Thai Woman, 28, Arrested in Japan With Ice Hidden in Coffee Packets

A Thai woman aged 28 was arrested at Fukuoka Airport in Japan after authorities discovered crystal methamphetamine hidden inside coffee packets. She faces two serious charges that could carry a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. According to her parents, named Thanasakdi (surname withheld), 53, and Kanyavee (surname withheld), 45, their daughter Chudatip (surname withheld), 28, traveled to Japan on July 11, 2026 with her boyfriend Sarawuth, 28, and another friend. The three worked as couriers delivering packages to Thai residents in Japan. When she arrived at Fukuoka Airport, Japanese officials discovered ice hidden in coffee packets in her luggage and placed her in custody on July 12, 2026 at approximately 7:00 AM, charging her with drug smuggling. Her family suspects she may have been duped and requests investigation into the mysterious individual who provided the package.

On July 27, 2026, Areeaphakdi Ngenburn, Deputy Secretary-General of the Royal Thai Police and Police Spokesperson, explained that Japanese legal procedures differ from many countries. Japanese authorities must conduct scientific verification to confirm the type and exact quantity of narcotics before proceeding. Currently, police only confirm ice was found in coffee packets but lack precise quantity details. If investigation confirms trafficking intent, the maximum penalty is life imprisonment, though Japanese courts typically sentence such cases to 5–10 years based on case circumstances. The Thai woman faces two charges: ice-type drug trafficking and customs law violations. She remains in Japanese police custody and has been remanded by prosecutors since July 13, 2026, with detention review scheduled for July 31, 2026. The Japanese prosecutor will decide whether to indict by that date. If indicted, she will remain in custody during trial; a decision typically comes within two months. If not indicted, she will be deported immediately. Police continue coordinating with Japanese counterparts on her travel records: she departed Don Mueang on July 11 and was arrested upon arrival at Fukuoka on July 12. Regarding the family's belief that she is a victim rather than an accomplice, police cannot confirm victim status yet, as investigation authority rests with Japanese police, who must gather evidence, conduct interviews, and verify all facts before prosecutors decide whether to proceed with charges, consistent with procedures in similar cases abroad.
