Industry Minister Weerawuth Silphacha announced the latest developments in an investigation into loud explosions and tremors detected across four districts of Rayong province on August 13. On August 17, the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand, in coordination with Rayong's provincial industrial office, the Department of Basic Industries and Mines, local police, and district administrators, inspected the site at the WHA Eastern Seaboard 5 project in Ban Khai district. The inspection team, which included local representatives and the contractor Baan Khai Concrete Products, found evidence and traces indicating rock destruction using blasting methods while the site was undergoing land preparation. The authority has instructed all evidence be sent for expert verification to determine what occurred and whether operations complied with law. "I have immediately ordered the industrial estate to halt all land-preparation work in areas containing rock, and barred outsiders from the site to preserve evidence," Weerawuth stated. "We will fast-track verification and take decisive legal action if violations are found, while rapidly assessing damage to compensate affected residents." The estate has also ordered the project developer to explain within three business days, covering work procedures, environmental safeguards under the environmental impact assessment, permits, and legal compliance. The investigation will examine daily reports, coordinate site photographs with work sequences, and involve expert analysis to reach firm conclusions. The estate and contractor had previously maintained that excavation and rock extraction followed EIA guidelines using only hydraulic breakers, with no explosives involved, making the newly discovered traces a key point requiring clarification. Citizens experiencing problems can call the 24-hour hotline 1564.

When close friends Vikki Sunisa and Khaoput Smithimanant attended the gala night for the musical "Muang Maraya: The Musical" at Muang Thai Rachadalai Theatre in Esplanade Ratchada shopping center, both granted interviews to media. Vikki spoke about the dedication and commitment of her husband Chai Chatayodm, who rehearses intensively for the stage production every day and had no time to celebrate his 50th birthday with friends.

Meanwhile, Khaoput provided an update on her legal case involving Nana Raybeena, which has been extended to witness examination scheduled for June next year. She expressed her acceptance of the legal process and her decision to focus on her career and enjoying life with her circle of friends.

When asked how she supports her brother during his demanding rehearsals, Vikki said: "I can see he's training very hard, rehearsing intensively. It's something worth looking forward to."

Regarding her brother's birthday celebration, Vikki explained: "My brother barely has time to be with family, but we celebrated at home and with his extended family. He turned 50 this year but couldn't go out to eat with friends because he's rehearsing this every single day. He's very committed. This is another project he's extremely dedicated to."

Asked about his current life, Khaoput said: "Life is good right now. Watching this stage production makes me realize we need to create happiness for ourselves. Last year was tough, so we're focusing on finding joy. In 2016, you'll see me traveling a lot. Everything passes, so if we keep dwelling on the same issues, we won't be happy. Our happiness is our priority."

When asked about friend support, Khaoput responded: "There's plenty of encouragement, sometimes even excessive. We support each other, going out to eat, drink, travel, dance, and exercise together. We create enjoyable experiences and build our life stories. 2026 should be a good year."

On the legal case progress, Khaoput stated: "The next hearing should be around June next year. It's still quite far off before the court appearance. This is the first witness examination."

When asked about the direction of the case, she said: "We need to be confident and happy, thinking positively. Just good vibes. The direction looks good."

Asked if there had been any settlement discussions, Khaoput replied: "No."

Describing what happened on the court day, Khaoput said: "I felt warm because many friends came. I only saw Jensuda, but actually about 10 friends went. I felt supported. Having each other there felt good."

When asked about the opposing party's demeanor during their first court confrontation, Khaoput said: "He showed no particular reaction. He kept his head down. But on my husband's side, as Jensuda mentioned in her interview, he just stared at us."

22h ago Khaosod

The Department of Medical Sciences, Ministry of Public Health, is advancing a health economics initiative from laboratory research to real-world application by partnering with networks to upgrade sanitation standards at hotels in Koh Samui under the DMSc Certified trademark and the 3C concept: Clean Bed, Clean Air, Clean Food. The program covers bed bug-free accommodation, safe air and water free from pathogens, and safe food, with 25 model hotels in Koh Samui receiving the 3C Sustainable Hotel certificate to build confidence among Thai and foreign tourists.

On August 17, Dr. Sarawut Bunsuk, Director-General of the Department of Medical Sciences, chaired the opening of a knowledge-sharing forum to enhance implementation of the bed bug and pathogen surveillance programme at Koh Samui hotels. The event brought together officials from the Department of Medical Sciences and partner agencies including the Surat Thani Provincial Public Health Office, Tourism Authority of Thailand Koh Samui Office, Koh Samui Tourism Promotion Association, and hotel operators.

Dr. Sarawut stated that Koh Samui is a major tourism destination popular with Thai and international visitors, making hygiene and disease prevention essential for promoting economic growth. The Department of Medical Sciences and partners are sharing medical science knowledge and implementing surveillance measures against pathogens in hotel water, food, and bed bugs to protect tourists. This effort enhances hotel reputation, increases tourist confidence, and supports Thailand's economy.

The department is driving health economics through the DMSc Certified trademark under the 3C concept focusing on bug-free beds, pathogen-free air and water, and safe food to build tourist confidence and support Thailand's tourism sector. A memorandum of understanding was also signed among the Department of Medical Sciences, Koh Samui Municipality, Koh Samui Tourism Promotion Association, and the Tourism Authority of Thailand to integrate cooperation between government, tourism, and hotel operators in developing sanitation standards and monitoring for Legionella, norovirus, foodborne pathogens, and bed bugs. The collaboration aims to promote Koh Samui as a quality health tourism destination, building confidence among Thai and foreign tourists while strengthening the competitiveness of the tourism industry.

Justice Minister Defends Drug Kingpin's Early Release Procedures

An 85-year-old drug kingpin's early release and royal pardon triggered a Justice Ministry review that found procedural irregularities, though the minister said the case cannot be reopened since it's legally concluded.

Justice Minister Rutthapol Naruebet addressed the release of 85-year-old Lao Ta Saen Lee, a prominent drug trafficking convict who had his life sentence reduced to eight years and was granted a royal pardon on August 14, following public criticism. The case prompted the establishment of two separate responses: the Department of Corrections has been asked to clarify the prisoner assessment process and the procedures for submitting royal pardon recommendations, while the Justice Ministry has formed a working group to review pardon criteria.

The Minister acknowledged finding multiple procedural irregularities during the review. When asked whether the case could be reopened, Rutthapol stated that would not be possible because the matter is considered legally concluded. He emphasized that officials followed the regulations in place at the time, but initial findings suggest the regulations themselves contain deficiencies that require improvement.

Regarding the distinction between regulatory fault and procedural error, Rutthapol said the responsibility lies with the regulations that officials were required to follow. When pressed on why Thai prisoners might receive harsher treatment under the same procedures, he cited age as a contributing factor and requested further investigation. The Minister expressed confidence that staff acted without malicious intent and followed established rules, though he acknowledged opposition parties may raise the matter in parliament. He said the government is prepared with detailed explanations of which regulations applied in each year and how the case was initially reviewed.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, along with the Interior Minister, presided over a networking reception on August 18, 2025, in Sydney (local time 4:00 p.m., three hours ahead of Thailand) between leading Thai and Australian business executives. The Board of Investment (BOI) organized the event to strengthen business connections and create trade and investment opportunities between Thai and Australian private sectors.

The BOI curated a group of 53 major Australian companies spanning technology, digital, agriculture, automotive, and education sectors. The executives heard directly from the Prime Minister on Thailand's investment promotion policies as part of broader strategic cooperation between the two nations.

BOI Secretary-General Naruetom Terdsteeraksak explained: "While Australian investors have not invested heavily in Thailand in the past, this is an opportunity to expand future cooperation. These may not be large-scale investments, but rather specialized firms that can help advance Thailand's high-tech development systems. We believe Thailand will benefit greatly."

Suvarnabhumi Auto Gate to open to 31 more nationalitiesLegacySuvarnabhumi Airport plans to open its Auto Gate lanes to travellers from 31 more nationalities by the end of August. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Suphajee Suthumpun led a site visit and briefing at the airport. Officials from the Tourism and Sports and Transport ministries took part. The airport handles about 190,000 passengers a day in peak season, and 140,000 to 150,000 a day in low season. International arrivals account for roughly 70,000 passengers a day. Immigration is busiest between 1pm and 5pm, when 5,000 to 6,000 passengers an hour pass through. The Immigration Bureau has approved the expansion in principle and is waiting on final signatures. The list was drawn from entry-refusal figures, a country’s ranking on the Henley Passport Index and security assessments. The change is expected to add about 6.5 million potential Suvarnabhumi Auto Gate users, plus 900,000 long-term visa holders. Officials expect the gates to take 53% of arriving passengers once the system is running fully, leaving 47% at a staffed counter. The gates will open in stages, as each part of the system is ready and as biometric records allow. Travellers who have entered Thailand before and are already on file will be able to use them first. Anyone arriving for the first time still has to have their biometrics taken at the counter before the gates are an option for them. Airport authorities also plan immediate steps to thin the queues. They will make use of all three immigration zones, redirect passengers, open a central hall and put more officers on duty at peak times. Deputy government spokesperson Lalida Periswiwatana warned that some tourists file the Thailand Digital Arrival Card through unofficial websites, in remarks reported by Xinhua. Those sites charge fees or carry a fraud risk, she said, while the official system costs nothing. Suphajee said the relevant agencies would handle immediate problems at Suvarnabhumi. Anything needing legislation or long-term investment will go to government level. BANGKOK — Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul arrived in Sydney on Sunday night for an official visit to Australia aimed at advancing the Thailand-Australia Strategic Partnership.

Government spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek said Anutin arrived at 22:00 Sydney time. He is visiting Australia from 17-20 August at the invitation of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The trip is intended to turn the two countries' strategic partnership into concrete cooperation across a range of areas, she said.

Anutin was welcomed by New South Wales Attorney-General Michael John Daley, representing the state governor; Laura Thomson, acting deputy head of protocol at the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet; and Karina Cameron, deputy chief of protocol for New South Wales.

An official welcome ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, 19 August, at Parliament House in Canberra.

On Monday, Anutin is due to pay a courtesy call on the Governor of New South Wales at Government House in Sydney, before delivering a speech at the Lowy Institute on Thailand's vision for relations with Australia and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.

He will then meet members of the Thai community and visit Thai Town before meeting executives of Canva Pty Ltd. and touring its office. The discussion is expected to cover digital technology, innovation and opportunities for cooperation in the digital economy.

Thai Woman Dies Mysteriously in South Korea, Family Seeks Help

A 34-year-old Thai massage therapist died unexpectedly in South Korea after seven years working abroad, leaving her Kamphaeng Phet family unable to afford the 100,000-200,000 baht cost to bring her body or ashes home for funeral rites.

KAMPHAENG PHET — A Thai mother is devastated after learning that her 34-year-old daughter, who had worked as a traditional massage therapist in South Korea for seven years, died under unexplained circumstances.

The family, from Kamphaeng Phet province, said they do not have enough money to bring her body home for a funeral.

Several Facebook pages shared an appeal seeking relatives of a Thai woman who had died suddenly in South Korea. She was later identified as Piyawan, known as Pla, 34, from Kamphaeng Phet.

The case came to public attention after many Facebook pages posted a photo and urged the woman's relatives to urgently contact the Royal Thai Embassy in Seoul.

A local community leader in Trai Trueng subdistrict recognized the woman as a resident of the area and immediately contacted reporters.

Reporters later visited the family home in Trai Trueng subdistrict, Mueang district, Kamphaeng Phet, where they met Pla's 69-year-old mother, Lam Yai, who was grieving heavily.

Lam Yai said her daughter had traveled to South Korea seven years ago to work as a traditional massage therapist. She regularly called home to check on the family and occasionally sent money to support them.

Their last conversation was on 8 August, when Pla told her mother that she was experiencing unusually heavy menstrual bleeding. Her mother advised her to buy painkillers. She said her daughter had no known underlying medical conditions.

The family was shocked by the news and said they would leave South Korean authorities to investigate the exact cause of death.

Tearfully, Lam Yai said she had contacted her daughter's colleagues in South Korea and learned that transporting the body back to Thailand could cost around 200,000 baht, while bringing only her ashes home would cost about 100,000 baht.

The family earns a living through general labor and is struggling financially, leaving them unable to cover the costs. Lam Yai appealed to members of the public for help so her daughter could be brought home for a religious funeral.

Winai Detsri, chief executive of Trai Trueng Subdistrict Administrative Organization, visited the family to offer support and is coordinating with relevant agencies to explore ways to provide assistance.

The major obstacle is the high cost of transporting the body internationally, which is beyond the family's financial means.

People wishing to help cover the cost of bringing Pla home can donate through the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives:

Account No.: 016982971787 Account name: Nang Lam Yai Samridee

The family said the account will be closed once sufficient funds have been raised to cover the necessary expenses.

The Department of Land Transport is accepting applications for assistive equipment grants for people with disabilities injured in road accidents. Applications and supporting documents may be submitted from today until September 30, 2026. Department Director Sarawong Paitoon Phong said the Road Safety Fund has allocated revenue from the auction of auspicious license plates to help accident victims. This marks the 16th consecutive year of the program, which provides prosthetic limbs, standard and electric wheelchairs, beds, oxygen generators, and similar equipment. From 2009 to 2026, the program has assisted 21,800 people with disabilities. Each province holds ceremonies to distribute equipment, with license plate auctioneers participating in this charitable effort to reduce road accident losses and improve quality of life for disabled persons.

For fiscal year 2027, the department is allocating funds from auspicious license plate auctions for assistive equipment. Applicants must be Thai nationals who have not previously received assistance from the Road Safety Fund or other government agencies, or whose last assistance was more than three years ago (two years for prosthetic limbs or arms, unless the new equipment is a different type).

Applicants must not have violated the department's conditions for equipment grants. Applications with supporting documents may be submitted between July 15 and September 30, 2026, during government working hours at the Department of Land Transport Building 2, Floor 5, provincial transport offices nationwide, or online at https://web.dlt.go.th/rssf/.

Required documents include: national identity card or other government-issued identification; disability card (if available); photographs (at least 3x5 inches) showing the disability from at least three different angles, no more than three months old; photographs of current assistive equipment if available; photographs of the living environment (required for electric wheelchair applicants); medical treatment records from OPD cards or government documents; and evidence of insurance claims or compensation from insurance companies or victim compensation funds confirming the disability resulted from road accidents. Applications may be submitted in person or online using the provided QR code. For more information, call the department hotline at 1584 or 0-2271-8888 extensions 2511-2512.
