The Department of Mineral Resources has identified the cause of a 6.8 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia, classifying it as a strong earthquake caused by the Indo-Australia plate subducting beneath the Eurasia plate. On August 16, 2025, the Geohazard Operations Center of the Department of Mineral Resources, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, reported an earthquake that occurred on August 15, 2025, at 17:54 Bangkok time. The 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck at a depth of 172.5 kilometers with its epicenter near Sumatra Island, Indonesia, approximately 15.3 kilometers northwest of Pematangsiantar in North Sumatra Province, and was classified as a strong earthquake. The earthquake was caused by movement of the Indo-Australia tectonic plate subducting beneath the Eurasia plate. There were no initial reports of damage. The epicenter was located approximately 417 kilometers southwest of Satun Municipality, Satun Province, allowing residents in Satun, Songkhla, Trang, Phatthalung, Krabi, and Phuket provinces to feel the earthquake tremors with no reported damage.
