use of a single foreign credit card to fund multiple applicants. The company charged 40,000 baht per client for its services. The initial investigation has identified more than 400 victims with estimated losses exceeding 16 million baht.

The suspects face charges of conspiracy to forge and use fraudulent documents under Criminal Code sections 264, 265, and 268, and forging official seals under sections 251 and 252. Final charges will depend on further forensic examination and evidence review.

1d ago Khaosod

At 1:10 p.m. on August 17, 2025, at Government House, Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn said he is ready to provide a full account if the opposition tables a no-confidence debate against the government. "If the opposition discusses transport ministry matters, I am prepared to explain and address every point in detail," he said, adding he is not concerned about any questioning.

When asked whether he expects to be targeted by opposition scrutiny, Pipat noted that the Transport Ministry faces questions regardless of which government is in power. He said that as the prime minister has assigned him to oversee the ministry, he must be ready to clarify any issue, question, or concern raised by the opposition. Regarding previous controversies, he noted that in the previous government the opposition focused on energy policy—a portfolio he no longer holds—and on the land bridge project, which has been cancelled following a study by Deputy Prime Minister Ekniti Nitithanprasert and Finance Minister.

When asked about potential corruption in the Transport Ministry, Pipat said the ministry has only recently come under his supervision, with his previous tenure lasting less than two months and the current one approaching four months. "There should be nothing to worry about," he stated directly.

Regarding opposition plans to raise the Senate vote-buying scandal in debate, Pipat said the issue is still under investigation by the Election Commission, with two different committees reviewing it. No clear conclusions or public announcements have been made yet. He emphasized that he has no involvement in the scandal and that his name does not appear on the list of 229 people under investigation.

On August 17, 2569, at Khantharawichai Police Station in Sisaket Province, provincial governor Anurat Thammaprajumjit and Supachai Sakrinpanichkul, commander of Sisaket Provincial Police, announced the arrest of a suspect named Aswin and the seizure of a major methamphetamine shipment as part of the 90-day drug elimination operation. Officers arrested Aswin and recovered 4 million methamphetamine pills in 20 sacks, two pickup trucks, and three mobile phones.

The arrest followed an operation that began at 1:00 AM the same day, when officers from Sisaket Provincial Police, the 22nd Provincial Drug Suppression Unit in Ubon Ratchathani, and Khantharawichai Station tracked a drug trafficking group operating in Sisaket. They identified two pickup trucks—one serving as a scout vehicle and the other transporting drugs—and set up a surveillance and interception operation. Officers spotted a white Nissan pickup truck with Yasothon registration plates and signaled the driver, Aswin, to stop. Aswin abandoned the vehicle and fled but was apprehended near Suan Pa village in Ban Dung subdistrict, Khun Han district. Police then seized a bronze-grey Isuzu pickup truck with Sisaket plates that was operating as the scout vehicle.

A search of the Nissan pickup revealed 4 million methamphetamine pills distributed across 20 sacks—10 inside the cab and 10 in the truck bed—along with three mobile phones. The suspect and all evidence have been forwarded for further investigation. Authorities are analyzing the phones and other data to identify and pursue other members of the trafficking network.

Democrat Party Fields Decharat for Nonthaburi Governor Race

Democrat Party Fields Decharat for Nonthaburi Governor Race
1d ago Khaosod

The Democrat Party launched Decharat Sukkamuangoen as its candidate for the Nonthaburi Provincial Administrative Organization governor by-election on August 17, 2025, at the New Future Building, floor 7. Party leader Nattapong Rueangpanyawuthi announced the decision, explaining that the by-election became necessary following the death of former governor Thangsai Yenprasert, a respected administrator who had worked closely with the Democrat Party on local development. Nattapong said the party delayed the announcement to allow proper funeral arrangements and will submit the candidate for registration on August 20, with voting on September 20.

When asked why Decharat was chosen, Nattapong stated that the candidate possesses widely recognized qualifications both within and outside the party, and that the Democrat Party maintains an open selection process rather than locking in pre-determined candidates. He noted that the accelerated timeline was necessary due to the unexpected circumstances, and that Decharat is a native of Nonthaburi who understands local issues, with support from party members of parliament and provincial administrators in the province. Nattapong emphasized that Democrat Party strategy relies on presenting strong policies that address residents' needs, and that multiple campaign forums will be held between now and September 20 to present the party's platform.

When asked about confidence in winning, Nattapong expressed strong conviction that this is an opportunity to develop Nonthaburi city, building on previous achievements with a multi-billion-baht annual budget. He stressed that all elections ultimately rest on voters' decisions.

Decharat stated that running for governor is the most exciting opportunity since entering politics with the Democrat Party. He cited two reasons for his candidacy: since the 2023 and 2025 elections, he has drafted campaign policies but has not had the chance to implement them. He views this by-election as an opportunity to bring his twenty prepared policies into practice for Nonthaburi residents to decide upon.

1d ago Khaosod

The Thai Sports Association for Persons with Disabilities is fielding a competitive squad targeting no fewer than 17 gold medals, with renowned wheelchair racers Pongsakorn Bpaiyao and Athiwat Phaengnua carrying world records into the hunt for championship titles.

Thailand's para-sports delegation will compete at the 5th Asian Para Games from October 18-24 in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The effort is coordinated by the Sports Authority of Thailand in partnership with the Thai Paralympic Committee and four sports associations: the Thai Sports Association for Persons with Disabilities, the Thai Sports Association for the Blind, the Thai Sports Association for Persons with Cerebral Palsy, and the Thai Sports Association for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities. The athletes have been in continuous preparation since the 13th ASEAN Para Games in Nakhon Ratchasima in January, with a combined team goal of 24 gold medals.

Maitree Kongruang, president of the Thai Sports Association for Persons with Disabilities, disclosed that his organization is preparing athletes across 15 disciplines, most training at the National Para Sports Training Centre in Nakhon Ratchasima and Suphan Buri, with taekwondo based in Bangkok, cycling in Chiang Mai, badminton at the Thai-Thailand Club in Nonthaburi, and table tennis at Bangkok Thonburi University.

"All athletes are fully committed to their training. They have been in continuous preparation since the ASEAN Para Games, taking only one month's rest in February before resuming extended training until now. We are grateful to the Sports Authority of Thailand for their full support, which has made our athletes stronger," he said.

The Thai Sports Association for Persons with Disabilities represents the highest hopes for Thailand's para team, with a 17-gold-medal target led by world-class athletes Pongsakorn Bpaiyao and Athiwat Phaengnua, wheelchair racers who recently broke world records and won the international para-athletics championship in Switzerland in May, expected to deliver at least 6 golds. Additional medal prospects include wheelchair fencer Saiyasuneeyah Chana, expected to bring 3-4 golds; track and field athletes Sasirawanan Inthochot and Plathip Khamtha, targeting 3 golds; badminton players Nathapong Meechai (world no. 1) and Mongkhol Boonson, with potential for 2 golds; shooters Anusorn Chaichamnuay and Atidej Intnon, expected to secure over 2 golds; and table tennis, hoping for 5 golds.

"Our athletes have set a target of no fewer than 17 gold medals. Based on their continuous training, we are confident they will meet that goal. Our main competitors are China, South Korea, Japan, and several Middle Eastern nations that have improved their athlete preparation," Maitree concluded.
