Thai BMX Rider Phuttapumi Earns 42 Points Toward 2028 Olympics
Thai BMX rider Phuttapumi Nakpan earned 42 Olympic qualification points at the UCI BMX World Cup in China, helping Thailand reach 339 points and 22nd place in the standings for the 2028 Los Angeles Games. General Decha Mekrasri noted that Asian riders still trail European competitors, with Phuttapumi being the sole Asian to reach the quarterfinals in the under‑23 class. The Thai Cycling Association plans to use the results to strengthen its development program ahead of the 2027 SEA Games and the Olympic qualification window.
General Decha Mekrasri said that after the four rounds, Thailand’s BMX national team had accumulated 42 Olympic qualification points, thanks to Phuttapumi Nakpan’s 24th‑place finish in round 7 and 26th‑place in round 8 in the men’s under‑23 category, where he reached the quarterfinals at both Chongli events. Sergeant Komet Sukprasert competed in the elite men’s category but failed to score any points in any of the four rounds. As a result, Thailand now holds a total of 339 points and sits 22nd in the Olympic qualification standings.
He added that the level of Asian riders still lags far behind Europe, noting that in round 8 of the elite men’s race Swiss riders took the top four spots, followed by three French riders, while only a single Japanese rider made it to the second round. In the under‑23 category, Phuttapumi was the sole Asian to reach the quarterfinals, the best performance by any Asian rider.
General Decha also said that, besides gaining points, the team gathered valuable data on rival Asian nations, especially Japan and emerging Chinese riders, to help shape Thailand’s future development program. The Cycling Association of Thailand will convene technical and sport‑science experts to map out a plan aligned with the national cycling development strategy, aiming first at the 34th SEA Games in Malaysia in 2027 and then at securing Olympic qualification for 2028. The crucial period for earning points will run from 2027 through mid‑2028, with road cycling points closing in October 2027, track cycling in April 2028, and mountain bike and BMX points ending in May and June 2028 respectively.
