Jewish Cemetery in Chachoengsao Given 30-Day Removal Deadline
Authorities in Chachoengsao have given a Jewish cemetery 30 days to remove two structures deemed hazardous, while installing CCTV cameras and testing water samples for contamination amid concerns over unlicensed funeral operations.
On September 9, Anant Limsuwan, head of the Public Works Department for Samut Sub-district in Bang Khla District, Chachoengsao Province, led a survey to identify locations for two CCTV cameras at the Jewish Cemetery Thailand site, both inside and at the entrance, to monitor activity and ensure security. Related agencies have authorized the camera installation to allow continuous monitoring and address local residents' concerns. Meanwhile, the Chachoengsao Department of Natural Resources and Environment collected water samples from sources around the cemetery to test for contamination, with results expected in 30 days.
Yesterday, Samut Sub-district posted orders and announcements at the cemetery entrance, including an order prohibiting use of structures that may cause danger, covering two blue tents inside the cemetery. Violation carries jail time and fines up to 30,000 baht per day. The demolition order requires removal of both tents within 30 days of receiving the notice. The sub-district also declared the cemetery and surrounding area a nuisance zone due to unlicensed funeral operations and concerns about odor, dust, ash, and health impacts from improper corpse handling and waste management.
On the same day, Anant brought natural resources and environment officials to collect water samples from around the cemetery for testing in Chon Buri Province, with results expected within 30 days. According to the notice posted on September 7, if the company ignores the order after 30 days, it becomes a criminal case with daily fines of 30,000 baht enforced. The private company will install CCTV cameras early tomorrow morning. Whether the public will be allowed to view the footage awaits discussion with Sub-district Chief Kittipong Siluang and all relevant parties.
Tomorrow, Deputy Interior Minister Palpeer Suwannchawie will visit the Bang Khla cemetery to monitor progress on the orders and discuss resolution strategies with relevant agencies regarding structure removal, relocation of remains, and area regulation compliance.
