PM Links Southern Unrest to Crackdowns on Militants, Drugs
The Prime Minister linked recent unrest in Thailand's southern border provinces to government crackdowns on militants, drug trafficking, and smuggling, vowing to maintain enforcement despite retaliatory attacks.
Prime Minister Anuthon Chanyawong and Interior Minister addressed the unrest in the three southern border provinces on August 23 at Ubon Ratchathani, citing reports received since the previous night. The Army, the Internal Security Operations Command, and Regional Command 4 have assessed the situation following intensive operations against offenders, asset seizures, and crackdowns not only on terrorism but also on drug trafficking and smuggling of items like cigarettes.
The Prime Minister emphasized that despite some retaliation from opposing forces following the government's full enforcement of laws, the authorities will not be discouraged or change course. He stressed that enforcement against all illegal activities will continue in full.
When asked about intelligence failures, the PM said that intelligence has been continuous, but the recent unrest appears designed to create disturbance and send signals rather than targeting lives. He said this does not warrant a change in the government's approach. On negotiations, he stated that dialogue efforts are already underway and should not be disrupted, but if the opposing side continues attacks, talks will proceed separately. The government will continue protecting citizens and property to prevent destruction of towns and communities.
