Woman Wins Over 100,000 Baht After Touching Sacred Tree
3h ago Khaosod

On August 23, at Ban Pai Temple in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, crowds flocked to lottery stalls after a local woman known as Chao Duean Singphanna won the three-digit straight draw with the number 615, pocketing over 100,000 baht. To give thanks, she hired ten female volunteers dressed in red to perform ritual dances at the temple, announcing her intention to seek even greater fortune in the next draw.

Local residents spoke unanimously about the spiritual significance of the shrine. A 58-year-old neighbor revealed that she had seen Chao Duean touching the roots of a sacred tamarind tree days before the winning draw, and the woman had clearly mentioned the number 615. The neighbor regretted not buying a ticket with that number, and was shocked when the lottery results matched exactly. She praised the power of the temple's spirits and said she would not miss out this round, even eyeing the red-dressed dancers for hidden lucky numbers.

Another local, a 62-year-old motorcycle taxi driver, noted that the temple had been packed with visitors ever since word spread of Chao Duean's windfall and the hiring of dancers for the ritual. He remarked that the sacred tamarind tree's roots had been polished white from so much touching, as everyone hoped to replicate the woman's life-changing fortune.

The Prime Minister linked recent unrest in Thailand's southern border provinces to government crackdowns on militants, drug trafficking, and smuggling, vowing to maintain enforcement despite retaliatory attacks.

3h ago Khaosod

Prime Minister Anuthon Chanyawong and Interior Minister addressed the unrest in the three southern border provinces on August 23 at Ubon Ratchathani, citing reports received since the previous night. The Army, the Internal Security Operations Command, and Regional Command 4 have assessed the situation following intensive operations against offenders, asset seizures, and crackdowns not only on terrorism but also on drug trafficking and smuggling of items like cigarettes.

The Prime Minister emphasized that despite some retaliation from opposing forces following the government's full enforcement of laws, the authorities will not be discouraged or change course. He stressed that enforcement against all illegal activities will continue in full.

When asked about intelligence failures, the PM said that intelligence has been continuous, but the recent unrest appears designed to create disturbance and send signals rather than targeting lives. He said this does not warrant a change in the government's approach. On negotiations, he stated that dialogue efforts are already underway and should not be disrupted, but if the opposing side continues attacks, talks will proceed separately. The government will continue protecting citizens and property to prevent destruction of towns and communities.

Prime Minister Anuthong Charnweeragul held a press conference in Ubon Ratchathani on August 23 after visiting Sergeant First Class Chaonarong Wongchana, a member of an explosive ordnance disposal team who was injured while on duty after stepping on a PMN-2 anti-personnel mine near the Sano Pass in Ubon Ratchathani province.

Regarding security policy along the Thai-Cambodian border, the prime minister stated that the military remains fully prepared and ready at all times. He and Defence Minister Adulay Boonchumcharoen, along with Army Commander Pana Khlawyplodtuk, had conducted inspections along the border and found that everything is in order and properly prepared.

Anuthong urged the public not to worry, emphasizing that the government and armed forces continue to fully protect Thai territory. He said there are no signs of any violence occurring during this period.

When asked whether the government would provide full care to the injured soldier's family, the prime minister confirmed that the government will provide complete support to wounded and fallen heroes serving the nation. Assistance will come from the Prime Minister's Office and the Defence Ministry, with all available measures taken to ensure full compensation for those affected.

Asked what special precautions are needed along the border during Cambodia's election period, Anuthong replied that the military is always prepared and vigilant. He emphasized that the capability and readiness to protect national sovereignty are never taken lightly, and expressed confidence in all three armed forces, the police, and local administrators responsible for border residents.

"We are confident that we are not at a disadvantage," the prime minister said, adding that he could not discuss specific measures as they are matters of national security.

When asked whether soldiers could eventually be relieved from this constant state of readiness, the prime minister simply replied, "Yes."

Sisaket United held its launch event on Sunday, August 23, 2025, at the Gallery Design Hotel in Sisaket Province, backed by major sponsors and partners. Club adviser Thanet Khruarut praised the province's passion for football and credited fans as crucial to the team's rise to Thai League 1. "Sisaket is Thailand's football city. I feel the passion and devotion of our people. This promotion belongs to all residents of Sisaket Province," he said.

Khruarut expressed confidence in the team's preparation, citing strong coaching staff and a well-selected squad assembled by coach Somchai Chuaybunchum. "Based on our successful preseason, I am confident we can finish mid-table," he added. The team released its 2026/27 squad roster featuring both Thai and foreign players, including goalkeeper Victor Golas, midfielder Hikaru Matsui, and striker Davinson.

A key highlight was the unveiling of the new match kit under the Ego brand, which marks the fifth consecutive season as kit sponsor. The home shirt, priced at 590 baht, features the concept "Fire Spirit," blending flame patterns representing Sisaket United with a checkered pattern honoring the history of predecessor club Sisaket FC. The design merges both identities into one symbol of pride for fans and residents, reinforcing Sisaket's image as Thailand's true sports city.

Army Denies Helicopter Fired on Teenagers in Jae Nae

The Thai Army denied allegations that a helicopter fired on teenagers in Jae Nae district, saying aircraft in the southern border region are used only for patrol and reconnaissance, never for armed attacks.

Army Denies Helicopter Fired on Teenagers in Jae Nae
4h ago Khaosod

On August 23, army spokesman Vindhya Suwaree addressed claims made by a member of parliament through Facebook, citing reports from residents in Jae Nae district that a group of teenagers was injured by gunfire from a helicopter. Suwaree said the information did not align with facts, either tactically or strategically, because army aircraft in the southern border region are deployed solely for aerial patrol and reconnaissance and have never been used to attack targets with armed helicopters.

Regarding the use of force against violent offenders in the southern border region, officials treat it as a last resort, as evidenced by past operations such as law enforcement against warrant suspects. If there is no resistance or attack on officials, no weapons will be used by authorities. The military confirmed that any use of force follows self-defense principles within legal and international frameworks.

Suwaree criticized the presentation of one-sided, unverified information, questioning why proper channels and responsible agencies were not consulted. He noted that many situations in the southern border region cannot be judged from a single account and require multiple perspectives. The spokesman warned that such reports could alarm the public and damage morale and operational effectiveness of officials during a crisis.

He also noted that state agencies are increasingly criticized based on unfiltered information and urged the public and media to exercise caution, as such patterns may constitute a media strategy to manipulate public opinion and foster negative perceptions of state officials and institutions.

On August 23, 2025, Lieutenant Colonel Sarawut Nuchnarote, superintendent of Bang Lamung Police Station, ordered an investigation team to track down a suspect following the release of CCTV footage on a community Facebook page showing a man allegedly stealing items from a market. Police discovered the suspect was hiding in an abandoned house in Moo 1, Bang Lamung Subdistrict, Bang Lamung District, Chachoengsao Province, and arrested Inthanon, nicknamed 'M Khiuyak', 33, a local resident.

Police recovered multiple items including a 24-centimetre stainless steel knife, a black t-shirt, short denim trousers, a pair of flip-flops, and four plastic power outlet boxes. During the arrest, the suspect wielded the knife and attempted to stab officers to escape, but police subdued him and secured the weapon.

Investigation revealed that some of the clothing matched what the suspect wore on the day of the incident. The four plastic outlet boxes were found along a road in Bang Lamung Soi 21/1, which the suspect led officers to recover. Police charged him with theft occurring at night and receiving stolen property, as well as attempting to injure an officer performing his duty. On August 23, 2569, inspection and suppression officers from Region 3 Customs Office conducted patrols in Phitsanulok province to prevent illegal agricultural imports. They discovered a suspicious 22-wheeled trailer on Highway 11 between Inthburi and Chiang Mai and conducted a thorough search.

The inspection revealed 30,000 kilograms of black sticky rice originating from abroad, valued at over 1.2 million baht. However, the shipment lacked proper customs documentation, violating the Customs Act of 2560. Officers seized the cargo and transferred it to Mae Sod Customs checkpoint for legal action.

This operation aligns with the Customs Department's policy to strengthen enforcement against illegal agricultural imports in the northern region, protecting national interests and ensuring fair treatment of law-abiding businesses. The Customs Department continues to execute its "Next Drive Customs" strategy, positioning itself as a social protector by safeguarding state revenue, legitimate traders, and public health while combating illegal goods trafficking through intelligence and technology.

Assumption United Wins Coke Cup U17 Championship
5h ago Khaosod

Assumption United has claimed the Coke Cup U17 Thailand Football Championship 2026 title and a one-million-baht prize, along with a pathway to international youth football development. The championship final took place on August 23, 2026, at Suphachalasai Stadium, marking the conclusion of the inaugural Coke Cup in its new format, which aims to develop Thai youth footballers comprehensively through collaboration between Coca-Cola Thailand and the Football Association of Thailand. The tournament attracted nearly 192 teams from six regions across Thailand competing in 195 matches from May to August, designed to identify and nurture promising talent for Thailand's national team.

The return of the Coke Cup marks a new chapter in youth football competition with a history spanning over four decades, dating back to Coca-Cola's support for Thai football since 1979 and the championship's launch in 1981. This year's U-17 format aligns with current youth footballer development pathways, positioning the competition as more than just a championship venue but as a platform for discovery, development, and opportunity for young players to pursue professional football and national team careers. Throughout the season, youth footballers from across Thailand experienced intense competition and continuous skill development, with teams selected from schools and institutions recognized by the Football Association competing on the same stage.

Ritima Rackyan, General Manager and Vice President of Franchise Business at Coca-Cola Thailand, stated: "Coca-Cola is proud to see the Coke Cup return and create opportunities for Thai youth footballers in the Coke Cup U17 Thailand Football Championship 2026. Throughout the season, we witnessed the determination, ability, and dreams of young players from across the country competing at their full potential. The return of the Coke Cup is not merely about reviving a historically significant competition but about creating a platform that helps new generation footballers develop themselves and see a clearer path to their dreams. Coca-Cola will continue to support youth and Thai football to inspire and create opportunities for the next generation of footballers."

Nualphan Lamsam, President of the Football Association of Thailand under Royal Patronage, stated: "The Coke Cup U17 Thailand Football Championship 2026 represents an important step in developing Thai youth football. We have seen athletes from all six regions have the opportunity to compete at the national level, and we have witnessed the potential of many young talents who have the chance to advance to the national team. The competition throughout the season does not end with finding a champion but is also a process of continuous discovery and development through the association's system, particularly using the T+MASC model to systematically track and develop players. We believe that laying the foundation from the U-17 level will be crucial in producing quality footballers and increasing opportunities for the national team."

Nan Floods Spark Debate Over Land-Use Policy

Nan Floods Spark Debate Over Land-Use Policy
5h ago Khaosod

A severe flood struck Nan Province, with flash water sweeping through homes across multiple districts, causing at least four deaths and extensive damage. Debate has emerged over whether the devastation resulted purely from heavy rainfall or from landscape modifications that worsened conditions, including the clearing of hillsides that removed water-retention points, monoculture farming, forest clearing for agriculture, and land changes to accommodate tourism. While all these factors are interconnected, the question of accountability remains unanswered. Blaming local residents is unjust, as many of these problems stem from state policies on economic planning, forest concessions, private-sector economic expansion, and GDP-focused corporate performance that ignored environmental consequences. The government must review and systematically address these issues. Unfortunately, no government has seriously prioritized environmental protection—not just concerning Nan's forests and barren hillsides, but also the Mekong dams upstream from Thailand affecting local ecosystems, the Mun River's poisoning from mining in neighboring countries, and PM2.5 pollution harming public health in northern regions, yet no clear plan or serious action has emerged. The government must clarify its concrete plans and genuine strategies. While ministers, including Deputy Prime Minister Yossanan Wongsawadi and Public Works Minister Jetsada Thaisettha, visited flood areas—spraying water to clean roads and carrying survivors—their efforts are commendable and show dedication. However, public expectations demand more, including accurate, clear, and timely early-warning systems rather than evacuation alerts after water breaches. Deputy Prime Minister Yossanan, overseeing public works with emphasis on science, should push for this implementation. The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, with its budget and manpower, should plan and manage prevention from the outset rather than continue current inadequate measures. The government must demonstrate courage and capability in environmental and disaster management, or the public will bear the consequences.
