Nong Bua Lamphu — A 68-year-old man was found dead inside a charcoal kiln after he was believed to have inhaled toxic smoke while crawling inside to collect charcoal that was still smouldering. His body was burned down to only a small amount of bone, making identification difficult.

Pol. Lt. Col. Songkran Kanesuk, a deputy investigation inspector at Mueang Nong Bua Lamphu Police Station, was notified that human bones had been found burned inside a charcoal kiln in a rice field about 3 kilometres from a village. He coordinated with an on-duty doctor from Nong Bua Lamphu Hospital and the Khuntham Nong Bua Lamphu rescue team to inspect the scene.

The incident took place in the area of Ban Nong Saeng, Moo 8, Hua Na subdistrict, Mueang district, Nong Bua Lamphu province. Police found a large charcoal kiln measuring about 3 metres in diameter. Its opening was about 60 centimetres wide and 80 centimetres high, large enough for a person to crawl inside.

Parts of the kiln had been broken open, except around the entrance. Village headman Saiyan said villagers had broken open the structure so they could spray water inside and put out the flames. Rescue workers used lights and hoes to search inside the kiln. They recovered a small amount of white bone fragments and placed them in a cloth. Most of the remains were tiny and badly fragmented.

The man who discovered the remains was identified as 27-year-old Thawatchai Hueangsri, the grandson of 68-year-old Veera Dana, who owned the rice field and charcoal kiln. Thawatchai told investigators that Veera normally stayed overnight in the rice field and only occasionally returned home when he had errands to attend to.

Thawatchai said he last saw his grandfather that morning when Veera came home and asked him to buy painkillers because he was suffering from pain in his legs due to his age. Veera left home at about 07:00, telling his grandson that he planned to open the kiln and take out charcoal to sell. He then disappeared.

At about 19:00, Veera's younger brother went to the family home looking for him. Thawatchai was asked to go to the rice field and bring his grandfather back to meet his brother in the village. When Thawatchai arrived, he searched the area and called out for Veera but received no response. His bicycle and personal belongings were still there, but Veera was nowhere to be found.

He then looked inside the charcoal kiln and saw that its entrance had been opened, with signs that someone had already removed some charcoal. However, flames were still burning inside. Thawatchai said he shone a light into the kiln and saw what appeared to be a human hip bone. A stainless-steel basin about 30 centimetres in diameter was lying nearby.

He immediately suspected that the remains belonged to his grandfather because Veera had told him he would be opening the kiln that day. Thawatchai alerted relatives and village authorities, who contacted police. Villagers then helped break open the kiln and spray water inside.

Constitutional Court Dismisses Khlong Khao Candidate's Election Complaint

Thailand's Constitutional Court dismissed an election complaint from a Khlong Khao party candidate in Nakhon Si Thammarat who challenged his removal from the ballot roster, ruling the matter had already been decided by other courts.

Constitutional Court Dismisses Khlong Khao Candidate's Election Complaint
5d ago Khaosod

On August 13, 2025, the Constitutional Court unanimously ruled against Kong Kiart Ketsumabot, a former House of Representatives candidate from Khlong Khao party in Nakhon Si Thammarat's District 7, who sought a constitutional ruling under Article 213. Ketsumabot argued he suffered harm from actions by the Election Commission, its chairman, the provincial election authority, and the Supreme Court's election division, which ordered his removal from the candidate roster under Section 42(12) of the 2018 Election of Members of the House of Representatives Act on grounds he fell into a prohibited category. He contended this violated his rights and freedoms under the Constitution. The court found that the facts presented showed the respondents' actions had already been finally decided by other courts under the Constitutional Court Procedure Act 2018, Section 47(4), making the petition inadmissible. Regarding his claim that Section 42(12) conflicted with constitutional provisions, the court noted such constitutional review requests are subject to specific criteria under the Constitution's Articles 212 and 231(1), and the petition failed to meet the required standards under Sections 47(2) and 48. The court also unanimously rejected a separate petition from Wattana Chomchai, who alleged the Election Commission's ballot design for the referendum failed to include options for article-by-article constitutional amendments, and accused officials of providing inaccurate referendum statistics. The court determined these matters similarly fell outside its jurisdiction.

Election Commission Approves Secretary Reappointment
5d ago Khaosod

The Election Commission held a closed meeting on August 13, 2025, to review Sawaeng Boonmee's fiscal-year 2568 performance. The current board voted 5-2 to pass his evaluation, permitting him to remain as secretary until his contract expires on March 31, 2025.

This vote reversed a prior assessment by the previous Election Commission board chaired by Ittiphon Boonprakong, which had rated Sawaeng's performance below the 60 percent benchmark, a result that would have triggered his removal under contract terms. The current board cited contractual provisions requiring the sitting commission to conduct evaluations and noted that precedent does not allow former boards to assess incoming officials. On July 15, the board voted to nullify the previous evaluation and conduct its own assessment, resulting in today's passing vote.

A Chiang Mai school principal admitted to striking a student on the head during a flag ceremony, prompting an investigation and disciplinary committee after video of the incident went viral on social media.

School Director Admits Using Force, Disciplinary Committee Convenes

A school principal in Mae Waang District, Chiang Mai, has admitted to striking a student on the head during a flag-raising ceremony after a video went viral. The Chiang Mai Primary Education Area Office District 4 has established an investigative committee and deployed a team to provide psychological support to the child and family.

Parents posted security camera footage complaining that the principal struck a male student on the head while children lined up for the flag ceremony. The video captured a clear sound of impact before the administrator asked the child, "Who else wants this?" The incident occurred on a classroom veranda while students were lined up for an activity, with two boys playfully roughhousing. Parents objected to the use of force and demanded that authorities investigate.

After the video was shared on July 31, 2566, widespread criticism erupted, with calls for the principal to be investigated and disciplined if violence was confirmed. On August 23, 2566, Sayan Kamlua, deputy director of the Chiang Mai Primary Education Area Office District 4, announced that the incident occurred on July 8, 2566. After receiving the complaint, the office immediately dispatched two investigative teams.

The personnel division launched an inquiry, forming a disciplinary committee against the principal. Investigators found that the school, which serves kindergarten through sixth grade with 58 students and 8 teachers, had all staff conducting examinations elsewhere that day, leaving the principal alone to manage the school and teach. During the morning assembly, children became unruly as usual, and the principal issued multiple warnings. Amid the commotion, stressed and acting on impulse, the principal disciplined the child by striking him, later admitting to losing composure and using force. The education office is proceeding with disciplinary measures, which may include transfer out of the area and punishment according to committee decision and ministry regulations.

Meanwhile, a promotion team with a psychologist visited to provide mental health support to the punished student and his family, with reconciliation and mediation talks between both parties planned this week. The school has security cameras accessible to teachers, school board members, and parents for monitoring purposes. The footage was shared online when it became newsworthy.

Dr. Panth Aruneekul stated that the programme serves as a critical mechanism to strengthen the knowledge, understanding, and capabilities of council members and administrators, enabling them to apply governance principles in institutional oversight and management with efficiency, transparency, accountability, and responsibility in line with the Higher Education Act of 2019. The training programme functions as a platform for exchanging knowledge, experience, and case studies to be applied in institutional management, while promoting each institution's strengths in technology, innovation, community development, social innovation, and workforce development aligned with industry needs. Dr. Panth Aruneekul emphasized that the ministry prioritizes budget allocation for higher education development alongside enhanced governance and transparency, with council members and administrators serving as key mechanisms to foster environments conducive to change and innovation, enabling Thai universities to create positive impacts on the economy, society, and nation.

Wildlife Smuggling Bust at Suvarnabhumi: 120 Reptiles Seized
5d ago Khaosod

On August 13, 2025, the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, working through the Wildlife Inspection Unit at Suvarnabhumi Airport alongside customs investigators and the Suvarnabhumi Postal Center, intercepted an illegal wildlife export operation. More than 120 living reptiles were seized, hidden in postal boxes with false declarations of dried fruit and food, destined for the Philippines. Authorities are pursuing the sender for prosecution.

The seizure occurred on August 12 after officials analyzed risk data on prohibited items at Suvarnabhumi Postal Center near the cargo inspection building in the free trade zone at Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bang Phli District, Samut Prakan Province. Two international registered parcels showed suspicious objects on X-ray scan, prompting detailed inspection.

The parcels, listed as originating from Surat Thani Province and addressed to the Philippines, contained live reptiles packed in cloth bags and clear plastic boxes: four sulcata tortoises, 16 iguanas, 88 ball pythons and king cobras, 16 tegus, bearded dragons, and two spotted leopard geckos, with a combined weight exceeding 18 kilograms.

Komkrit Pinasai, head of the Wildlife Inspection Unit at Suvarnabhumi Airport, stated that smuggling wildlife through international postal services is not only serious legal violation but causes animal suffering and risks disease outbreaks. Officials have integrated screening measures with technology to prevent Thailand from becoming a transit hub for illegal wildlife trafficking.

Authorities seized all contraband and filed charges under the Wildlife Conservation Act B.E. 2562, Section 23 (exporting controlled wildlife without permission), the Customs Act B.E. 2560, Sections 242, 166, and 167, and the Animal Epidemic Act B.E. 2558, Section 31. Investigators from Suvarnabhumi Airport Police are gathering evidence and tracking the sender and associates for legal prosecution. All live animals have been transferred to the Wildlife Health Management Unit of the Department of National Parks for care.

On August 13, Democrat party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva commented on accusations that party MP Chaiyachon Detdecho, who oversees southern operations, assaulted a Thung Yai police station deputy during a funeral. Abhisit said the party is conducting a thorough review of the matter and has spoken preliminarily with Chaiyachon, but is requesting time to verify the facts before issuing further statements. Party secretary-general Chaiyut Banwattana said he is unaware of the details and circumstances since he has not yet spoken with Chaiyachon. He stated that with charges already filed, the case must proceed through the legal system, and the party will not interfere or intervene in any way. He added that while the party has internal procedures for reviewing matters that could damage its reputation, the current case has entered the judicial process and must be allowed to follow its course. "The party is not ignoring what has happened, but we must follow party regulations, such as establishing a fact-finding committee," Banwattana said. "However, since this case is now in the legal system, we must allow the process to proceed."
