The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department has issued alerts for 39 provinces across Thailand to prepare for heavy rainfall, flash floods, flash runoff, landslides, waterlogging, and strong waves between August 18-21, 2025. Seventeen northern provinces are on alert for flash floods and landslides, including Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Phrae, Nan, Uthai Thani, Tak, Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet, Phitsanulok, Phichit, Phetchabun, and Nakhon Sawan. The Central Command has coordinated with 42 provinces and local disaster prevention centers to prepare for increased rainfall and potential flooding, with instructions to monitor weather closely, deploy emergency response teams and machinery to high-risk areas, establish temporary shelters, and close natural attractions such as waterfalls and caves if necessary. For strong waves, maritime authorities are instructed to issue warnings and prohibit water activities on beaches, and notify fishing crews and boat operators.

Two Morning News Anchors Exit Workpoint Amid Budget Cuts

Two Morning News Anchors Exit Workpoint Amid Budget Cuts
2d ago Khaosod

Two prominent morning news anchors have announced their departures from the morning news programme, expressing sadness about the changes while acknowledging that such transitions are inevitable. They thanked loyal viewers who have supported the show over many years.

Banjong Cheevamonkolkarn, executive editor at Workpoint News, announced he will leave the Morning News Workpoint programme at the end of August 2026 and transition to full-time freelance work with no further contract with the channel. Senior anchor Pae Supaponchai will also depart from the programme.

Banjong revealed that a major budget reduction at Workpoint News last month affected approximately 60 percent of the news department's staff. He entered an early retirement programme last August to help preserve the news team, but continued working on both the morning news show and the evening news programme Chong Khao Khao Jao, which was later reformatted with other hosts.

He expressed mixed emotions about the transition: "Change is something we must accept, especially in television where change is constant. But even understanding that, I must admit my heart is not willing to let go."

Banjong noted he has worked with Workpoint News since the news department was established on January 1, 2016—more than 10 years—and has accumulated countless memories and experiences. He thanked management, staff, and especially viewers for their loyalty over the years.

He confirmed that while he and Pae will no longer appear on the morning news show, he will continue hosting the evening programme Chong Khao Khao Jao from Monday to Friday, inviting viewers to follow him there instead.

Fire Destroys 80-Year-Old Teacher's Home, Coffin Found Inside

A fire engulfed the home of Porpisin, a retired 80-year-old teacher nicknamed "Khru Aad," in Bang Pa Han district, Ayutthaya province, at 11:30 p.m. on August 16, 2025. Police Lieutenant Colonel Artit Simjaroen, commander of Bang Pa Han Police Station, coordinated with more than 10 fire trucks from the local administrative organization and Phutthaithaisawan Foundation. The single-story Thai-style wooden house caught fire intensely, with strong winds carrying flames to an adjacent pile of old wood. Firefighters took about an hour to control the blaze. Khru Aad safely evacuated but suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to Bang Pa Han Hospital.

Neighbors reported hearing loud cracking sounds and explosions before the rapid spread of flames. Investigation found the old wood pile and a makeshift stove where Khru Aad cooked for two to three dogs in the evening; a previous fire had occurred in that area but was extinguished before spreading to the house.

When authorities inspected the interior, they were stunned to discover a coffin on the second floor containing the remains of Khru Aad's wife, a retired teacher who had died over 20 years ago. Community members explained that Khru Aad was deeply attached to his wife. Although neighbors had suggested he hold a funeral and he once set a date, he cancelled and continued keeping her remains at home. Locals were familiar with the coffin on the second floor. After the fire was controlled, the coffin had fallen to the lower floor and was largely consumed by flames, leaving only bones.

Meteorology Department Warns of Heavy Rain in 24 Provinces

Heavy rain and flooding threaten 24 Thai provinces over the next 24 hours as a monsoon trough brings strong storms across the north, northeast, east, and south regions.

Meteorology Department Warns of Heavy Rain in 24 Provinces
2d ago Khaosod

The Meteorology Department warned on August 17, 2569, that heavy rain will continue over the next 24 hours across the northern, upper northeastern, eastern, and western southern regions due to a monsoon trough extending from Myanmar and northern Laos into a low-pressure zone over northern Vietnam, combined with strong southwest winds covering the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand. Residents in affected areas are urged to prepare for potential flash floods, mudslides, and riverbank overflow, particularly in hillside and low-lying areas near waterways. Waves in the upper Andaman Sea are expected to reach 2-3 meters, with heights exceeding 3 meters in thunderstorm areas. Fishermen in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand are advised to navigate with caution and avoid thunderstorm zones, while small boats in the upper Andaman Sea should remain ashore. Detailed forecasts show thunderstorms affecting 60 percent of the northern region (Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Tak, and Phetchabun provinces), 40 percent of the upper northeast (Bueng Kan, Sakon Nakhon, and Nakhon Phanom), 40 percent of the central region (Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Kanchanaburi, and Ratchaburi), 40 percent of the east (Chanthaburi and Trat), 40 percent of the eastern south coast (Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Songkhla), and 60 percent of the western south (Ranong, Trang, and Satun). Temperatures range from 22-28°C (low) to 30-37°C (high) depending on region, with southwest winds at 10-40 km/h. Sea conditions remain rough with elevated wave heights in stormy areas.

Couple Dies in Luxury Home Fire in Nonthaburi

A married couple died in a luxury home fire in Nonthaburi's Bang Sai Muang district early August 17, with investigators finding petrol spread throughout the house and a fuel canister near the stairs. Both victims died from smoke inhalation

Couple Dies in Luxury Home Fire in Nonthaburi

Bang Sai Muang police received a report of a house fire in an upscale residential development in Nonthaburi's Bang Sai Muang district at 12:30 a.m. on August 17, 2025. Officers and firefighters from Bang Sai Muang and Bang Kraeng municipalities responded to a two-storey detached house covering approximately 80 square metres, where flames were active on the second floor. Three fire trucks took over 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

After the fire was extinguished, investigators found that the ground floor had minimal fire damage but contained petrol spread across the floor. A 20-litre fuel canister was discovered near the stairs to the second floor. The second floor was heavily damaged by fire, with all windows shattered. Inside a bedroom, investigators found the bodies of a married couple lying on a bed, severely burned. A charcoal stove was also found in a bathroom. Multiple pet cats were discovered dead throughout the house, though two survived and were rushed to an animal hospital.

Initial examination by a forensic doctor indicated both deaths were caused by smoke inhalation and burning, but identification could not be confirmed immediately as identification documents were destroyed in the fire. The bodies were scheduled for detailed autopsy at the Institute of Forensic Medicine. Authorities planned to contact the residential community administration to identify the deceased and notify their relatives, and would conduct a further investigation with Nonthaburi police.

A 24-year-old neighbour, using the alias N., recounted that she first heard a loud noise like something heavy falling, followed by seeing smoke and flames. She initially thought there had been an explosion, but realized it was the sound of a ceiling panel crashing down. About two to three people came out of the house, and everyone smelled fuel. Neighbours called emergency services and attempted to reach the homeowners by phone without success. Security guards arrived, assessed the situation as serious, and soon after, the bedroom window exploded from the heat. The neighbour noted that only a couple lived there with several pet cats, and the initial outbreak appeared around 11:50 p.m. as smoke before flames spread.

Tosapol Fakprapai, secretary to the Bang Sai Muang municipality chief, said that upon receiving the fire report, firefighters deployed to contain the blaze. Upon arrival, they found the fire on the second floor and encountered significant obstacles during suppression due to the presence of petrol—when water was sprayed, the fuel ran with the water, making it difficult for the team to reach the second floor. After extinguishing the fire, two bodies were found along with eight dead cats. Initial evidence included the fuel canister and a pervasive smell of petrol throughout the bedroom.

Monk Abandons Damaged Car, Found 2km Away Claiming Woman's Ghost Was With Him

A Buddhist monk abandoned his damaged sedan at an intersection in Udon Thani and was found walking 2km away, claiming a female ghost had been riding with him before police located him and arranged for relatives to take him for medical care.

Monk Abandons Damaged Car, Found 2km Away Claiming Woman's Ghost Was With Him
2d ago Khaosod

A broom vendor discovered a monk who had crashed his sedan with a badly crumpled front end at a four-way intersection and could no longer drive, before abandoning the vehicle and walking away. Police tracked him down 2 kilometers away, where he claimed a female ghost had been riding with him and hurriedly called relatives to come pick him up for urgent care.

On August 16, 2025, officers from Muang Udon Thani Police Station in Udon Thani Province received a report of a monk who had crashed his sedan and left the vehicle at the Phalai intersection on the Udon Thani Bypass Road in Muang District, then walked away. Police quickly traveled to the scene to investigate.

Upon arrival, they found a black sedan registered in Maha Sarakham Province parked near the curved section by the intersection, with severe front-end damage. The broom vendor explained that he saw the car stopped in the middle of the road, so he approached to ask about it. He found the driver was a Buddhist monk who initially seemed startled. The monk appeared to be trembling and speaking incoherently.

"At first I thought he was drunk, so I asked nearby vendors to help push the car to the side of the road because I was afraid there would be another accident," the vendor said. "Then the monk asked about a tuk-tuk, saying he wanted to go to Nong Noi village, but no tuk-tuk would take him, so he just walked away and left the car there. When I asked the monk how he crashed the front of the car, he claimed the car had been hit 2-3 days ago."

Officers later found the monk walking along the roadside 2 kilometers from the accident site. Upon questioning, they learned he was 46 years old and had been ordained for one Buddhist year, claiming to belong to a forest temple in Maha Sarakham Province. He spoke confusedly, insisting that a woman had traveled with him and that he later realized she was a ghost. He claimed the vehicle damage came from hitting a tree inside the temple grounds.

Officers contacted his relatives, who reported that the monk had a history of mental health treatment and were already coming to pick him up. Officers took him to a temporary shelter to wait for his relatives to arrive and take him home for further care.

A teacher brought three junior secondary students to compete in a provincial boxing tournament selection. On the return trip, the teacher appeared intoxicated, driving in circles through the same area multiple times and swerving dangerously close to other vehicles. Fearing an accident, the students decided to jump from the vehicle for their safety.

At 7:30 p.m. on August 16, 2025, officers from Muang Sri Saket Police Station in Sri Saket Province received a report of three male youths needing assistance near a rice mill on the Sri Saket-Kantharalak road. Upon arrival, police found the three students inside the Bangsaorhot Chaiyame Rice Mill Company, Sri Saket branch, where company security staff were helping them charge their phones and contact their parents. The three were junior secondary students and school boxers from an institution in Sri Saket Province. Their teacher had accompanied them to an international boxing competition for provincial selection but appeared intoxicated on the return journey.

The students explained that during the drive home, the teacher appeared to have consumed alcohol and was intoxicated. He drove the vehicle in circles repeatedly through the same area and swerved across lanes, nearly colliding with other cars several times. Feeling frightened and fearing an accident, they decided to exit the vehicle for safety. The vehicle was a small pickup truck with a roof structure resembling a school shuttle. After jumping from the van, the students sought help from the rice mill's security staff to report the incident to police and contact the teacher in another district for pickup. Following police investigation and coordination with relevant parties, the teacher arrived and took the three students home safely.

Officials Confirm Monastery Land Rights, Proceed With Title Transfer

Officials confirmed Wat Pa Adulyaram in Khon Kaen legitimately owns disputed land since 1998 and will expedite the title transfer process after three decades of delay.

Officials Confirm Monastery Land Rights, Proceed With Title Transfer
2d ago Khaosod

On the evening of August 16, 2026, at Wat Pa Adulyaram in Khon Kaen Municipality, Professor Thongthong Chanthrangsu, chairman of the National Committee for the Protection of Buddhism, led a delegation from the National Office of Buddhism and Khon Kaen's Buddhist Affairs Office to pay respects to the monastery's abbot, Phra Kru Adulasarinimithet. The visit aimed to offer support and follow up on the abbot's health as well as the ongoing land dispute between the monastery and the heirs of a deceased local resident, drawing a large crowd of Buddhist supporters.

Thongthong confirmed that the land belongs entirely to the monastery and that it was properly established and announced in the Government Gazette in 1998. He stated that the National Office of Buddhism has clarified that the original land title deed is in the monastery's custody and has informed the provincial land office accordingly. Land office procedures are now underway to process complaints related to the disputed documents.

The main outstanding issue is updating the government land title deed to reflect the monastery's name, despite the monastery having owned and maintained the property for many decades. Officials pledged to expedite and complete the title transfer as efficiently as possible. The abbot remarked with good humor that after waiting 30 years, he could wait a bit longer, to which Thongthong replied that he too could not afford further delays and would push for the fastest and best resolution.

Thongthong also assured the community that police and local authorities would maintain security and order at the temple to protect monks and devotees performing religious activities. He relayed two important messages from the abbot: first, devotees should remain calm, as the abbot himself is not stressed and assures everyone that the matter is in hand; second, the abbot cautioned believers to remain vigilant and not fall victim to scams. He warned against imposters claiming to be intermediaries collecting donations on his behalf, urging anyone wishing to make merit at the temple to do so directly by scanning the official QR code provided by the monastery.
