Thailand Denies Using Military Ties as Trade Bargaining Chip With US

Thailand's government rejected claims it is using military cooperation as leverage in US trade talks, insisting both relationships are pursued independently based on their own strategic interests and frameworks.

Thailand Denies Using Military Ties as Trade Bargaining Chip With US
6d ago Khaosod

Government spokesman Ratchada Thanadirek rejected reports from some foreign news agencies claiming that Thailand plans to use military and security cooperation as a negotiating condition in trade talks with the United States, calling such claims false and contrary to Thai government policy. Trade negotiations with the US are based on Thailand's economic interests, fairness, and balanced trade, with the government carefully considering proposals and their effects on farmers, businesses, manufacturers, and the Thai public while seeking mutually beneficial and fair agreements. Ratchada stated that Thailand-US military and security cooperation is a longstanding relationship pursued on the basis of shared security interests and various collaborative efforts, including the Cobra Gold joint exercise, which continues according to its established framework and plans without being linked as a condition to trade negotiation outcomes. The Cobra Gold 27 exercise, the 46th iteration under a six-year training plan through 2030, will involve 31 countries to build capacity and readiness against traditional and emerging threats such as cyber and space operations, with planning meetings scheduled in Hawaii in September ahead of training in March 2025. Ratchada emphasized that Thailand and the US have broad and deep multidimensional relationships spanning economics, trade, security, and people-to-people ties, and that the government will not trade one national interest against another, with each area requiring careful consideration of its respective framework and benefits.

Thailand Partners with Apple on Child Online Safety Controls

Thailand's Social Development Ministry partnered with Apple to develop child protection systems that filter age-inappropriate content and limit screen time while supporting safer device usage among youth.

Thailand Partners with Apple on Child Online Safety Controls
6d ago Khaosod

Thailand's Social Development Ministry has partnered with Apple to promote child protection systems that control content by age and limit screen time without harming children's development or fostering undesirable habits.

On August 12, Chaninan Rungthanakiart, advisor to the Social Development and Human Security Ministry, revealed that he was tasked by Social Development Minister Nikorn Somklaeng to meet and discuss policy matters with Mike Orgill, Apple's Asia-Pacific Regional Managing Director, and his team regarding online safety for children and youth and how to use devices to promote human capital development.

Chaninan stated that the meeting unanimously agreed to promote the Child Protection system currently under development as a default device setting as quickly as possible to serve as a parental control system. The system will set age-appropriate content limits, include detection and blurring of nude images, violence, and graphic content, alert parents when inappropriate content is accessed, and require parental approval before viewing.

Chaninan emphasized the Social Development Ministry's ongoing work to establish screen time guidelines for children to educate the public, especially parents, about appropriate device usage limits for each age group to prevent harm to development or the formation of undesirable habits. The ministry is seeking private sector cooperation to communicate and promote these guidelines.

Chaninan also noted discussions on supporting the livelihoods and employment of people with disabilities through technology devices. The ministry supports training programs for Apple products with eye-tracking controls, voice commands, and screen-reading features to help various groups of people with disabilities access modern technology more equitably.

"The advent of AI and artificial intelligence has both benefits and serious harms. If society cannot prepare in time, I ask for the cooperation of various private sectors in working with the government to establish appropriate regulatory measures and help raise awareness among all groups of people so we can advance together," Chaninan said.

Police Clarify Self-Defense Laws in Fatal Home Intrusion Case
6d ago Khaosod

Deputy National Police Chief Trirongse Pinpunya, serving as police spokesman, offered legal guidance through his Facebook page after a public debate arose over a homeowner's right to use force against an intruder who was then fatally shot. He noted that police have a duty to investigate any shooting death—to examine the scene, collect evidence, and determine whether the use of force was justified—but this does not presume guilt.

Under the Criminal Code section 68, a person who uses force to defend against an unlawful threat faces no criminal liability if the threat is imminent and the defensive action is proportionate. Conversely, if the threat has already passed and force is used afterward, legal evaluation changes. If the facts show lawful and proportionate self-defense, the person is not guilty. If force was used but exceeded what was necessary, section 69 allows courts to impose a lighter sentence or, if the act arose from shock or fear, no sentence at all.

Pinpunya emphasized that there is no blanket rule—neither "you can always shoot a burglar" nor "you are always guilty for shooting an intruder." The key facts are the circumstances at the moment: was the intruder close, unresponsive to warnings, and posing a believable threat to life, body, or property? Police investigation does not mean police conclude the defender is guilty. When someone dies, officers must document the scene, examine weapons and injuries, conduct forensic tests, review CCTV footage, interview witnesses, and gather all circumstances to understand what happened when the decision to use force was made.

The justice system then evaluates the facts and evidence through each stage—investigator, prosecutor, and if needed, court—before a final determination. The important point is that citizens have a legal right to defend themselves and others; the question is whether that defense was lawful and proportionate in the specific circumstances.

Government Defends Stricter Gun Control Measures

The Thai government is formulating stricter gun control legislation that distinguishes between ownership rights and the right to carry weapons in public, with officials defending the approach against criticism from sport shooters and self-d

Government Defends Stricter Gun Control Measures
6d ago Khaosod

Deputy Government Spokesman Lalida Pherisaiwiwat addressed criticism of the government's gun control approach on August 12, stating that the administration welcomes all suggestions and concerns regarding self-defense rights and impacts on sport shooters. The government is still formulating detailed legislation and has not concluded whether to impose a complete ban or restrict citizens' self-defense rights.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and the Interior Minister want ownership, carrying, and use of firearms to fall under stricter control, clearly distinguishing between the right to own and the right to carry and use weapons. Even legally registered firearms cannot be carried in public or used at will. The government is addressing both illegal and legal weapons without discrimination, suspending new welfare gun programs, halting and reviewing firearm purchase permits (Form 3), reorganizing related licenses, inspecting gun and ammunition dealers, checking weapons at firing ranges, linking databases electronically, and strictly suppressing illegal firearms.

Regarding proposals for physical and mental health checks or a reset program calling all gun owners back for screening, Pherisaiwiwat said these are worth studying but require consideration of legal, practical, organizational readiness, and fairness issues before implementation.

Concerning worries that citizens cannot use firearms for self-defense even at home, she emphasized that the government's policy does not eliminate current law under the legal defense principle under Criminal Code Article 68, assessed case by case. However, merely claiming gun ownership for self-defense cannot justify carrying weapons in public spaces, as authorities cannot distinguish between legitimate self-defense, intimidation, or premeditation.

The government acknowledges sport shooters' concerns and will tailor details to sporting use, requiring proper storage of weapons and ammunition in appropriate venues without ending the sport. She rejected comparisons with cannabis policy, saying each issue must be judged separately. The government's goal is not to frighten law-abiding citizens but to ensure all understand that gun ownership carries strict limitations and high responsibility, and firearms should not be everyday carry items used to threaten others casually.

Thailand Pushes Thai SELECT Brand in China via TV and Influencers

Thailand's trade promotion department is boosting Thai SELECT brand awareness in China through a televised cooking competition on Guangzhou Television and influencer campaigns on major Chinese social media platforms.

Thailand Pushes Thai SELECT Brand in China via TV and Influencers
6d ago Khaosod

The Department of International Trade Promotion is moving forward to expand the Thai food market in China by partnering with Chinese television to host a Thai cooking competition that promotes the Thai SELECT brand. The campaign leverages key opinion leaders and influencers on popular Chinese social media platforms including Douyin, Xiaohongshu, and Weibo to increase brand awareness, stimulate consumer interest in Thai restaurants, and boost long-term Thai food business opportunities in China.

On August 12, Sunanta Kangwalkulgit, Director General of the Department of International Trade Promotion under the Ministry of Commerce, announced that she has instructed commercial attaches stationed worldwide to accelerate the expansion of Thai products and services in line with policy set by Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Supa Juea Sutthiramphan. The department recently received a report from Prapaporn Srihere, director of the Trade Promotion Office in Guangzhou, China, detailing the successful results of Thai food and Thai SELECT brand promotion activities in the Chinese market, which have increased consumer awareness and driven trial of Thai restaurants and Thai SELECT-branded establishments.

Commercial attaches organized a Thai cooking competition at 1906 Young Town Plaza in Guangzhou to film a special episode of the Chinese television program "Wo Ai Fan Xun Wei" (In Search of Flavor) for Guangzhou Television. The broadcast aims to showcase the appeal of Thai food and Thai SELECT restaurants to reach Chinese consumers widely through television media, while simultaneously generating momentum on China's leading social media platforms. Thai food culture serves as a bridge to create experience and awareness of Thai SELECT among Chinese consumers through entertaining cooking competition content that is easy to understand and fun, allowing viewers to observe Thai cooking techniques, ingredients, and authentic Thai seasonings.

The event was honored by the Consul General in Guangzhou serving as honorary judge, with Thai commercial attaches and officials as judges, alongside Chinese partners including executives from Guangzhou Premium Food Week and management of 1906 Young Town Plaza. Two Thai restaurants carrying the Thai SELECT certification, eight shopping mall representatives, and two trade association representatives participated, reflecting strong cooperation between Thai and Chinese partners in promoting Thai food and restaurants in the Chinese market. The event attracted significant interest from consumers and tourists in the 1906 Young Town Plaza area, bringing Thai food promotion directly to local consumer groups.

The highlight of the event was a Thai cooking competition in television format featuring popular Thai dishes and Thai SELECT-certified products. Thai chefs from Thai SELECT restaurants and Chinese chefs experienced in Thai cuisine demonstrated the charm and unique characteristics of Thai food to Chinese viewers. The competition format not only provided entertainment but also told the story of Thai food through the real experience of competitors and chefs, allowing Chinese viewers to gain deeper knowledge of Thai cuisine beyond seeing finished dishes. Viewers witnessed ingredient selection, cooking methods, and the meticulous attention to creating authentic Thai flavors. By filming the activity as a Chinese television program, the promotion reaches audiences far beyond the event venue.

Three Missing National Park Rangers Found Safe in Kanchanaburi

Three rangers from Thong Pha Phum National Park have been found safe after going missing during a patrol operation aimed at stopping illegal gold mining activities. Minister Suchart Chomklin reported that the three officers—Somchai Suntad (44), Pornpavit Chimplee (31), and Pajeu Sangkalawikhul (29)—separated from their main patrol unit on August 8 to conduct surveillance in the mountainous Kel Geering stream area, a hotspot for illegal gold panning and mining. They lost contact after August 9. The terrain in the area is complex with numerous streams and ravines, and heavy rain and stormy weather had made travel and air support extremely difficult. A coordinated search operation was launched, bringing together 45 personnel from the Border Patrol Police, special operations units, and several national parks. A command center was established to coordinate the full-scale rescue effort. The search was successful, with all three rangers located and confirmed safe. They have since returned to their unit and made contact with their command. The minister has instructed agencies to monitor the officers' physical condition and safety closely, and expressed gratitude to all personnel involved in the successful rescue operation.

Mekong River Floods Thai-Lao Market, 2cm From Crisis Level

Mekong River Floods Thai-Lao Market, 2cm From Crisis Level
6d ago Khaosod

As of 6 a.m. on August 12, 2025, the Mekong River at Nakhon Phanom's hydrological station measured 11.98 meters—up 15 centimeters from the previous day and just 2 centimeters short of critical level, expected to be reached this afternoon. The municipality has shut all four automatic drainage gates to block backflow that could inundate the city. Water pouring from Bueng Kham province and Laos has overwhelmed agricultural land in Ban Klang district, roughly 28 kilometers from town, flooding over 100 rai of banana, bamboo, and fragrant coconut plantations to depths of one meter and submerging a concrete road for more than three kilometers.

The overflow at the temporary market relaxation zone and OTOP building caused garbage bins, plastic water containers, and vendor tables to float away; traders scrambled to lash down remaining goods. Dawsuwan, 59, grows Deng bamboo shoots across three plots totaling over 30 rai, home to some 200 plants. Since August 9, rapid flooding inundated two plots to a depth of one meter; she normally supplies 50 kilograms daily to city markets but received an order for 2,000 kilograms today—a demand her remaining unaflooded plot may not meet, risking substantial income loss.

Buenchareun Prombut, 67, village headman of Ban Klang, attributed the flooding to rapid upstream flows and heavy local rain, which caused the Mekong to overflow steadily over two to three days, reaching depths of one to 1.5 meters in places. Lao merchants from across the border, who normally trade forest goods such as rodents, squirrels, mushrooms, and insects, now find the Lao side equally flooded; goods left in the market buildings drift on the water awaiting recovery by boat.

In Si Songkhram district, the Songkhram River began overflowing on the afternoon of August 11, particularly at Tha Bo Songkhram and Pak Un villages, flooding eight to ten riverside homes with water depth averaging 50 centimeters to one meter. Sub-district officer Kornkarn Kaewdee led health workers, village leaders, and flat-bottomed boats to deliver emergency supplies and comfort victims, with emphasis on waterborne disease prevention for the elderly, children, and those requiring special care until conditions return to normal.

Niwat Cheawiribun, Nakhon Phanom municipal mayor, reported that Mekong levels continue rising steadily. The four automatic pumping stations along the east bank—at Tesapradit Road, Samutbannharn Road, Post Office Junction, and Wat Phi Sri—which normally drain water into the Mekong, have reached capacity. All four drainage gates have been ordered closed. The municipality will deploy long-range pumps and over ten large mobile pumping units from Region 7 Waterworks Authority (Sakon Nakhon) stationed at key points and along the riverbank, ready to accelerate water discharge into the Mekong if heavy rain or backflow threatens the town.

Police responded at 8:10 p.m. on August 10 to a vehicle collision on the Pa Phut-Saen Tao Bridge in Kamphaeng Phet province's Kanu Wor Lak subdistrict. Officers found a silver Mitsubishi Titan pickup truck with registration number GB 5832 severely damaged on the front and sides. The driver, 45-year-old Supat from Pang Ma Ka subdistrict, was at the scene appearing intoxicated and incoherent.

On the other side of the bridge, a gray Nissan Navara pickup with registration BP 8830 from Phichit province had also been hit by Supat's truck near a convenience store. The collision then continued as Supat's vehicle crossed the bridge and struck a Honda Wave 110i motorcycle driven by a 14-year-old girl from Khong Phai subdistrict, who died at the scene with her left arm severed. A 19-year-old male passenger on the motorcycle was taken to hospital but later died. A second male victim also perished, bringing the death toll to two.

Closed-circuit footage revealed that Supat had left a village chief celebration dinner at 8:06 p.m. and was driving back across the bridge when he encountered the two teenagers on their motorcycle at a convenience store junction. The youths were preparing to board a vehicle for a study trip to Suphan Buri province. Supat's truck veered back, hit the motorcycle, and accelerated up the bridge, crashing into the teenagers before losing control and striking an electrical pole. The truck nearly hit a noodle shop but fortunately no customers were standing outside at the time.

Footage shows officers initially did not realize Supat had hit the motorcyclists on the bridge until a following vehicle informed them. Social media has erupted with criticism questioning whether local politicians attempted to suppress the incident. The provincial governor has ordered an immediate severe disciplinary investigation and demanded Supat's resignation from his position as village chief.

Amulet Shop Owner Admits Error in Gold Coin Transaction

A Ko Lanta amulet shop owner admitted a staff member accidentally left a valuable gold coin in a testing machine, which he resolved by purchasing the amulets for 9 million baht rather than a legal settlement as social media claimed.

Amulet Shop Owner Admits Error in Gold Coin Transaction
6d ago Khaosod

Pon Tha Phra Chan has gone live to clarify a dispute involving a gold amulet coin that has become a point of contention in the amulet collecting community. Social media pages had accused him of swapping amulets, claiming the amulet's owner later discovered the issue and settled the matter for 9 million baht in exchange for not filing charges.

According to Pon Tha Phra Chan, on his birthday around August 5, a customer brought in a large number of amulets for inspection. His staff assisted in checking them. The disputed gold amulet coin was left inside a gold percentage testing machine by a staff member—an error he acknowledged immediately. Upon learning of the mistake, he suspended the employee and contacted the customer to resolve the issue at once.

He expressed shock and regret at the incident, noting the employee had worked with him for 10 to 15 years. When arranging to return the amulets, the customer asked what price he would offer to purchase them, leading to a negotiated sale at 9 million baht—not a settlement to avoid legal action as social media claimed.

Regarding a separate amulet set priced at 2.5 million baht, he acknowledged he could not accurately count the pieces in the set that day because nearly 200 customers visited the shop simultaneously, preventing thorough service.

Pon Tha Phra Chan released an audio clip of his conversation with the amulet's owner, in which the customer stated he held no grudge, had no intention to file charges, understood it was a mistake, and that the matter was resolved amicably. He expressed puzzlement over why the story spread on social media.

He further suggested that the incident may have been publicized by a third party who lost a business opportunity, possibly with intent to damage his reputation.

Murder Suspect Adapts Well to Prison on First Night

A 71-year-old man charged with fatally shooting Nonthaburi's provincial administrator was remanded in custody without bail; prison officials reported he adapted well to his first night, eating normally and showing no signs of distress.

Murder Suspect Adapts Well to Prison on First Night

On August 12, 2025, Chaleuang Rieowraeng, 71, a suspect in the fatal shooting of Thongchai Yenprasoet, the Nonthaburi provincial administrator, was brought before Nonthaburi Provincial Court for the first remand hearing (Case No. Black 823/2569). Investigators charged him with multiple offences including intentional murder, attempted murder, unlicensed possession of a firearm in public places, and unlawful discharge of a firearm in populated areas, violating the Criminal Code sections 32, 33, 80, 91, 288, 371, 376 and the Firearms Act of 1947. The court denied his bail application, citing the gravity of the charges and serious risk of flight or further harm, and ordered him remanded in custody pending trial.

Chaleuang arrived at Nonthaburi provincial prison on August 11 and completed intake procedures before entering a five-day Covid-19 quarantine facility. On his first night, staff confirmed he adjusted well and ate normally, including evening dishes of jungle curry with bamboo shoots, rice, and boiled eggs. Prison authorities stated that his care, meals, and facilities met the same standard as all other detainees, with no special privileges or differential treatment. He was not previously a guard, so his status had no bearing on his treatment.

Health screening revealed slightly elevated blood pressure, for which he brought prescribed medication. Medical staff provided appropriate care and he underwent an initial mental health assessment. Psychologically, Chaleuang showed no distress about his charges but reported minor sleep difficulties because he normally slept during the day, making nighttime rest challenging. He was given sleeping medication as needed. Staff found no signs of self-harm risk, and he can request counseling from prison mental health personnel if needed.
