Former Phichit Chief Sentenced to 12 Years for Embezzling Donations

Former Phichit provincial chief Wirat has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for embezzling 3 million baht in donations meant for a Buddhist college, with the court ordering him to repay the funds.

4h ago Khaosod

A court has sentenced the former provincial chief of Phichit to 12 years in prison for embezzling 3 million baht in donations intended for Mahachulalongkorn Rajabhat University's Phichit Buddhist College, and ordered him to repay the institution. The case also revealed connections to a group nicknamed "golf residue."

On June 29, the Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct read its verdict in case number 195/2568, imposing a 12-year prison sentence on Wirat (formerly Luangpho Thepvachrasit), the former Phichit provincial chief and former abbot of Wat Thaluan, a royal temple.

The prosecution charged him with misappropriating educational funds. According to court findings, while serving as Phichit's provincial chief and overseeing Mahachulalongkorn Rajabhat University's Phichit Buddhist College, Wirat received a 3 million baht donation intended for the institution's development. The funds were transferred to his personal bank account, but he refused to deposit them into the university's accounts. Investigators discovered he collaborated with outsiders, specifically a group led by Ms. Wilawal, also known as "golf residue," to embezzle the money for personal use.

His actions violated Criminal Code sections 147 (public official embezzlement through corruption) and 157 (public official dereliction of duty). Throughout the investigation and trial, the court denied bail, keeping him in custody continuously.

The court found him guilty as charged and sentenced him to 12 years imprisonment, while ordering him to repay 3 million baht to the college.

Mexico Imposes Five-Year Tariff on Thai Canned Pineapple

Mexico imposed a five-year tariff on Thai canned pineapple starting June 20, 2026, charging $0.93 per kilogram after finding imports from Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines were undercutting domestic prices by up to 40%.

4h ago Khaosod

Mexico has announced retaliatory tariffs on canned pineapple imported from Thailand, effective from June 20, 2026 to June 20, 2031 for a five-year period. The Commerce Ministry reported that Mexico's Economy Ministry announced its final investigation results on June 19, 2026, concluding that canned pineapple imports from Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines have caused damage to Mexico's domestic industry. The investigation found that definitive countervailing duties would be imposed on canned pineapple from all three countries as follows: Thailand at $0.93 per kilogram, the Philippines at $0.94 per kilogram, and Indonesia at $0.99 per kilogram for PT Great imports and $1.02 per kilogram for other exporters. The tariffs take effect from June 20, 2026 through June 20, 2031. The investigation found that imported pineapple prices from these three countries averaged 40% below domestic producer prices and 23% below other import sources. This dumping behavior caused significant damage to the domestic industry, with total production falling 21%, domestic sales declining 2%, market share dropping 12.9%, and employment decreasing 5%. In the first four months of 2026, Mexico imported canned pineapple worth $19.48 million, a 136% increase, with imports from Thailand alone reaching $4.76 million, up 43.86%.

Belgium Edges Senegal In World Cup Drama After Late Collapse

Belgium fought back from 2-0 down to beat Senegal 3-2 in extra time at the 2026 World Cup, advancing to the round of 16 after Senegal's defensive collapse in the second half.

5h ago Khaosod

Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia said Senegal made a critical error by retreating defensively after leading 2-0, allowing a team of Belgium's caliber to break through their defense. Senegal coach Aliou Cissé declined to criticize the penalty conceded but admitted his team squandered their advantage.

In the 2026 World Cup round-of-32 match, Belgium narrowly defeated Senegal 3-2 in extra time (2-2 after 90 minutes) to advance to the round of 16, where they will face the winner of the USA-Bosnia match on July 6.

Senegal scored first through Abib Diarra in the 25th minute and Ismaila Sarr in the 51st minute. Belgium equalized with goals from Romelu Lukaku in the 86th minute and Yuri Tielemans in the 89th minute. Belgium earned a penalty during injury time in extra time, which Tielemans converted in the 120+5th minute.

Garcia said: "When they led 2-0, we knew they would do everything to defend. I think that was a serious mistake, and it's a lesson for me not to do that. As you saw, once we pulled it back to 1-2, the game changed, and we knew a team like this would break their system."

Cissé said: "We must congratulate the team that gave everything. We couldn't maintain our advantage from a 2-0 lead. As for the penalty we conceded, everyone can have their opinion, but I don't want to comment on that."

5h ago Khaosod

On July 2, 2569, rescue workers in Plauk Daeng district, Rayong province, responded to a request for help from relatives of a depressed woman who had driven away from her residence in Si Racha, Chachoengsao, heading toward Plauk Daeng without a clear destination. Soon after, the family received a message from an unknown woman reporting that she had seen the missing woman driving into a remote forest in Moo 7, Mab Yang Prom subdistrict, Plauk Daeng, Rayong. The woman provided GPS coordinates of the vehicle's location. The family immediately alerted rescue officials, who rushed to the coordinates and discovered the car parked deep in a dark, isolated forest far from any residential areas.

Inside the car, rescue workers found the woman alone and preparing to harm herself. They quickly intervened, safely removed her from the vehicle, and transported her to Plauk Daeng Hospital for immediate medical care.

The incident has sparked intense discussion on social media, with many people questioning and puzzling over the identity of the mysterious woman who reported the sighting and provided the GPS coordinates. Sompet Holds Prices Firm Despite Rising Costs

Sompet will hold prices steady despite rising production costs, instead trimming promotional spending to maintain margins and protect consumers in Thailand's competitive 25-billion-baht laundry market.

5h ago Khaosod

Sompet has no plans to raise product prices despite increased production costs, aiming to protect consumers. Deputy Managing Director Ms. Chailada Tantiwechakul of Sompet Pibul Company Limited stated that the company will maintain its current pricing structure as long as possible while slightly reducing promotional budgets to sustain operations.

"Business operators currently face challenges from rising costs across all areas—raw materials, production, and transportation—particularly from oil prices that directly impact shipping expenses," she said. "Although costs have increased, we maintain the same selling price by reducing operational expenses to preserve our profit margins."

Thanasakdi Praorapawom, Product Manager for Laundry Products at Lion (Thailand) Company Limited, a Sompet subsidiary, noted that production costs are under pressure from global economic volatility and oil price fluctuations, which are critical raw materials for the laundry product industry. However, the company focuses on efficient cost management by improving factory operations to boost production efficiency, refusing to pass costs onto consumers.

The company upholds its 50-year-old brand foundation of quality, honesty, and fair pricing. The Thai laundry product market is highly competitive with a market value of 25 billion baht, but the company maintains approximately 10% market share. "Despite intense competition from domestic and foreign players and production cost pressures from oil price volatility, we drive business growth through innovation that differentiates us from price-based competition," he added.

Thai Rice Exports Poised To Exceed 7.2 Million Tons

Thai rice exports are forecast to exceed 7.2 million tons this year as major importers Philippines and Malaysia shift purchases from India to Thailand due to concerns about aged Indian stocks and El Niño risks.

5h ago Khaosod

The Thai Rice Exporters Association anticipates Philippines and Malaysia will increase purchases of Thai rice for stockpiling, supporting forecasts of over 7.2 million tons in exports worth 140 billion baht total. Chukit Opasawong, honorary chairman of the Thai Rice Exporters Association, outlined this year's export outlook, noting that unexpected positive factors are now supporting stronger growth than previously predicted. Key importers Philippines and Malaysia have announced they will not buy rice from India, the world's largest producer and Thailand's principal competitor, because Indian rice stocks are aged and unsuitable for maintaining strategic reserves to buffer against potential El Niño-related production declines globally. "This creates an opportunity for Thailand, which has fresh seasonal rice coming to market at just the right time," Opasawong said. "These favorable conditions should drive Thai rice exports in June-July 2025 to spike dramatically, averaging no less than 800,000 tons monthly—well above the first-half average of just 500,000 tons." Exporters had previously worried about oversupply from Indian production and weak demand due to Thailand's higher prices, along with El Niño risks to domestic output. But circumstances have shifted in Thailand's favor as Philippines and Malaysia may now turn to Thai suppliers instead, despite Thai white rice 5% being roughly $100 per ton costlier than Indian rice. Opasawong projected that with these positive factors, Thailand will exceed its export target this year, with volumes potentially rising to 7.2 million tons from the original target of 7 million tons, generating 140 billion baht in total export value—a satisfactory outcome despite falling short of last year's 7.9 million tons. Thai rice exports during the first five months reached nearly 3 million tons, a respectable figure but representing a 5% decline compared to the previous year. Second-half export trends are expected to improve over the first half, though the impact of El Niño must be monitored closely.
