US Retiree Opens Koh Samui Café After Boredom Strikes
American retiree Michael Ken opened Izzy's Coffee on Koh Samui after boredom struck during his island retirement, finding renewed purpose running the café with his partner.
On November 5, 2026, the story of Michael Ken, a 54-year-old American, emerged. He decided to retire on Koh Samui in Surat Thani province after a trip a decade earlier left him enamored with the island, extending a planned two-week stay into three months. Ken had worked in various fields including restaurant business, software, construction, real estate, and marketing. In 2020, he moved to Koh Samui, buying a two-bedroom apartment for $186,100 (about 6.2 million baht) and obtaining a long-stay visa. The first year and a half of retirement went as dreamed: Ken spent his time walking on beaches, getting massages, and enjoying a work-free life. However, as time passed, he began to feel bored because he could not sustain the same leisure activities every day. His girlfriend at the time started selling banana cake on the island, and Ken suggested renting a small space to turn it into a business. He also noticed a lack of good-tasting coffee shops on the island. Together they decided to open Izzy's Coffee, named after their dog, investing about 100,000 baht to build the shop and another 400,000 baht for equipment and decor. Today, Ken and his current partner, Yam, co-manage the business, with Ken developing the drink menu and serving customers daily. He revealed that running the café restored a sense of purpose that was missing after retirement. Although he acknowledges that living in Thailand is not always convenient or cheap, and legal residency presents challenges, he is happy with the life he has built on Koh Samui. Over the past six years, he has returned to the US only once for a funeral. While he has no plans to expand or franchise, he continues to seek new goals and is unsure what his next venture might be. Also mentioned: a Singaporean who chose to live in Thailand commuting weekly for work because it's cheaper, and a British couple who sold all their assets to move to Thailand permanently, reporting a greatly improved quality of life.
