Thai Airways Tackles Suvarnabhumi Cargo Bottleneck
Thai Airways is clearing a cargo backlog at Suvarnabhumi Airport caused by surging inbound volumes. The carrier added staff, forklifts, temporary storage, and a new warehouse management system.
Thai Airways International is urgently addressing a bottleneck in inbound cargo warehouse services at Suvarnabhumi Airport.
The company clarified the delay in inbound cargo warehouse services at Suvarnabhumi Airport, which stems from continuously increasing inbound air cargo volumes. This has resulted in a large number of unit load devices (ULDs) waiting to enter the cargo breakdown and storage process, affecting delivery times for some shipments.
The company acknowledges the impact on customers, partner airlines, and related operators, and apologizes for the inconvenience and delays. It has mobilized necessary personnel, equipment, and resources to accelerate clearance of the backlogged cargo and return to normal operations as soon as possible. It is also coordinating with Airports of Thailand (AOT) and relevant agencies to resolve the situation and systematically improve cargo warehouse management efficiency. Key measures include:
1. Accelerating clearance of backlogged cargo and increasing operational capacity – The company has added support staff and secured additional forklifts to speed up cargo breakdown, storage, and delivery, while prioritizing deliveries.
2. Allocating additional space for cargo – The company is coordinating with AOT to allocate extra temporary cargo space to increase storage capacity and reduce congestion within the warehouse, while also considering additional space management approaches under relevant safety regulations.
3. Improving cargo management and tracking processes – The company will implement a warehouse management system covering all warehouse operations from cargo receipt, breakdown, and storage location assignment through to delivery. It will also establish continuous tracking and reporting of inbound/outbound cargo volumes and backlogs to enable real-time situation assessment, manpower and equipment planning, and operational adjustments.
4. Integrating cooperation and enhancing operational efficiency – The company is closely coordinating with AOT to jointly promote awareness and encourage operators to use the AOT Cargo Clearhouse system for faster cargo release.
The company confirms these measures cover both immediate problem-solving and long-term warehouse management system development, aiming to boost operational efficiency, cargo handling capacity, and service quality to build confidence among customers, partner airlines, and operators. The company remains committed to continuously improving operational procedures and resolving issues, while developing services in all aspects with customer convenience and benefit as the top priority.
