The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported to Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on the first meeting of the mandatory arbitration commission in the UNCLOS process between Thailand and Cambodia. Deputy Prime Minister Sihosak Puangketkeaw represented Thailand, while Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Benjammin Sukanjanajati led a delegation to brief the Prime Minister at Government House following talks held in Singapore on September 14-16.
In a later interview, Sukanjanajati said the discussions proceeded well and nothing extraordinary occurred, as it was the first meeting. The Prime Minister was briefed on the topics discussed, with detailed outcomes to follow in subsequent meetings.
When asked if the Prime Minister had conveyed any special instructions, Sukanjanajati said he provided encouragement but no specific directives. Regarding praise for the talks, the official offered only preliminary comments, noting that the process is lengthy—spanning 11-12 years—and too early to provide detailed assessments.
Asked whether Thailand fought to protect national interests, Sukanjanajati affirmed that Thailand would naturally do so to safeguard the country's interests. He clarified that the current talks concerned maritime matters only, with land border issues to be handled by relevant border agencies separately.
