Thai Chamber Sees US Midterms Supporting Trade Balance, Energy Prices
The Thai Chamber of Commerce welcomed the Democratic Party's US midterm election victory, saying it could bring greater legislative oversight to trade and foreign policy. Chairman Pajon Aramwattanaphan noted the results may help balance global trade rules and ease energy prices if Middle East tensions decline, benefiting Thailand's export-dependent economy. The Chamber urged Thai businesses to monitor US policy shifts closely while seeking deeper cooperation with American partners.
The Thai Chamber of Commerce congratulated the Democratic Party on its victory in the US midterm elections, noting the party gained majorities in both the House and Senate, reflecting the will of American voters. This is a globally significant development given the US role in the economy, trade, investment, and international security. The election creates a balance between executive and legislative powers, increasing checks and balances on key policies across economics, budgets, and foreign relations. However, President Donald Trump retains executive authority within the legal framework, so it remains to be seen how much this change will shift policy directions or foster compromise between the two parties.
On global trade, the Chamber believes the election may influence US trade policy, particularly import tariffs, trade barriers, and global supply chain restructuring. Although the legislature will have greater oversight, trade measures may not ease immediately because economic and technological competition between major powers and domestic industry promotion remain priorities for both parties.
Meanwhile, energy prices could see positive signals if political changes lead to diplomatic efforts to reduce Middle East tensions, especially conflicts involving Iran, potentially easing pressure on global oil prices. Sustained de-escalation would benefit Thailand by lowering production costs, transportation expenses, inflation, and boosting consumer purchasing power. However, US stance and geopolitical developments must be closely monitored.
For Thailand, the US is a key export market and strategic partner. The Thai private sector must track trade policy developments, including tariffs, rules of origin, and trade remedy investigations, while using this opportunity to build understanding and expand cooperation with all US sectors to preserve mutual economic interests, especially for SMEs vulnerable to cost and export market volatility.
"The Thai Chamber believes the most important thing is for the global economy to regain stability, with clear, fair, and predictable trade rules, plus reduced international conflicts, as these factors affect confidence, investment decisions, and global competitiveness," Pajon said.
The Thai Chamber stands ready to continuously promote Thai-US economic relations with the executive branch, legislature, and US private sector networks to expand trade, investment, and cooperation in future industries, while pushing to upgrade Thai entrepreneurs' competitiveness under the 'Reinvent Thailand' strategy to ensure Thailand adapts sustainably to global economic changes.
