One Championship Backs Thai Boxer Nabil for 2028 Olympics

One Championship and Thai boxing authorities have backed fighter Nabil Anane to represent Thailand at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, with executives confident in his medal prospects given his physical advantages and dominance in the 65-70 k

One Championship Backs Thai Boxer Nabil for 2028 Olympics
4d ago Khaosod

On August 14, the Thai Olympic Committee, Thai Amateur Boxing Association, and One Championship jointly announced their support for boxer Nabil Anane to represent Thailand in amateur boxing at the 2028 Olympics in the United States.

Boss Chatri, whose full name is Chatri Sisodton, executive chairman of One Championship, explained the reasoning behind the decision. "When we consider whether an athlete should compete in amateur boxing, we look at two things: first, where their heart truly lies as a boxer, and second, whether they realistically have a chance to win a medal," he said. "If the medal prospects are slim, I would advise them that staying with One Championship offers better opportunities to become extraordinarily wealthy rather than wasting two or four years without achieving anything. Failing to win gold is not good for a boxer."

Chatri emphasized Nabil's dominance in his weight division. "I've assessed every boxer in the 65 and 70 kilogram classes—world champions, gold medalists, and even Thai fighters—to see if anyone can beat Nabil at this weight. If someone thinks they can defeat him, come forward now and take a 350,000 baht bonus."

He highlighted Nabil's physical advantages. "If you're fighting at 65 kilograms and face Nabil, who is 194 centimeters tall, who do you spar with? You can practice on a heavy bag set high, but for live sparring, where do you find a 194-centimeter partner? Nabil, by contrast, can spar against fighters who are 170 centimeters tall—left-handed boxers, right-handed boxers, and more. He's also developed tighter defense because he trained in small gloves, unlike fighters accustomed to larger gloves. So whoever can beat Nabil in the 65-kilogram division gets the bonus."

Thailand Confident in Managing U.S.-Iran Tensions Impact

Thailand's state price controls on fuel and living expenses have kept inflation modest at 1.08% despite U.S.-Iran tensions threatening global energy supplies, according to the Commerce Ministry's trade policy director.

Thailand Confident in Managing U.S.-Iran Tensions Impact
4d ago Khaosod

On August 14, Nanthapon Jiralertpongsakul, director of the Office of Trade and Investment Policy Assessment under the Commerce Ministry, said the escalating U.S.-Iran tensions must be closely monitored. A prolonged conflict risks disrupting global energy supplies and triggering inflation across many nations. However, Thailand has managed pressure from rising energy costs through state price controls on fuel and living expenses, keeping first-half inflation modest at 1.08% and within the 1–3% target range.

Tensions flared anew when U.S. President Donald Trump announced on July 8 that a U.S.-Iran ceasefire agreement signed on June 17 had ended. After both sides launched military strikes in the Middle East, crude oil prices rose sharply, raising global concerns that prolonged conflict could spark renewed inflation worldwide. Since early this year, the first round of clashes has already pushed oil prices and inflation higher across multiple countries.

Inflation impact varies by nation depending on energy dependence and policy. The Philippines imports over 90% of its oil from the Middle East and faces high fuel costs as its peso weakens. Malaysia, a net energy exporter, subsidizes retail fuel prices from oil revenues, limiting inflation pressure. Thailand faced clear upstream cost increases in the second quarter, with producer prices up 8.2% year-on-year and freight costs up 11.1%. However, state energy price controls prevented sharp retail fuel swings, keeping second-quarter inflation at 2.70% year-on-year and overall first-half inflation at just 1.08%.

Director Nanthapon assessed that although Middle East tensions remain uncertain and could push global energy prices higher, Thailand's effective energy and cost-of-living price controls—reflected in first-half inflation staying within the 1–3% target—position the country to absorb further volatility without severe impact on citizens' welfare.

Thailand's Investment Inflow Hits 255 Billion Baht in Q2
4d ago Khaosod

The Board of Investment announced that actual investment in the second quarter of 2026 reached 255 billion baht, up 31% from the same period last year, bringing the first half total to 535.8 billion baht. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas, as chairman of the investment promotion committee, has prioritized systematic quarterly tracking of actual investment disbursements to demonstrate how promoted projects contribute to the real economy and overall economic growth, while accelerating resolution of project obstacles.

Artificial intelligence-related industries led investment in the quarter, including optical signal transmission devices, printed circuit boards, and data storage equipment, accounting for over 127 billion baht—roughly half of all Q2 investment—more than double the previous year. Energy and basic utilities, particularly renewable power generation, attracted 23 billion baht (up 18%), followed by agriculture and food processing at 22.3 billion baht (up 6%), minerals and materials at 21 billion baht, and automotive and parts at 18.2 billion baht (up 15%).

The Board plans to intensify investment monitoring and accelerate project implementation through the Thailand FastPass mechanism while coordinating with related agencies to unlock obstacles. The goal is to ensure promoted projects deliver concrete benefits to supply chains, employment, exports, and overall economic growth.

Two residents of Ban Pin village in Chiang Muang District, Phayao province, have been found safe after spending seven days lost and unreachable in dense forest. The missing men were identified as Nak Kamlue, 74, and Rames Chandan, 20. Search teams and community members launched a coordinated effort to locate them, and early this morning rescue officials radioed the command center with the good news that both men had been found in good condition.

When news of the discovery reached the search command center, relatives and family members waiting there were overwhelmed with emotion, many embracing each other tightly and crying with relief after a week of worry and uncertainty. Officials reported that both men remain safe and are being transported out of the forest for medical evaluation and initial first aid from health workers and doctors.

The discovery marks a success for the multi-agency rescue effort and community volunteers who worked continuously over the seven-day period despite challenging forest terrain and difficult access conditions. Further details about the location where they were found, the condition of both men, and the rescue route are expected to be released by the Chiang Muang Subdistrict Administrative Organization.

Democrat Party Will Not Shield Member If Assault Was Intentional

The Democrat Party says it will not shield MP Chai Chaya Detchadecho from discipline if he intentionally assaulted a police deputy in Nakhon Si Thammarat, though conflicting accounts from all three parties complicate the case.

Democrat Party Will Not Shield Member If Assault Was Intentional
4d ago Khaosod

At a Democrat Party meeting on August 14, party spokesman Pongsagorn Khuanmuang addressed the case of Chai Chaya Detchadecho, a party list MP and deputy southern regional head, who faces assault charges filed by a deputy commander of Thung Yai Police Station in Nakhon Si Thammarat. The party confirmed it will proceed while upholding police dignity and principles.

Pongsagorn noted that three parties involved have given conflicting accounts. The deputy commander filed the complaint four days after the incident without providing a prior statement, citing assault under Section 391 of the criminal code despite claiming no injuries were sustained. The police chief also gave varying statements across several interviews—first denying the incident occurred, then confirming it as a joke, then calling it intentional assault.

In contrast, Chai Chaya appeared before investigators and denied intentional harm. Pongsagorn highlighted that both the deputy commander and Chai Chaya later agreed the incident was merely joking around, and the deputy commander attended a funeral with Chai Chaya the next day, even posing for photos together. The core issue is whether Chai Chaya acted with intent to harm, not whether injuries occurred. The party appealed to the public to submit video evidence to clarify the facts, and pledged that if intent to assault is proven, it will take action against Chai Chaya including party discipline and ethics review.

Israeli Family Barred From Koh Samui Zoo Over Nationality

An Israeli family was denied entry to Samui Exotic Park in Mae Nam on August 14, citing their nationality, sparking a confrontation caught on video that escalated into physical altercation with staff.

Israeli Family Barred From Koh Samui Zoo Over Nationality
4d ago Khaosod

An Israeli family accompanied by two young daughters visited Samui Exotic Park in Mae Nam on August 14, 2026, but say they were turned away because of their nationality. Video footage recorded by the mother shows her confronting staff, asking "Because we're from Israel? What have you done to you? We haven't done anything," before a man representing the zoo orders them to leave, uses profanity, and appears to headbutt the husband while throwing a small sign in the woman's direction.

The park released its own CCTV footage of the confrontation and later posted Instagram Stories that appeared to reinforce its stance, including a video showing an Israeli flag marked with a red no-entry symbol next to a shooting target, alongside a Free Palestine flag. While the park previously faced backlash for displaying Palestinian flags and "Free Palestine" signage, it claimed at the time that it welcomed visitors of all nationalities but expected guests to respect its rules.

Democrats Threaten Legal Action Against Election Commission Over Senate Case

Democrats threaten to prosecute Thailand's Election Commission if it fails to refer a contested Senate seat case to the Supreme Court, citing potential manipulation and illegal party control.

Democrats Threaten Legal Action Against Election Commission Over Senate Case
4d ago Khaosod

On August 14, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., Democratic Party spokesman Pongsak Khuanchueang announced that the party had established a legal team to track the Election Commission's consideration of a contested Senate seat case and whether it would refer the matter to the Supreme Court. If the commission fails to send the case to court, the party will file complaints to prosecute both the commission for criminal offenses and corruption.

Pongsak stated that the party is also investigating whether any political party, politician, or organized group was involved in manipulating or trading Senate selections, conduct that would violate the law. The party is also scrutinizing the Department of Special Investigation's recent apparent shift in its commitment to the Senate case, noting that the DSI is waiting for the Election Commission to conclude its review first, despite having the legal authority to act independently. Previously, the DSI had filed charges against eight people involved in the case.

The party is preparing a complaint to prosecute political parties involved in unlawful acquisition of Senate seats. Under law, Senate members are intended to have independence and their own judgment to fulfill a screening and advisory role to society; any party control or coercion is a clear violation.

Pongsak emphasized that there are allegations the Election Commission has been compromised if it fails to prosecute despite evidence presented jointly by the People's Party and Democratic Party, involving both parties and politicians at national and local levels. The party outlined three actions: filing a complaint for both criminal and corruption charges if the commission refuses to prosecute; pursuing charges against involved political parties if evidence emerges; and investigating financial trails. A parliamentary anti-money laundering committee, chaired by Democrat lawmaker Pithak Deach Detchadet from Nakhon Si Thammarat, found that the Office of the Anti-Money Laundering Authority must wait for the National Anti-Corruption Commission to forward the matter before proceeding. Pongsak expressed confidence that if pursued, the financial trail will be traced, as the People's Party has disclosed information and leads that state agencies have not seriously investigated regarding the money trail.

Jessica Bang, an 18-year-old Australian golfer and rising star, has died in Thailand from a brain hemorrhage while traveling to compete in the KLPGA Tour tournament. Jessica lost consciousness on August 1 while traveling to Bangkok for the KLPGA international qualifying competition. The young professional was rushed to Samitivej Hospital for emergency brain surgery and placed on a ventilator. Her family later confirmed her death on August 13. "We are deeply saddened by this news," the family said. "However, we want to remember Jessica and celebrate her success, love, and dedication to golf." Australian media outlet News.com.au reported that she died from severe brain hemorrhage. Jessica, nicknamed "Rocky Bang" by golf fans, was born in South Korea and recently became an Australian citizen. She turned professional in November 2025 after outstanding youth and amateur results, qualifying for the WPGA Tour of Australia. She competed in just five tournaments before winning the Ford Women's NSW Open Regional Qualifying Event at Moss Vale Golf Club in February 2026 with a final-round score of 8-under-par 65, a course record, winning by 13-under-par overall and five strokes ahead of her nearest competitor. Her mother served as her caddy during that tournament. "I am so happy I cannot even speak," Jessica told Golf Australia magazine after her victory. "It still doesn't feel real. I never expected this. Such a big surprise."
