Swedish Tourist Scammed, Abandoned by Thai Woman in Chiang Mai
A Swedish tourist in Chiang Mai was scammed and abandoned by a Thai karaoke bar worker who drained his savings after months of dating, leaving him destitute and in psychological distress.
On July 10, Chiang Mai police responded to reports of a disoriented foreign tourist behaving oddly near the Chiang Mai Red Cross headquarters behind Yuphraj School. Officers found the man attempting to resuscitate a sick pigeon by blowing into its rectum, causing traffic disruptions. Officers calmed him and moved him to the side of the road.
Investigation revealed the man was a 40-year-old Swedish national who had been staying at a guesthouse in Chiang Mai for over a month. He had become involved with a Thai karaoke bar worker in the area and the couple began dating. He would frequently return to Sweden and come back to Chiang Mai, where the woman would greet him warmly. Neighbors believed they were a serious couple.
However, the man later discovered he had been deceived. When he initially met the woman, he was financially well-off, but she eventually scammed him and drained all his money before fleeing. The incident has left him both heartbroken and financially ruined, triggering his current erratic mental state.
