Police in Sisaket are investigating a former parliamentary candidate accused of extorting 2.35 million baht under the false promise of securing government jobs. On August 21, a victim filed a complaint with Uthumphonpisai Police Station in Sisaket, alleging that a former political party parliamentary candidate promised to help place five family members into local administrative organization positions. The victim paid over 2.35 million baht but the promised placements never occurred. Lieutenant Colonel Nilakarn Porsak, commander of Uthumphonpisai Police Station, disclosed that investigators are currently collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses to establish clear facts, with work expected to conclude next week. If evidence is sufficiently clear, investigators will issue a summons for the suspect to acknowledge charges and enter formal legal investigation procedures. Subject to sufficient grounds and legal conditions, the police will petition the court for an arrest warrant. On August 21, Deputy Prime Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn and Transport Minister Assistant Siripong Angsukulkiarti inaugurated a trial service of Motorway M6, the Bang Pa-in to Nakhon Ratchasima route, opening an additional 110-kilometre section from Bang Pa-in to Pak Chong at Bang Pa-in toll plaza in Ayutthaya province. The route is free to use every Friday from noon until Sunday at midnight, offering residents and travellers from Bangkok and surrounding areas a new option to reach Nakhon Ratchasima and the Northeast region.

The newly opened section includes five toll booths for entry and exit: Bang Pa-in, Hin Kong, Kaeng Khoi, Mueang Lak, and Pak Chong. It connects seamlessly with the existing trial M6 service running from Pak Chong to the Nakhon Ratchasima bypass, providing continuous and convenient access to the Northeast. The route is expected to reduce traffic on the traditional Phahon Yothin and Mittraphap routes by 30 to 40 per cent, especially during weekends and holidays.

Deputy Prime Minister Pipat stated that opening this section represents a significant step in developing the country's transport network and reflects the government's policy of making ready infrastructure available to the public promptly. The complete 196-kilometre M6 route will serve as a strategic alternative to the Northeast, complementing existing roads while distributing traffic flow, reducing congestion, shortening travel times, and lowering transportation costs. He also instructed authorities to maintain high safety standards, particularly in scenic areas such as Lam Ta Khong, and urged the public to use the route responsibly and follow traffic regulations strictly.

Highway Department Director Piyapong Jiwatanakulpaisan said the department has prepared all aspects of the route, including traffic management, personnel, and emergency assistance systems, in coordination with Highway Police, Provincial Police, rescue units, and local agencies to facilitate traveller safety throughout the trial period.

On August 21, 2025, the Pollution Control Department under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment released the findings of its 12th sediment quality monitoring survey in the Kok River, its tributaries, the Sai River, the Ruak River, and the Mekong River. Samples were collected between July 7-10, 2025, to track unusual turbidity in the Kok River in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai provinces. Testing was conducted at 21 locations across all rivers.

Kok River: Six locations exceeded safe sediment quality standards (10 mg/kg maximum) for terrestrial wildlife. The worst case was site KK01 at the Thai-Myanmar border with 23 mg/kg mercury. Site KK05 at the Mae Yao-Doi Hang Friendship Bridge recorded 11 mg/kg mercury and 0.21 mg/kg mercury, exceeding the 0.2 mg/kg safety standard. Other sites (KK07, KK10, KK11, KK12) ranged from 13 to 16 mg/kg. One location, KK09 near the Chiang Rai King's Memorial Bridge, reached severely hazardous levels with 45 mg/kg mercury, plus elevated nickel (26 mg/kg, standard 23), lead (46 mg/kg, standard 36), and chromium (66 mg/kg, standard 43.4).

Kok River tributaries: The Fang and Laao tributaries met standards. The Korn tributary recorded 38 mg/kg nickel, exceeding safe levels.

Sai River: Two locations exceeded safe mercury standards—site SA01 at Ban Hua Fai with 25 mg/kg and site SA03 at Ban Pa Sang Ngam with 13 mg/kg.

Ruak River: Both sampling points showed severely hazardous mercury levels. Site RU01 at the Koh Chang water pumping station recorded 49 mg/kg mercury, 0.24 mg/kg mercury (standard 0.2), and 45 mg/kg chromium. Site RU02 at Tambon Wiang near the river mouth recorded 55 mg/kg mercury, 46 mg/kg nickel, and 61 mg/kg chromium, all at severely hazardous levels.

Mekong River: All four sampling locations showed severely hazardous mercury concentrations. Site NK01 at the Golden Triangle border checkpoint recorded 66 mg/kg. Site NK02 in Wiang, Chiang Saen recorded 80 mg/kg. Site NK03 at Ban Sop Kok recorded 50 mg/kg mercury, 0.22 mg/kg mercury, and 45 mg/kg chromium. Site NK04 at Ban Hua Wiang recorded 68 mg/kg mercury.
