Prime Minister Anuthong Charnweeragul held a press conference in Ubon Ratchathani on August 23 after visiting Sergeant First Class Chaonarong Wongchana, a member of an explosive ordnance disposal team who was injured while on duty after stepping on a PMN-2 anti-personnel mine near the Sano Pass in Ubon Ratchathani province.

Regarding security policy along the Thai-Cambodian border, the prime minister stated that the military remains fully prepared and ready at all times. He and Defence Minister Adulay Boonchumcharoen, along with Army Commander Pana Khlawyplodtuk, had conducted inspections along the border and found that everything is in order and properly prepared.

Anuthong urged the public not to worry, emphasizing that the government and armed forces continue to fully protect Thai territory. He said there are no signs of any violence occurring during this period.

When asked whether the government would provide full care to the injured soldier's family, the prime minister confirmed that the government will provide complete support to wounded and fallen heroes serving the nation. Assistance will come from the Prime Minister's Office and the Defence Ministry, with all available measures taken to ensure full compensation for those affected.

Asked what special precautions are needed along the border during Cambodia's election period, Anuthong replied that the military is always prepared and vigilant. He emphasized that the capability and readiness to protect national sovereignty are never taken lightly, and expressed confidence in all three armed forces, the police, and local administrators responsible for border residents.

"We are confident that we are not at a disadvantage," the prime minister said, adding that he could not discuss specific measures as they are matters of national security.

When asked whether soldiers could eventually be relieved from this constant state of readiness, the prime minister simply replied, "Yes."

On August 23, army spokesman Vindhya Suwaree addressed claims made by a member of parliament through Facebook, citing reports from residents in Jae Nae district that a group of teenagers was injured by gunfire from a helicopter. Suwaree said the information did not align with facts, either tactically or strategically, because army aircraft in the southern border region are deployed solely for aerial patrol and reconnaissance and have never been used to attack targets with armed helicopters.

Regarding the use of force against violent offenders in the southern border region, officials treat it as a last resort, as evidenced by past operations such as law enforcement against warrant suspects. If there is no resistance or attack on officials, no weapons will be used by authorities. The military confirmed that any use of force follows self-defense principles within legal and international frameworks.

Suwaree criticized the presentation of one-sided, unverified information, questioning why proper channels and responsible agencies were not consulted. He noted that many situations in the southern border region cannot be judged from a single account and require multiple perspectives. The spokesman warned that such reports could alarm the public and damage morale and operational effectiveness of officials during a crisis.

He also noted that state agencies are increasingly criticized based on unfiltered information and urged the public and media to exercise caution, as such patterns may constitute a media strategy to manipulate public opinion and foster negative perceptions of state officials and institutions.

On August 23, 2025, Lieutenant Colonel Sarawut Nuchnarote, superintendent of Bang Lamung Police Station, ordered an investigation team to track down a suspect following the release of CCTV footage on a community Facebook page showing a man allegedly stealing items from a market. Police discovered the suspect was hiding in an abandoned house in Moo 1, Bang Lamung Subdistrict, Bang Lamung District, Chachoengsao Province, and arrested Inthanon, nicknamed 'M Khiuyak', 33, a local resident.

Police recovered multiple items including a 24-centimetre stainless steel knife, a black t-shirt, short denim trousers, a pair of flip-flops, and four plastic power outlet boxes. During the arrest, the suspect wielded the knife and attempted to stab officers to escape, but police subdued him and secured the weapon.

Investigation revealed that some of the clothing matched what the suspect wore on the day of the incident. The four plastic outlet boxes were found along a road in Bang Lamung Soi 21/1, which the suspect led officers to recover. Police charged him with theft occurring at night and receiving stolen property, as well as attempting to injure an officer performing his duty. He was taken into custody pending further legal proceedings.

Assumption United has claimed the Coke Cup U17 Thailand Football Championship 2026 title and a one-million-baht prize, along with a pathway to international youth football development. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul returned from visits to Australia and New Zealand to face urgent crises requiring immediate attention.

Beyond widespread flooding affecting multiple areas in northern Thailand, particularly Nan Province, violence and unrest have erupted across the southern border region as well.

Coordinated attacks occurred simultaneously across three provinces—Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat—involving the burning of vehicle tires and government vehicles, destruction of signal towers and closed-circuit cameras, bombings at subdistrict administrative offices, robberies, and arson at convenience stores. The Fourth Region Internal Security Operations Command reported a total of 51 incidents.

In response, the Prime Minister convened a security meeting led by Defence Minister General Anudit Boontharmcharoen, the Army Commander, the Fourth Region Army Area Commander, and civilian administration officials.

Following the security meeting, which lasted over an hour, the Prime Minister ordered officials to provide care for those injured in the violence and to enforce the law strictly.

Meanwhile, all relevant security agencies in the region—the military, police, and civilian administration—have elevated their preparedness to the highest level, maintaining strict vigilance over the area, particularly in alerting the public.

Violence and unrest in the southern border region remain deeply concerning, with no signs of improvement on the horizon.

Since becoming Prime Minister, Anutin has demonstrated commitment to resolving the southern insurgency and establishing lasting peace, including appointing a peace dialogue committee led by civilian officials.

However, following a militant attack on a checkpoint in Narathiwat on July 22, 2025, in which five rangers were killed, the dialogue process was indefinitely postponed, affecting momentum for peace talks.

Since then, law enforcement has intensified and become more forceful. There have also been cases of alleged extrajudicial killings of suspects in the region, which, while not definitively established, have undermined public confidence—particularly regarding judicial fairness.

Given the 51 violent incidents that just occurred, in addition to strict law enforcement and maximum state preparedness, authorities must exercise extreme caution. Their actions must not create conditions that further erode public confidence and trust in the region.
