Phuket police are taking a hard line against teenage gangs that disturb the peace after dark. Following online reports and resident complaints about groups of motorcyclists revving engines, making noise, and setting off fireworks and firecrackers, authorities launched a nighttime crackdown ahead of the annual Vegetarian Festival. Phuket Provincial Police Chief Pol. Lt. Gen. Surachai Suk sai directed all stations to increase patrols and enforcement, focusing on youths gathering late at night. In operation, Phuket City Police detained four individuals for causing a public nuisance, while Wichit Police detained 35 youths and seized 20 motorcycles after finding them in possession of fireworks or firecrackers. The motorcycles were seized under traffic and vehicle laws. Legal penalties include up to three months imprisonment or fines of 5,000–10,000 baht for illegal street racing, and up to three months or fines of 2,000–10,000 baht for reckless endangerment, with possible confiscation of the vehicle. Unauthorized fireworks or firecrackers that cause danger or nuisance may violate explosives laws, with penalties varying by severity. Noise disturbances can fall under Criminal Code Sections 370 and 397, carrying fines up to 1,000 baht and 5,000 baht respectively. If fireworks cause fires or endanger life and property, charges can be more serious. Police also summoned parents of the detained youths to inform them of their children's behavior and warned that negligence or support for such activities could lead to legal action. Seven adults were charged for allegedly supporting the youths' gatherings, and police will examine each case for incitement or encouragement of misconduct. Officers urged parents, guardians, and anyone involved in organizing or supporting the races, assemblies, or fireworks to cooperate and exercise supervision.
