Thai Zoo Organization Balances Conservation, Research, Learning, Innovation
The Zoo Organization of Thailand under Royal Patronage balances wildlife conservation, research, education, and innovation across its seven facilities nationwide. It has successfully reintroduced species such as Thai cranes, hornbills, and clouded leopards, and launched digital tools like the ZOODIO platform and Zoo e‑Ticket system. Each zoo—from Khao Kheow Open Zoo to Chiang Mai and Nakhon Ratchasima—offers distinct learning and conservation experiences for the public.
Every time we enter a zoo, the first thing we see is children's smiles, family happiness, and the cuteness of various animals. But behind these images lie many stories that most people never hear.
The Zoo Organization of Thailand under Royal Patronage does not merely display animals; it has an important mission to conserve, research, and rehabilitate wildlife both in‑situ and ex‑situ, while developing natural learning sources to fulfill its vision of zoos as sustainable natural learning resources.
Over the past decades it has achieved national and international conservation successes, such as reintroducing Thai cranes, hornbills, white‑storks, adjutants, and clouded leopards back into nature, and it now uses digital innovations like the ZOODIO platform and Zoo e‑Ticket system to enhance education, research, and management.
Khao Kheow Open Zoo – Thailand’s first large open zoo, covering over 5,000 rai, simulates natural habitats for wildlife to roam freely. It is famous for its diverse species, including many tiger breeds, the beloved dwarf hippo “Moo Deng,” the clever hippo “Mali,” two‑toed sloths, penguin parades, elephant swimming shows, and the Night Zoo experience.
Chiang Mai Zoo – Set amid the Doi Suthep hills on more than 531 rai, it offers close‑up views of varied wildlife, the Chiang Mai Zoo Aquarium, Behind the Zoo activities, capybara groups, Asian elephants, the black tiger “Ying Lee,” and the Snow Buddy Winter Land for a unique blend of learning, fun, and cold‑weather experiences.
Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo – Serves as the national center for the conservation and breeding of the Thai Sarus Crane, leading breeding and release programs for this species and other rare wildlife to boost biodiversity and ecosystem balance.
