Bang Kla Residents Demand Investigation Into Jewish Cemetery Over Illegal Burials

Bang Kla residents have filed a formal letter requesting an investigation into the Jewish Cemetery Thailand operation, citing concerns about ongoing illegal burials. Local residents say they are forced to take detours around the cemetery due to safety and environmental worries.

The Jewish community in Thailand began establishing a new cemetery called Jewish Cemetery Thailand in Sub-district Semet Tai, Bang Kla District, Chachoengsao Province, designed to accommodate approximately 1,200 deceased members. The project sparked significant public criticism.

After investigation, the Bang Kla District Officer found that the cemetery's location does not comply with regulations under the 2543 Ministerial Regulations issued under the Cemeteries and Crematoria Act of 2528, and refused to renew the operating license. Recently, the Sub-district Chief, village headman, and community representatives submitted a letter to District Officer Aikrach Krittayapong and Police Lieutenant Colonel Sumit Phromtong, Commander of Bang Kla Police Station, expressing concern about illegal burials continuing in the area.

Community representatives stated that burials have taken place illegally at the site. Residents are worried about environmental impacts, as the cemetery is located near agricultural areas, residential communities, water sources, kindergartens, schools, and health centers—areas that residents use daily. The District Officer explained that officials are currently gathering evidence and documentation to take appropriate legal action and have assured residents that surveillance has been established to prevent further burials. A meeting with relevant agencies and residents is scheduled for the following day to discuss legal options and community concerns.
