Police arrested two young men, Suwannachat (surname withheld), 23, and Amarin (surname withheld), 22, after they stole an orange‑colored rowboat and oar that a 57‑year‑old villager had been using to ferry sandbags and other relief items during flooding. The men told investigators they had gone to visit a friend in the village and, finding no transport home, saw the boat tied to a power pole, untied it, and paddled back to their houses.
The owner reported the boat missing after it disappeared on the night of September 28. After seeing CCTV footage of the theft posted on a local news page, the suspects tried to return the boat through an acquaintance, but police apprehended them first. The owner thanked authorities and journalists for helping recover the vessel, noting it is essential for moving goods and supplies while many roads remain impassable due to high floodwater.
Police Colonel Direk Phoethipan said the theft occurred while residents were already suffering from the floods, calling it an aggravation of their hardship. The suspects have been charged with nighttime theft and theft in a flood‑affected area. The recovered boat will be returned to the community for immediate use rather than being held as evidence, and police urged the public not to exploit the disaster for personal gain, adding that regular patrols and volunteer teams will continue to monitor shelters and roadside parking areas.
