Thai Opposition Condemns Myanmar Military Leader's State Visit
6 Aug Khaosod

On August 6, 2025, at Parliament, Bangkok MP Anusorn Thamjai of the Pheu Thai Party and Sirachat Treewisalwaedt of the ASEAN Democracy Network working group announced their opposition to Senior General Min Aung Hlaing's official state visit as a government guest. Anusorn called on Parliament and the government to issue a statement reaffirming Thailand's commitment to human rights and international law while condemning violence, persecution of dissidents, and human rights abuses in Myanmar.

The lawmakers requested the government reconsider or suspend future state-level invitations to Min Aung Hlaing to avoid legitimizing the Myanmar military junta, which faces criticism for human rights violations, border attacks, and refugee crises. They proposed establishing a joint commission involving Parliament, the Thai government, ethnic armed organizations, civil society, and human rights groups to advance humanitarian assistance and fair negotiations.

Additionally, they urged Thailand to present Myanmar with a timeline of demands addressing drug trafficking, border conflicts, online scams, human trafficking, transboundary pollution, and cross-border haze, while calling for Thai access to border areas for concrete solutions. The lawmakers also proposed creating a special diplomatic task force to engage ethnic armed groups and establish an ASEAN democracy network to promote peace, human rights, environmental protection, and development across the region.

Sirachat argued that the government's embrace of the Myanmar military leader reflects an alignment with authoritarianism and damages Thailand's democratic credentials. According to Justice For Myanmar reports, Thailand serves as a financial and arms conduit for the Myanmar junta while facilitating money laundering through real estate. The lawmakers warned that continued ties with Myanmar's military could harm Thailand's credibility and OECD membership aspirations, which emphasize rule of law, democracy, and human rights.

Thailand Launches Data Center Policy Board
6 Aug Khaosod

The Cabinet has approved the establishment of a Data Center Business Policy Committee, as announced by the government office on August 5th, to set investment direction and integrate oversight of the country's data center sector. The move aims to accommodate rising investment and advance Thailand's digital infrastructure development.

The committee will be chaired by a Deputy Prime Minister appointed by the Prime Minister, with vice-chairs from the ministries of Digital Economy and Society, Interior, and Energy, alongside secretaries and officials from relevant agencies—over 21 members in total. The Secretary-General of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) serves as a committee member and secretary.

The committee's primary duties include proposing data center policies and standards to the Cabinet, monitoring and assessing investment impacts, appointing subcommittees, and implementing tasks assigned by the Cabinet or Prime Minister. When evaluating data center projects, the board will apply four critical dimensions: (1) economic benefits to the country, (2) clean energy use, energy security, and appropriate energy pricing, (3) efficient resource allocation covering electricity, water, urban planning, safety, and environmental protection aligned with carbon-neutrality goals, and (4) safeguarding national data sovereignty and security.

Government agencies may submit obstacles they encounter to the committee for review and remedial recommendations to the Cabinet. Once Cabinet approval is obtained, relevant agencies must implement the decisions and report results to the committee every three months, ensuring Thailand's data center policy advances effectively and sustainably.

Thailand Launches New Worker Assistance Fund Starting October 1
6 Aug Khaosod

The Department of Labour Protection and Welfare (DLPW) has urged employers and employees to prepare for a new worker assistance fund launching on October 1, 2026. DLPW Director-General Sarojin Kumkhai announced that the new fund is designed to provide financial security for workers and strengthen their position when employment ends or they become unemployed. The fund emphasizes joint savings between employers and employees and targets businesses with at least 10 workers that do not currently have a pension fund. Collection of contributions will begin nationwide on October 1, 2026.

Contribution rates are set at 0.25 percent of wages per party from October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2031, then increase to 0.50 percent per party from October 1, 2031 onward. When workers leave their jobs, they will receive their accumulated savings, employer contributions, and accrued interest as a lump sum within 25 days to help ease financial hardship during job transitions. Employers can register through the DLPW e-Service system, while workers should review the fund's rules and eligibility conditions to maximize their benefits.

Stepfather Arrested for Abusing 3-Year-Old Stepchild

A 30-year-old stepfather was arrested in Bangkok after authorities discovered his 3-year-old stepson had extensive bruises and cuts, including genital injuries, allegedly inflicted during ongoing abuse. The child has been hospitalized while

Stepfather Arrested for Abusing 3-Year-Old Stepchild
6 Aug Khaosod

On August 6, 2025, Foundation for One Child coordinated with Deputy Commander Piyarutt Wessagosol and other officers from Bangkok's child protection unit to conduct an intervention at a three-story townhouse in Lak Si district after receiving complaints that a 3-year-old boy was being physically abused by his stepfather on an ongoing basis. At the scene, authorities met the stepfather, 30, and the child's mother, also 30. Medical inspection revealed the child had bruises and contusions throughout his body, with sharp-object cuts particularly evident on his genitals. Officers immediately transferred the child to a hospital for treatment.

The Foundation for One Child reported that a concerned citizen had alerted them to the daily abuse inflicted by the drug-addicted stepfather, with injuries the child's preschool teacher had previously witnessed. The child had been sent to stay with his grandmother in another province for two months, but the mother brought him back. The foundation also noted drug use was occurring in the home. The child had previously suffered a broken arm from beatings, which the mother claimed was a fall, despite protecting the stepfather. The foundation planned the intervention because they feared the child's condition would deteriorate further, coordinating with Deputy Commander Piyarutt for official assistance.

The stepfather stated he had been released from prison twice on theft charges and had completed his sentence eight months prior. He currently works as a car washer and admitted to using methamphetamine and ice daily. He acknowledged occasional arguments with his wife but denied ever abusing the child, claiming the bruises and cuts resulted from the child falling and playing recklessly with a knife. He said he did not take the child to a doctor out of fear of being misunderstood as the abuser.

The child's mother subsequently admitted that all of the child's injuries were inflicted by the stepfather. Authorities initially questioned both the stepfather and mother while awaiting medical findings, after which the case will be referred to Thung Song Hong Police Station for formal charges and legal proceedings.

Doctor Debunks 'Widow Ghost' Myth Behind Sudden Deaths

A doctor in Northeast Thailand explains that sudden nocturnal deaths traditionally blamed on "widow ghosts" are actually caused by Brugada syndrome, a genetic heart condition affecting the heart's electrical system rather than supernatural

Doctor Debunks 'Widow Ghost' Myth Behind Sudden Deaths
6 Aug Khaosod

Dr. Jetsadej Boonvongvorachit, deputy director of Maha Sarakham Hospital, posted educational information about sudden nocturnal death syndrome (SUNDS) on his social media page. Traditionally, when a young man in a Northeast Thai village died suddenly at night despite appearing healthy during the day, locals attributed it to the "widow ghost" or "widow disease," leading some families to hang women's clothing outside their homes or perform protective rituals. However, medical science now recognizes this phenomenon as Brugada syndrome, a disorder of the heart's electrical system rather than anything supernatural.

Brugada syndrome presents a diagnostic challenge because the heart's structure, muscle, and coronary arteries may appear completely normal during autopsy. The problem lies in the electrical control system governing the heartbeat. In affected individuals, sodium channels regulating electrical charge in heart cells malfunction, causing the lower heart chambers to beat rapidly and ineffectively—a condition called ventricular fibrillation. When this occurs, the heart cannot pump blood to the brain; the person loses consciousness, stops breathing, and can die within minutes without immediate CPR or defibrillation.

Research on Thai men who survived unexplained cardiac arrest found that ventricular fibrillation typically occurs at night during sleep, with electrical patterns consistent with Brugada syndrome in many cases. Studies of SUNDS deaths in Thailand show victims were predominantly males aged 20–49, many from the Northeast, with most deaths occurring between midnight and 6 a.m., peaking around 2 a.m.

This prevalence in Northeast populations reflects underlying genetic factors more common in Thai-Lao and Southeast Asian populations rather than lifestyle choices. Brugada syndrome can remain silent from birth until certain triggers cause severe electrical dysfunction. Regarding the theory that sticky rice consumption causes SUNDS, Dr. Jetsadej emphasizes that current evidence does not support this claim. He advises anyone with a family history of sudden death to consult a physician, as genetic screening and cardiac monitoring can identify at-risk individuals.

Mae Hong Son Local Governments Urge Premier to Address Forest Zone Infrastructure Crisis

Mae Hong Son officials asked Thailand's Prime Minister to relax forest protection laws blocking 6,743 infrastructure projects in the northern province, where 98% of territory is protected forest reserve and villages lack basic roads, electr

Mae Hong Son Local Governments Urge Premier to Address Forest Zone Infrastructure Crisis
6 Aug Khaosod

Officials from Mae Hong Son's local government organizations submitted letters to Thailand's Prime Minister and relevant cabinet ministers on August 6, 2025, during a national seminar on local administration crisis management held in Pattaya. Pongphipat Meebenchamaas, chief administrator of Mae Sam Laeb Subdistrict Organization in Sob Moei District, Mae Hong Son, explained that the delegation raised three major issues. First, they requested that the cabinet relax forest protection laws to allow development of basic infrastructure and public services in protected forest zones, where 98% of Mae Hong Son's territory is legally classified as forest reserve. Currently, 6,743 approved infrastructure projects—including road repairs, electricity, water systems, and housing—cannot proceed due to restrictions under the Forest Reserve Act, National Park Act, and Wildlife Conservation Act, which also require environmental impact assessments. "Mae Hong Son residents face severe hardship," Pongphipat stated. "Many villages lack concrete roads, electricity, and water systems. Travel from villages to town is extremely difficult, and this severely impacts people's quality of life." The local governments also requested removal of a June 23, 2020 cabinet resolution that blocked emergency energy crisis relief projects, and they asked the Transport Ministry to upgrade a dangerously deteriorated rural road in Mae Sam Laeb. Additionally, officials petitioned the government to urgently address heavy metal contamination in the Salween River and publicly disclose water quality data.
