Attackers Firebomb Municipal Garage, Detonate Guard Post in Pattani
Armed attackers firebombed a municipal garage and detonated explosives at a guard post in Pattani's Panare District on August 23, destroying three vehicles in the latest assault on government facilities in Thailand's restive south.
Unidentified attackers numbering at least six persons launched a coordinated assault on Po Ming Subdistrict Municipality office in Panare District, Pattani Province, around 9:10 p.m. on August 23, in the latest incident of unrest in Thailand's southern border provinces. The assailants split into groups, with some setting fires to three municipal vehicles—a fire truck, garbage truck, and pickup truck—inside the garage, causing extensive damage. A second group planted an explosive device near the guard post, which detonated and damaged the structure. Firefighters arrived quickly and contained the blaze before it could spread to the main municipal building.
Following the incident, security authorities notified all government offices and military units in the area to increase security at their facilities and perimeters. Officials expressed concern that the insurgent group continues to target government installations and key economic sites in an apparent effort to undermine public confidence in the state. All units have been ordered to maintain heightened readiness, conduct thorough patrols of their surroundings, and be prepared to respond immediately to any further incidents.
