Khao Chi Chan, commonly called Buddha Mountain, is one of the most visually striking religious sites in Thailand, and also one of the most consistently misdescribed. It is one of the more unusual and genuinely impressive sites in the eastern region, and for anyone planning a trip through Thailand’s east coast, it is worth building into the itinerary rather than leaving as an afterthought. How Khao Chi Chan was actually made The image on the cliff is not laser-carved. What actually happened, beginning in January 1996, is that engineers installed a 20-watt argon-ion laser in a container approximately 215 metres in front of the cliff and used it to project the full Buddha design onto the rock face after dark. Teams of rope-access workers then descended the cliff at night and traced along the projected lines in white acrylic paint. The laser acted as a giant precision layout tool, not a cutting device. Once the outline was traced, craftsmen saw-cut the boundaries of the broad lines, used small controlled explosive charges to remove stone to a depth of roughly 15 centimetres, and hand-carved sensitive areas such as the Buddha’s face to reduce the risk of damage. The resulting grooves were sealed with cement and then faced with gold-coated Italian glass mosaic tiles, one centimetre square, ordered specially for the project. The result is a deeply incised golden outline visible across the surrounding landscape. The hill had been heavily quarried for limestone, and the Buddha project was partly conceived as a way to rehabilitate and protect that scarred landscape. The wider context was the upcoming fiftieth anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s accession to the throne in 1996. The monument was dedicated to that Golden Jubilee. King Bhumibol approved the line-engraving concept in 1992, per project documentation, specifically recommending it over a low-relief sculpture because of concerns about maintaining limestone. The Supreme Patriarch Somdet Phra Yanasangwon chaired the monastic advisory side of the project, then-Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn chaired the executive committee, and Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn served as vice-chair. The first carving blast took place on January 24, 1996, according to project records. In November 2001, Buddha relics were installed inside the chest of the image, and a formal royal ceremony in December 2001 marked the site’s official opening. The nearest commercial airport is U-Tapao Rayong-Pattaya International Airport. Most visitors arrive by private car, hired car or taxi. A direct public bus service to the monument was not identified, so independent transport is the practical option for most people. Entry is widely reported as free, though checking locally before visiting is advisable. The landscaped foreground includes a large lotus pond, pavilions, lawns and shade trees, with parking and bathroom facilities available. For photography and comfort, early morning after opening or late afternoon is considerably better than the exposed middle of the day. A safety exclusion zone exists at the base of the cliff, a measure recommended during the original construction given the fractured geology of the former quarry. Stay behind the barriers. The lantern festival Each February, Khao Chi Chan hosts its annual lantern festival, combining illuminated processions, outdoor cultural performances and Buddhist devotional activities centred on the relics enshrined within the image. The eleventh edition was held in February 2025, and the event continued in 2026 on February 20 and 21. Visitors specifically interested in the festival should check current dates with provincial tourism authorities before travelling, as scheduling is confirmed closer to the event each year. What kind of site it actually is Khao Chi Chan is not listed among Thailand’s UNESCO World Heritage properties, and no formal Fine Arts Department registration as an ancient monument was verified in available sources. It is a modern royal-Buddhist monument built in the 1990s and actively maintained by a provincial multi-agency committee. That places it in different company from Thailand’s ancient temple ruins, but does not diminish what it is: a genuinely unusual piece of late twentieth-century religious engineering, built on a quarry scar, commemorating a reign, and still used for active worship and Buddhist ceremony. For most visitors making the trip from Pattaya, it is one of the more memorable stops in the region and considerably more substantial than the laser-Buddha label suggests.
