Historic First: 'Royal Thai Dress on the World Stage' Exhibition Opens in Paris

Thailand's historic Royal Thai Dress exhibition opened in Paris this week, showcasing over 200 pieces including royal gowns and accessories that blend traditional Thai textiles with contemporary design. The collection, developed by Queen Si

2h ago Khaosod

The historic exhibition 'La Mode en Majesté: Royal Thai Dress from Tradition to Modernity' is now open at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, France, from May 13 to November 1, 2025.

In 1960, when King Bhumibol Adulyadej made an official state visit to the United States and European countries, Queen Sirikit conceived the idea of developing the 'Royal Thai Dress' as Thailand's national costume for women. Observing that despite Thailand's beautiful and distinctive clothing culture, there was no clearly defined national dress recognized on the international stage, the Queen incorporated Thai silk and traditional local fabrics rooted in local wisdom, designing them with contemporary elegance. This became a crucial model for promoting Thai identity to international audiences and elevating Thai textiles and handicrafts to global recognition.

Today, this royal vision continues to be preserved and developed by Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, who plays a key role in conserving and advancing Thai textiles to the international fashion and contemporary design stage. She serves as patron of the 'Royal Thai Dress on the World Stage' exhibition, presented from May 13 to November 1, 2025, at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris through collaboration with the Support Institute for Thai Craft (SACIT), the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles, the Royal Thai Embassy in Paris, and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.

The exhibition celebrates the 340th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 170th anniversary of formal diplomatic ties between Thailand and France (1856–2026). It displays over 200 pieces including royal gowns, skirts, and accessories designed by French designer Pierre Balmain in collaboration with the prestigious Lesage embroidery atelier, alongside Thai designers. The exhibition focuses on the development of royal court dress and its representation on the world stage, featuring ensembles worn by Queen Sirikit, Queen Suthida, and Princess Sirivannavari, along with eight variations of the Royal Thai Dress paired with valuable Thai handicrafts. These showcase the refinement of Thai wisdom and cultural heritage sustained over centuries, and serve as momentum for proposing the 'Royal Thai Dress' as an intangible cultural heritage representative of humanity to UNESCO in 2025.

No Way Around It – Suspense Until the Final Minute: Which Channel Will Air the World Cup?

Thailand's government says securing 2026 World Cup broadcast rights is nearly impossible due to FIFA's 1.7 billion baht licensing fee, worsened by inconvenient late-night scheduling that discourages sponsors. Negotiations may still reduce t

2h ago Khaosod

The Thai government, represented by Information and Broadcasting Minister Supamat Issarapakdi, has essentially acknowledged that securing broadcast rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is nearly impossible due to licensing costs reaching 1.7 billion baht—an amount incompatible with Thailand's current economic difficulties. The tournament's scheduling in the United States, Canada, and Mexico creates a timing mismatch with Thai viewers, since matches will air during late night and early morning hours. This discourages sponsors and private businesses from investing, making advertising difficult to secure. The plans have effectively collapsed. However, Minister Supamat later stated there's still a possibility for negotiations to reduce the price to acceptable levels. Reports suggest FIFA might agree to lower rates during the final negotiations before the tournament begins, preferring a discount sale to an unsold product. Major obstacles plague this broadcast effort, particularly the North American venue's incompatible timing compared to European tournaments that suited Thailand's market better. When the World Cup moves to the Americas, local sports-related businesses gain no benefit, and entertainment venues can't organize viewing parties—how can people celebrate football over early morning drinks? These factors make broadcasting the 2026 World Cup extremely unlikely. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul deserves sympathy for his earlier promise of free World Cup access for all Thais, but circumstances prove more challenging than before. Public reaction has been mixed: football enthusiasts expressed frustration that this would be Thailand's first World Cup without free live broadcasts, while others welcomed avoiding the billion-baht licensing cost during economic hardship. If FIFA relents and drops prices, Thais might watch through normal broadcast channels. If not, viewers will resort to 'natural channels' instead. The suspense continues until the final moments.

Ministry of Commerce Elevates Agricultural Products by Partnering with MasterChef to Create Special Menus for Three Major Airlines

The Ministry of Commerce is partnering MasterChef Thailand chefs with three major airlines to create special menus featuring Thai agricultural products, boosting farmer markets and elevating the image of local ingredients globally.

2h ago Khaosod

The Ministry of Commerce is upgrading Thai agricultural products by enlisting MasterChef Thailand competitors to develop special menus for three major airlines. Withaya Manirat, Director-General of the Department of Internal Trade, revealed that the project implements Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Supachai Suthathamphand's policy to help farmers secure better markets and elevate the value and image of Thai agricultural goods. The department has selected quality raw materials from various regions and handed them to MasterChef Thailand contestants to create special menus under the concept of "Local Ingredients World Class Experiences," with results to be featured on partner airlines that reach both Thai consumers and international tourists directly.

"The heart of this project is to help absorb agricultural production from farmers and increase its value through the creativity of new-generation chefs before delivering it to passengers on all three partner airlines, which represents a promising market that creates a new image for Thai agricultural products," Withaya said.

Kitikorn Penrojanwong, Chief Executive Officer of Heliconiae H Group, stated that Heliconiae is ready to use the power of MasterChef Thailand and its food-related content to promote Thai ingredients to consumers both domestically and internationally, with chefs from MasterChef Thailand Season 7 collaborating with airline chefs to create special menus.

For this collaboration, four contestants from MasterChef Thailand Season 7—selected from the final eight competitors—will develop menus using Thai agricultural raw materials for special offerings on partner airlines, both on flights and in passenger lounges. This brings Thai ingredients to the traveler market, a consumer group with significant purchasing power and potential to expand into international markets.

Orranong Methapipat, Director of Onboard Goods and Services at Thai AirAsia, stated that Thai AirAsia is ready to expand its cooperation with the Department of Internal Trade, building on its previous work in developing Thai fruit menus for flights. In 2025, Thai AirAsia will collaborate with DIT and MasterChef to develop new menus from quality Thai ingredients, launching them from July onwards to create new experiences for passengers and expand marketing channels for Thai agricultural products.

Warangkhana Lorojanvong, Chief Executive Officer of Thai Airways International Public Company Limited, said Thai Airways will feature menus from this project in its "Chef of the Month" activity in First Class and Business Class lounges from July through October 2025, with MasterChef chefs collaborating with Thai Airways' kitchen team to develop menus reflecting the elegance, creativity, and quality of Thai raw materials, delivering a special experience to passengers.

Julin Kochareun, Senior Deputy Managing Director of Flight Network Management and Product Development at Bangkok Airways, stated that Bangkok Airways is ready to develop special food and beverage menus using Thai agricultural ingredients for both passenger lounges and onboard service, sharing the flavors and stories of Thai products with both Thai and foreign passengers while supporting farmers and the grassroots economy.

Withaya noted that the agricultural products used in the project are diverse, including fish, livestock, and agricultural crops such as three-water catfish from Songkhla Province and Phulae pineapples from Chiang Rai Province.

Commerce Ministry Cracks Down on Shell Company Accounts, Links Welfare Card Holder Data to Combat Nominee Abuse

Thailand's Commerce Ministry is digitizing corporate registration and blocking shell companies by cross-referencing welfare card data against nominee applicants, cutting suspicious registrations from 578 to just 10 in early 2025.

2h ago Khaosod

The Commerce Ministry, through the Department of Business Development, is advancing digital government initiatives to streamline services for citizens and businesses. The effort focuses on integrating corporate data across more than 320 government agencies to reduce paperwork and save 7.1 billion baht. From July 1, 2025, all government requests for corporate information will be processed digitally only, with no paper documents issued. The ministry is also implementing aggressive measures to block shell companies and identify nominees by integrating national databases. When shell company registrations from individuals begin to spread to corporate entities, applications will be immediately rejected. The ministry is cross-referencing state welfare card holder data—approximately 13.4 million people—to check if they are attempting to register as company nominees, preventing fraud or exploitation of low-income individuals' identities. Data integration includes tax records and criminal history checks, coordinated with the Revenue Department and the Police Cyber Crime Investigation Center. The ministry reviewed approximately 98,000 suspicious shell company names against a database of 980,000 corporate entities. Between January 1 and March 31, 2025, shell company registrations dropped dramatically from 578 the previous year to just 10. Eight basic data categories are now linked, including shareholder lists, company certificates, articles of association, and financial statements, which previously required citizens to obtain printed and certified copies from courts, police stations, land offices, or the Revenue Department. The benefits include speed, accuracy, and real-time data updates with greater transparency.

Thai Brands Showcase Craftsmanship and Material Innovation at Milan Design Week

Twenty-five Thai brands showcased sustainable materials and heritage craftsmanship at Milan Design Week in April, featuring innovations like mycelium tiles and recycled oyster shell products that meet global design standards.

2h ago Khaosod

The Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) led 25 carefully selected Thai brands to participate in the Slow Hand Design 2026 exhibition at Superstudio Events in Milan during April, one of the world's largest design festivals. Presented under the concept 'Heritage Reimagined: The Futuristic Thai Crafts Evolution,' the core purpose of this exhibition was to demonstrate that innovative materials rooted in local heritage can successfully meet international design standards. Each participating brand presented materials developed from agricultural and industrial waste, including mycelium tiles, tiles made from rice husks and coffee grounds, and materials cultivated from acid sulfate soil—reflecting the global design community's shift toward valuing sustainable materials with compelling stories.

The work 'SEA of Love' by AVALON ARTISAN GALLERY was among the 25 Thai brands participating, showcasing biomaterial innovation through wall sculptures made from MyraShell, a material developed from oyster shells discarded by Thailand's seafood industry. Developed in collaboration with the National Innovation Agency (NIA), Kasetsart University, and the Faculty of Fisheries at Kasetsart University, the material features distinctive properties at the materials science level, with a microporous structure that allows it to function as a scent diffuser.

This participation reflected the tangible potential of Thai materials and people in reaching the global design stage, while opening new perspectives for the international design community. The event brought together international designers, entrepreneurs, and visitors interested in viewing each brand's work, which impressively conveyed the charm of Thai craftsmanship through a contemporary lens.
