Opposition Prepares No-Confidence Debate Against Government

Opposition coalition prepares no-confidence motion against government, with Pheu Thai to submit once timing is agreed; Democrats plan to highlight economic hardship, failed agricultural compensation, and price controls as vulnerabilities.

Opposition Prepares No-Confidence Debate Against Government
5 Aug Khaosod

On August 5, 2569, Chatchanon Detchadecho, a Democratic Party list MP and deputy party leader, spoke to reporters at Parliament about the opposition's plans to file a no-confidence motion. He said the Pheu Thai Party must be the one to submit it, and once the opposition coalition decides to proceed, the allied parties will discuss the timing among themselves. The opposition is ready, he confirmed, but the timing depends on Pheu Thai's schedule. He noted that when Parliament reconvenes, the priority will be debating the 2570 fiscal year budget bill in readings two and three before any no-confidence debate can proceed.

When asked what issues the Democratic Party would highlight and what vulnerabilities the government has, Chatchanon said the government's problems are plain to ordinary citizens—such as economic hardship and rising cost of living. He singled out Commerce Minister Supattanapong's portfolio, noting that although oil prices have dropped, consumer prices have not fallen, which is a clear weakness. He also criticized Deputy PM Akanut and Finance Minister Akanut over farmers' compensation funds that the government claims are exhausted, demanding they explain where the money went.

Chatchanon added that recent southern fruit-season crises—including mangosteen and durian problems—have given the opposition ample grounds for the no-confidence motion. He acknowledged that whether the debate will topple the government depends on whether the budget passes and whether the government loses a simple majority of votes. He stated that opposition parties are united and will perform their oversight role fully. "If there is a genuine no-confidence vote in September or October, it will be interesting and not theater," he said, pledging that the opposition will expose government failures not previously revealed to the public. When asked about rumors of political realignment, he said he could not answer and urged reporters to verify the source of such claims, as the Democratic Party, Kla Tham Party, and Pheu Thai Party have not discussed such matters with anyone.

Thailand Eyes Deep Run at Asian Games in Japan

Thailand's under-23 football team and women's volleyball squad are preparing for the Asian Games in Nagoya, with officials confident both teams can advance from group stages and medal contention.

5 Aug Khaosod

The Thai Sports Authority (TAT) has announced full preparations for two popular Thai team sports heading to the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan. U-23 men's football team "War Elephant" will compete in Group A alongside Japan (host), Kyrgyzstan, and Hong Kong, while the women's indoor volleyball team is placed in Group C with Chinese Taipei, Kyrgyzstan, and Mongolia.

TAT director Kongsakdi Yodmanee said Thailand's under-23 football squad views facing World Cup-caliber Japan as a valuable opportunity and believes the team will comfortably advance from the group stage with a genuine shot at the knockout round. He noted that such chances to play top-tier opponents are rare. Regarding women's volleyball, Kongsakdi expressed confidence the team will win at least a bronze medal, pointing to Thailand's history as a former Asian champion and previous Games medalist. He identified China, Japan, and South Korea as the main threats but remains optimistic about securing a medal.

The men's football tournament features 15 nations split into four groups: Group A has Japan, Thailand, Kyrgyzstan, and Hong Kong; Group B includes China, UAE, Iran, and North Korea; Group C features Vietnam, Uzbekistan, Philippines, and Kuwait; and Group D comprises South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. The women's volleyball competition has 14 teams across four groups, with top two finishers from each group advancing to the knockout stage.

Woman, 72, Drowns in Home Water Tank at Night

A 72-year-old woman drowned in a water tank outside her home in Chachoengsao after slipping on algae-covered edges during the night; her husband found her the next morning after searching for her.

Woman, 72, Drowns in Home Water Tank at Night
5 Aug Khaosod

A heartbreaking tragedy struck when a 72-year-old woman slipped and drowned in a water tank outside her home in the middle of the night, with no one witnessing the fatal accident. Her grief-stricken husband, 69, walked toward her body and tearfully said, "Let's go to the temple together, mother," leaving neighbors deeply moved.

Police in Muang Chachoengsao District received the report at 8:30 a.m. on August 5, 2026, and rushed to the scene with rescue units and a medical examiner from Buddhaso Hospital. Inside the water tank, which was covered with algae, they found the woman face-down in the water. One black sandal lay on the tank's edge, and a stick of incense placed by relatives was nearby. The husband stood weeping with profound sadness. Officers brought the body up for preliminary examination, and during this time the husband approached his wife's body and said, "Let's go to the temple together, mother," a moment that deeply affected the neighbors.

The husband disclosed that they had spent life together for many decades. He last saw his wife around 11 p.m. the night before, when he went inside to sleep while she remained outside. In the middle of the night, when he noticed she still had not come inside, he assumed she had gone to sleep at her sister's nearby house, as she occasionally did. Later, when he went to check at the sister's house and did not find her, he searched around the home with relatives until his grandson spotted her sandal in the water tank and saw her head floating beneath the algae-covered surface. She could not swim and likely slipped on the slippery algae when she came out and fell into the tank.

Village headman Chalermsai stated that the couple were long-time residents with no history of conflict. The deceased regularly washed dishes in that area. The night before, after heavy rain, the ground and tank edges were wet and covered with algae, so the woman likely slipped and fell into the water tank unseen by anyone.

Initial examination by the medical examiner found no signs of trauma or abnormalities, and the death was classified as an accident. The body was handed to Chachoengsao rescue workers and taken to Wat Ratsongcharoen Maneruddhi for religious rites at the family's request. Throughout the somber proceedings, the husband wept continuously, mourning the loss of his life partner of many decades.

5 Aug Khaosod

On August 5, 2024, Police Commissioner Kittarat Pansetchr ordered Deputy Commissioner Samran Nualma to lead a major law enforcement operation in Sukhirin district, Narathiwat, targeting a violent armed group responsible for an August 2 ambush that killed and wounded Tak Bai police officers in a palm plantation. The suspects also fled with two service pistols.

Regional Police Commander Piyawat Chlemsri, working with security units and national police headquarters staff, surrounded the target area in Ban Nam Tok village at 2:00 a.m. When officers moved in, the armed suspects opened intense fire to escape, triggering a fierce firefight. Officers returned fire in strict accordance with legal procedures until gunfire ceased. Two suspects were killed: 23-year-old Abdulmukalees, wanted on theft and drug charges with forensic DNA linking him to the recovered weapon, and 34-year-old Samman, wanted for murder and theft. A third suspect remains at large.

Investigations revealed the pair fled through three provinces before being tracked to Sukhirin. Both stolen police weapons were fully recovered during the operation, and all officers involved were unharmed. Piyawat confirmed all procedures followed evidence and proper tactics. Regarding the separate August 2 checkpoint shooting in Rangae district, authorities have identified 14 people involved, questioned 11, and have two deaths confirmed with one person still being pursued—the driver who helped the two deceased suspects escape.

Thailand Raises 2025 GDP Growth Forecast to 2% on Tech Exports, AI Investment

Thailand raised its 2025 GDP growth forecast to 1.6-2% driven by surging technology exports and AI investments, with exports now projected to grow 8-10% after earlier contraction predictions.

Thailand Raises 2025 GDP Growth Forecast to 2% on Tech Exports, AI Investment
5 Aug Khaosod

Payong Srivannich, chairman of the Thai Bankers Association and head of the three-institution joint private-sector committee, announced that the committee has revised Thailand's 2025 GDP growth forecast upward to 1.6-2% from the previous 1.2-1.6%. Export growth is now projected at 8-10%, a dramatic reversal from the earlier forecast of a 0.5-1.5% contraction, while inflation is estimated at 2.5-3% compared to the prior 2-3% estimate.

The upgrade stems from stronger-than-anticipated export and investment recovery, particularly in technology products benefiting from the global AI investment wave. Thai exports in the first half of this year grew 17.6% year-on-year, with technology products—accounting for 26.5% of total exports—surging 45.9%.

Payong noted that the global economy faces high uncertainty in the second half of 2025 from Middle East tensions, energy price pressures, inflation, and unclear global interest rate trajectories. However, the world economy is expanding in a K-shaped pattern, with countries leveraging digital and AI advantages, including Thailand, positioned for stronger growth than energy-import-dependent nations.

The committee concluded that Thailand must accelerate technology-sector growth by increasing domestic value addition through higher local content ratios, building domestic supply chains, and developing a workforce suited to new investment. Greater linkage between government and private data will improve economic policymaking precision.

The private sector has pledged support for five new government investment strategies: Investment & Industry Transformation Hub, AI & Digital Hub, Green Economy, Financial Hub, and Medical Hub—mechanisms to attract foreign direct investment. ASEAN-bound FDI is projected to exceed $544 billion by 2025, with Thailand remaining a key target. Investment promotion requests through the Board of Investment in the first half reached 1.47 trillion baht, a 37% year-on-year increase, positioning Thailand for structural economic reform and stronger long-term growth.

Thai authorities on Koh Samui have launched an investigation into reports of foreigners threatening and assaulting local residents, with the Interior Ministry vowing strict enforcement regardless of nationality or status.

Interior Minister Orders Crackdown on Foreigners Threatening Thais
5 Aug Khaosod

Interior Ministry Deputy Vorrasing Liangprasetth announced on August 5 that following complaints of Thai citizens being threatened and assaulted by foreigners on Koh Samui, he has issued urgent orders to the Surat Thani Governor and Samui District Chief to investigate immediately. The ministry will coordinate all relevant agencies and will not tolerate any incidents that undermine public safety, with strict and impartial legal action against anyone, regardless of nationality or status, found to have violated the law.

Liangprasetth added that authorities will conduct comprehensive inspections of related businesses, including their operations, land use, property ownership, employment practices, permits, and compliance with Thai law, to ensure transparency and build confidence among law-abiding residents and tourists.

Thailand welcomes tourists and investors acting in good faith, but will not tolerate anyone using influence, violence, or abuse of power to intimidate Thai citizens. Public safety is the Interior Ministry's priority, and authorities have been ordered to report findings urgently and address any law enforcement gaps to prevent recurrence. Provincial governors and district chiefs across major tourism areas have been instructed to closely monitor situations and immediately assist residents when incidents occur, affirming that the state will not leave people to face problems alone.

Thailand Auto-Exempts Old Vehicles From Welfare Card Criteria
5 Aug Khaosod

Transport Deputy Minister Siripong Angsakulkiattrakul announced on August 5, 2569 (2026) that the Department of Land Transport has completed preparations to streamline the state welfare card eligibility criteria. The government will automatically exempt owners of vehicles over 20 years old or motorcycles over 15 years old from certain assessment requirements, potentially benefiting approximately 1 million people based on current data. By mid-August, the department will consolidate all information and submit it to the Ministry of Finance for the first round of eligibility review.

Since the cabinet meeting, over 200,000 citizens have submitted additional appeals at transport offices. Officials are handling complaints from all channels and expediting case-by-case resolutions. The implementation is expected to result in 2-3 million additional people qualifying for state welfare card benefits.

Beyond Transport Ministry efforts, the Prime Minister has instructed the Interior Ministry to open one-stop service centers at all district offices nationwide. Officials will also conduct home visits to assist vulnerable groups such as the elderly and disabled who cannot travel easily. These citizens can wait at home or inform their village headmen of their needs, who will coordinate with district offices directly. "This approach will reduce anxiety and ensure no villager is overlooked in receiving these welfare benefits," Siripong stated.
