On August 18, 2025, Metropolitan Police Bureau officials raided a distribution center in the Pathumwan area of Bangkok following intelligence about illegal transport of counterfeit allergy medicine branded "Allergin Syrub." Officers inspected a box truck at the distribution point and discovered brown bottles with blue labels packed in 103 cardboard cases, totaling approximately 20,000 units ready for shipment to southern Thailand.

The operation resulted from sustained investigation by Bangkok Metropolitan Police. Officers tracked the merchandise distribution route and identified the driver, Somkiat, who was transporting the products for a company. Authorities are pursuing charges against him and expanding the investigation to include upstream suppliers and all involved parties.

Initial examination confirmed the syrup as counterfeit and revealed it was being used as an ingredient in bootleg herbal remedies labeled "4×100." Police are coordinating with the legitimate product owner to verify the counterfeiting and prepare charges under pharmaceutical law, trademark law, and related statutes.

Investigators determined the smuggling operation has been running for approximately one month, with shipments sent to multiple southern provinces and Phuket receiving particularly large quantities. The seized batch alone exceeds 20,000 bottles worth approximately 1.4 million baht at the street price of 70 baht per bottle. If daily shipments averaged 10,000 bottles over the month-long operation, total circulation could exceed 300,000 bottles.

Police warn anyone using counterfeit allergy products to mix with herbal remedies to exercise caution, as the seized goods pose potential health risks to consumers. Authorities are intensifying efforts to apprehend additional suspects, particularly those controlling the supply chain and distribution network operating in southern Thailand.

A 39-year-old man who disappeared in the early hours of August 16 has been found dead, floating face-down in a village pond. Police and rescue teams from Khon Buri District in Nakhon Ratchasima Province responded on August 18 to find over 50 family members and villagers at the scene. The man's shoes were discovered abandoned on a village road, and his motorcycle was parked nearby. An initial autopsy revealed no signs of injury or assault.

After the man went missing, relatives and villagers, along with wildlife monitoring officials, conducted a search overnight on August 17 through the morning of August 18 using drones and ground teams across the protected forest area of Lower Khon Buri Subdistrict. The victim had a history of alcohol-related delusions in which he feared people were trying to harm him.

A village resident discovering the body while collecting water vegetables from a pond about 50 meters from where the shoes were found alerted the community leader and relatives before notifying police. The body has been sent for detailed autopsy and legal investigation. According to family members, this marks the fourth drowning death in the extended family, including the victim's father.

Northern Thailand Braces for Heavy Monsoon Rains August 19–21

Northern Thailand faces severe monsoon storms August 19–21, with heavy rainfall, thunderstorms affecting most of the region, and warnings issued for flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas.

Northern Thailand Braces for Heavy Monsoon Rains August 19–21
13h ago Khaosod

The Northern Thailand Meteorological Center has issued a weather warning for severe monsoon conditions affecting the northern region from August 18–23, with the heaviest rainfall expected on August 19–21. Director Prasert Purathanang announced the forecast at a Chiang Mai media briefing, noting that thunderstorms will affect 60–80 percent of the northern region, with some areas experiencing continuous heavy rainfall. Temperatures will range from 20–29°C at night to 28–35°C during the day, with southwesterly winds at 10–20 kilometers per hour.

The severe weather is caused by a monsoon trough passing over the northern and upper northeastern regions, combined with a strong southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand. Residents in low-lying areas, foothill zones, and high-risk areas are warned to be prepared for flash floods, river flooding, and landslides. The meteorological center urges the public to closely monitor weather forecasts and official warnings, avoid travel through flooded areas, and those in at-risk zones should move valuables to higher ground.

Looking ahead, the northern region is expected to experience intermittent heavy rainfall through August and September due to the continued influence of the monsoon trough and southwest monsoon, with a possible impact from tropical cyclones. August is forecast to see 190–230 millimeters of rainfall across the north, about 10 percent below normal, while Chiang Mai will receive 150–200 millimeters. September is projected to have 160–200 millimeters regionally, 20 percent below normal. Year-to-date rainfall in the north stands at 581.9 millimeters, significantly less than the 1,604.5 millimeters recorded during the same period in 2024.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has issued an urgent order for three civil servants involved in an illegal identification card scheme to be removed from duty, effective August 18, 2026. The order comes as part of a crackdown operation called "Sweep the Middle of Bangkok" aimed at investigating and apprehending those responsible for issuing pink identity cards (Category 7 numbers) to foreign nationals' children without proper Thai citizenship eligibility.

Police General Adisorn Ngamjitsuuksri, an advisor to the Bangkok governor, announced the joint operation targeting the corruption network. Governor Chadchart has instructed the directors of Din Daeng and Lak Si districts to issue immediate orders for the three officials to step down, with the suspension taking effect from August 18, 2026. Simultaneously, the Bangkok administration has appointed a disciplinary investigation committee for all three officials, with the case proceeding in parallel with criminal prosecution by Din Daeng Police Station.

The administration has also ordered the Din Daeng district office to urgently review all residency transfers and public identity card applications, with special emphasis on records bearing numbers starting with 7. Initial reports indicate 47 rooms across Din Daeng apartments with foreign names listed at 16 or more addresses, including buildings in Pracharasongkhro Soi 1, 5, 6, 7, 11, and Mitmaitri Road, totaling approximately 1,468 individuals. District directors across all 50 districts have been instructed to strictly audit residency data, particularly cases showing unusual clusters of address transfers. The public is encouraged to report suspicious residency registration activity through the Traffy Fondue app, with informant identities kept confidential.

On August 18, security camera footage from a restaurant in Nakhon Nayok Province captured dramatic footage of lightning striking a rain tree as a chef walked toward his parked vehicle just meters away. The man quickly ran back into the restaurant to safety.

Reporters later visited the scene and interviewed Natthawut, 25, the restaurant employee and incident survivor, who showed them the parking area and the point where the lightning hit the tree.

Natthawut recounted that the incident occurred around 4:20 p.m. during heavy rain and thunderstorms. He had opened an umbrella and was retrieving items from his car parked near the rain tree when lightning suddenly struck the tree, sending wood fragments scattering across the area. Startled, he ran back into the restaurant. Moments later, a large branch of the tree, measuring more than 5 meters long, came crashing down. Chiang Mai provincial authorities are preparing to handle flooding, flash floods, and landslides in response to directives from Chiang Mai Governor Ratthapon Naradisorn. Savings Group Leader Jailed for Embezzling 1.7 Million Baht

A savings group chairman in Phitsanulok was sentenced to 18 months in prison for embezzling 1.7 million baht from 170 members, with the court ordering asset seizure to compensate victims who have waited since 2020 to recover their deposits.

Savings Group Leader Jailed for Embezzling 1.7 Million Baht
14h ago Khaosod

A court sentenced the chairman of a savings group to 18 months in prison after he misappropriated deposits from 170 members totaling more than 1.7 million baht and failed to repay them. The court also ordered asset seizure and sale to recover funds for the victims. Villagers expressed frustration about wanting their money back most of all.

On August 18, 2016, at Phitsanulok Provincial Court, 30 villagers from Ban Tha Chang, Thambon Tha Chang, Amphoe Phrom Phiram, Phitsanulok Province, attended the verdict after members of the Tha Chang Savings Group had their deposits misused by the group leader for personal expenses. Complaints had been filed continuously since 2020. The court ordered the defendant to compensate 1.7 million baht to 60 households totaling 170 people. Since the defendant had no funds to pay, the court sentenced him to 18 months imprisonment and ordered asset seizure and sale to repay the victims.

After the three village representatives finished hearing the verdict in court, they met with 30 waiting villagers by the Nan River in Phitsanulok, where residents expressed despair. Though the court ordered imprisonment for 18 months, what villagers wanted most was their stolen deposits returned.

Nai Theerawat Thin Thap, village headman of Moo 2, Tambon Tha Chang, revealed he came with about 30 affected villagers whose deposits were embezzled by the Tha Chang Savings Group chairman. They have struggled throughout this process and sympathize deeply with villagers unable to access their own money.

Nang Nam Fon, 67, one of the victims, stated that despite the court's imprisonment order and asset seizure for compensation, she felt deeply discouraged. As ordinary villagers, they had to follow procedures since 2020 when withdrawals stopped and complaints were filed with the Phrom Phiram District Development Office. After the group chairman admitted to using villagers' money for personal expenses and promised to repay, residents split into two groups—one that did not file charges and another that filed a criminal case. Following police investigation and prosecution, multiple settlement attempts occurred. The most recent mediation on July 16, 2019 showed the defendant still had no money, claiming land had not yet sold.

Today, August 18, 2019, the court scheduled another hearing where the defendant again had no money to repay, so the court ordered 18 months imprisonment and asset seizure for compensation. Some families whose deposits were stolen have already passed away, unable to withdraw funds for their children's education or to arrange funeral expenses for relatives. Though they struggled throughout and felt deeply discouraged, some could not withdraw funds.

Nang Om Fa, 68, stated she deposited a total of 267,000 baht and attempted multiple withdrawals but never succeeded even once. She sought to withdraw funds for her grandson's military officer examination but could not. Most painfully, when her mother died, she needed cash for funeral arrangements but could not withdraw money. When she learned the chairman had spent all the deposits on personal expenses, she joined others in filing a complaint at Phrom Phiram Police Station. Today the court sentenced him to prison and ordered full repayment.

Grandfather Arrested for Attempting to Assault 17-Year-Old Granddaughter
14h ago Khaosod

On August 18, 2025, Paveena Hongskul, chair of the Paveena Hongskul Foundation for Children and Women, announced that the foundation had coordinated with Lieutenant Colonel Thawachai Norasinghe, superintendent of Phanom Thuan Police Station in Kanchanaburi, to arrest a 60-year-old grandfather who attempted to sexually assault his 17-year-old granddaughter. Police also recovered 60 methamphetamine pills from his home and are proceeding with legal action.

The case began when the mother, working in Chanthaburi, contacted the foundation for help. Her daughter had been living with the grandfather in Kanchanaburi and had experienced sexual abuse and attempted assault since age 13. The mother only learned of the situation early that morning when her daughter sent an audio recording of the grandfather's assault attempt from the previous night. The terrified teenager fled to a nearby temple, where monks and village elders provided protection and assistance.

Paveena Hongskul coordinated with village elders to take the girl to a safe house and immediately informed Lieutenant Colonel Thawachai, who deployed investigators. A search of the grandfather's home uncovered 60 methamphetamine pills. A urine test confirmed drug use, leading to charges for drug possession and use. The mother has scheduled a meeting with police at 9:00 a.m. on August 19 for questioning and to arrange a medical examination for her daughter, with professional team involvement before formal charges are filed for sexual abuse and attempted rape. Hongskul thanked police for their rapid response and said the foundation will continue supporting the girl in coordination with the Ministry of Social Development and the Department of Rights and Liberties under the Justice Ministry to pursue victim compensation.
