Thailand Launches Two EU-Backed Higher Education Reform Projects
3 Aug Khaosod

Dr. Panth Permsakcdi revealed on August 3 that the Erasmus+ Programme has approved funding for two education cooperation projects: BRIDGE and BrighT. Both projects aim to create prototypes for reforming Thailand's higher education system that can be scaled nationwide in the future, rather than simply developing individual university curricula.

The two projects serve complementary roles. BRIDGE, led by Burapha University and funded with €694,302.81 over three years, focuses on producing highly skilled workforce by creating interdisciplinary curricula linking science, engineering, and management to develop "scientist leaders" capable of driving innovation and managing change. BrighT, headed by Mahidol University and receiving €883,556.83 over four years, aims to strengthen universities' role in advancing Thailand's Bio-Circular-Green Economy (BCG) model through management systems, curriculum development, and industry partnerships.

Dr. Panth emphasized that BRIDGE addresses a gap in Thai science and engineering education by moving beyond narrow specialization to develop leaders who work across disciplines, understand business, and create innovations with industry partners. BrighT establishes national governance mechanisms including a BCG Higher Education Council, develops BCG competency frameworks aligned with Europe's GreenComp standard, and creates five regional centers of excellence to strengthen provincial universities and reduce urban-rural inequality.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dujjai Chaiyawanitsiri, director of the National Blood Service under the Thai Red Cross Society, explained that August 12 is both Mother's Day and the birthday of Queen Sirikit, who has served as patron of the Thai Red Cross for 70 years since 1956. Under her royal patronage, the Thai Red Cross has advanced humanitarian work according to international Red Cross principles, bringing welfare to people and the nation. The Queen's consistent support for blood donation services, including her tradition of presenting commemorative pins to donors, has encouraged continuous and sustainable blood donations motivated by deep gratitude for her patronage. Ex-Lawyer Convicted of Fraud Gets 3-Year Sentence

A former lawyer disbarred in 2018 was convicted and sentenced to three years in prison for filing false lawsuits and making false statements in court to defraud clients of 3 million baht.

Ex-Lawyer Convicted of Fraud Gets 3-Year Sentence
3 Aug Khaosod

Benz Racing and his mother Helen, a former lawyer who allegedly defrauded clients of 3 million baht, have been arrested and sentenced to three years imprisonment without awaiting appeal finality. On August 3, 2026, the Criminal Court on Ratchdamri Road scheduled the reading of the Supreme Court's verdict in case number Aor. 3452/2562, filed by plaintiff Suparpen Vorojarajarajadet against former lawyer Siwawit Samredsophon on charges of filing false lawsuits and making false statements in court proceedings.

According to the plaintiff's complaint, on November 15, 2017, the defendant filed false charges against the plaintiff in criminal case Aor. 3534/2560, alleging obstruction of justice and defamation. The plaintiff claims the defendant falsely alleged she had unlawfully taken a service contract document. However, on October 6, 2017, the plaintiff presented the same contract as evidence in a civil case—evidence the plaintiff denies ever using falsely. The defendant, a lawyer at the time, was later disbarred by the Bar Association on February 8, 2018.

The trial court found the defendant guilty of multiple offenses: one year imprisonment for filing false charges and two years for making false statements in criminal proceedings, totaling three years. The Appeals Court reduced the sentence to eight months. When the Supreme Court scheduled the verdict reading on July 7, 2026, the defendant failed to appear, leading the court to issue an arrest warrant and forfeit bail.

On the date of this report, Muang Pathumthani police arrested the defendant and presented him to the court per the arrest warrant. The Supreme Court examined the case and found that the trial court had dismissed charges against the plaintiff's son regarding drug offenses, convicting the defendant only on money laundering charges. The court determined that because the plaintiff had removed the defendant from the legal profession and used documents in litigation until the suit was dismissed—documents the defendant never actually used—the defendant had legitimate grounds to demand the return of his service contract.

Buriram United Chief Defends Shorts Attire at Spirit Shrine

Buriram United chairman Newin Chidchob defended wearing shorts to a spirit shrine blessing ceremony, arguing that respect comes from the heart rather than clothing choices during the team's decade-long annual tradition.

Buriram United Chief Defends Shorts Attire at Spirit Shrine
3 Aug Khaosod

Newin Chidchob, chairman of Buriram United FC, has faced criticism for wearing shorts and a club jersey while paying respects at the Phao Chaturkham spirit shrine located at the City Pillar Shrine in Nakhon Si Thammarat. The images sparked heated debate across social media and business circles, with many viewing such attire as disrespectful for a sacred occasion.

In response, Chidchob posted a detailed explanation on his Facebook page, titled "Uncle Newin," emphasizing that respect, faith, and reverence stem from the heart. He noted that Buriram United has conducted this annual blessing ceremony for over ten years, bringing all players, coaches, and staff to seek blessings from Phao Chaturkham before the competition season. Chidchob considers the spirit a sacred object he worships and has worn around his neck for decades.

Every year, he leads the entire team and staff in the ceremony, bringing championship trophies won that season to be included in the ritual. This annual tradition serves as a reminder and commitment to honesty and dedication in professional football, with the ceremony consistently yielding trophies—a practice the club attributes to the spirit's blessings.

Chidchob clarified that the club independently organizes and funds the ceremony through coordination with the City Pillar Shrine office, not as a provincial government event. Over time, government officials and politicians have been invited as guests to join the ceremony, but the club remains the sole host. This year, the Deputy Prime Minister, the Provincial Governor, and several MPs attended as guests, not as co-hosts.

Regarding his personal attire, Chidchob stated it is a private choice. He has worn a Buriram United club jersey and shorts for over ten years during the ceremony, and shrine officials have never objected. He argued that clothing—whether long pants or shorts—cannot determine whether a person holds genuine respect or faith. His decade-long consistent practice demonstrates his sincere reverence for Phao Chaturkham, rooted in his heart rather than his wardrobe.

Chidchob concluded by acknowledging critics' right to their opinion while declining to engage in further debate, noting that such criticism would be irrelevant if he were not the event's host.

Thailand Orders Box Jellyfish Alert After Teen Dies

A 13-year-old boy died from box jellyfish poisoning at a Nakhon Si Thammarat beach, prompting authorities to issue alerts and intensify public education on jellyfish prevention and proper first-aid procedures including vinegar treatment.

Thailand Orders Box Jellyfish Alert After Teen Dies
3 Aug Khaosod

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin expressed condolences for the death of a 13-year-old boy from box jellyfish poisoning while swimming at Ban Fai Tha beach in Sichon district, Nakhon Si Thammarat on August 1, 2025. He ordered the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources to coordinate with relevant agencies to closely monitor the situation and intensify public awareness about jellyfish prevention and first aid to prevent recurring incidents and reduce potential harm.

Dr. Pinsak Suraswadi, director of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, stated that local agencies are coordinating with provincial health officials, local government organizations, and beach operators to continuously monitor conditions and alert the public and tourists, especially in high-risk areas. Water activities should be suspended if venomous jellyfish are spotted or authorities issue warnings, and people are urged not to touch jellyfish directly and to strictly follow official instructions.

Correct first-aid procedures include: immediately remove the victim from water to prevent drowning, have them lie still, and call emergency medical services at 1669. Pour vinegar continuously on the affected area for at least 30 seconds to inhibit toxin release, then use tweezers to remove any tentacle fragments. If the victim stops breathing or their heart stops, perform CPR immediately while awaiting hospital transport.

Using fresh water, plain water, alcohol, or rubbing, massaging, and scrubbing the wound is strictly prohibited as it triggers the stinging cells to release more toxin, which can be life-threatening. Vinegar inhibits the stinging cells' function but does not relieve pain. The Department has installed vinegar stations with first-aid instructions at public beaches in high-risk areas and educated tourism operators ahead of jellyfish season. The public can access situation updates and jellyfish information through the Marine Warning system at warning.dmcr.go.th and the Marine Warning mobile application.

A shocking incident unfolded when a man who had hitched a ride suddenly became agitated and lunged for the steering wheel while the vehicle was in motion, nearly causing a serious accident. At 2:45 p.m. on August 3, police Deputy Inspector Anusilp Khleakaratop of Phimai Station, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, received a report of a man acting erratically along the Phimai-Chakrachak road near the entrance to Ban Taan in Samroedrith Subdistrict, Phimai District. Officers from Phimai Station and rescue personnel from Sawang Metta Nakhon Ratchasima Foundation rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, they found three residents restraining a 58-year-old man named A (alias) from Chakrachak District, who was lying on the grass. The man appeared exhausted and remained still after neighbors had subdued him and locked his limbs. According to the driver's account, he was traveling with friends within Phimai District when the man asked for a ride. When they were roughly one kilometer away from Phimai town, the passenger suddenly became agitated and lunged for the steering wheel, forcing the driver to brake hard and pull over to the roadside. The driver and other neighbors then rushed to restrain the man and hold him on the ground, calling police immediately. Officers later determined that the man had a history of mental illness and was likely suffering from medication non-compliance, which had triggered the agitated episode. Relatives were to be notified, and rescue personnel transported the man to Phimai Hospital for medical evaluation and continued treatment.

Two Students Fall From Sixth-Floor School Building in Bangkok
3 Aug Khaosod

At 4:00 p.m. on August 3, 2025, Deputy Investigation Officer Phuritsada Phangsong of Sai Yai Police Station received a report that two students had fallen from a school building and sustained serious injuries. The incident occurred at a well-known school in the Sai Yai area, Bangkok. Police Captain Nathachapon Kiram, commander of Sai Yai Police Station, rushed to the scene with medical personnel and rescue teams from Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital, CGH Sai Yai Hospital, the Sai Yai Civil Defense Volunteers, and the Por Teck Tung Foundation.

At the front of the six-story school building, rescue workers found two injured students lying on the ground in critical condition with labored breathing. The male student was 15 years old and the female student was 16 years old; both were Grade 10 classmates wearing school uniforms. Rescue personnel immediately performed CPR and rushed the male student to CGH Sai Yai Hospital and the female student to Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital.

At the scene on the sixth-floor balcony where the incident occurred, officers found a pair of male and female school shoes neatly placed together and documented them as evidence. Witness investigation revealed that the two students were in a romantic relationship. During the period after classes ended, they walked together to the sixth-floor balcony, removed their shoes and placed them together, embraced, and then decided to jump. Fortunately, their bodies struck the branches of a large tree and an awning of the building before hitting the ground, which reduced the impact force somewhat. Though both remained alive, they sustained serious injuries.

Police initially suspect the cause may stem from personal relationship problems or academic stress. However, investigators from Sai Yai Police Station are continuing to interview homeroom teachers, instructors, close friends, and the parents of both students in detail to determine the true cause and motive for the incident.
