BPT Pipeline Company Addresses Oil Contamination in Bangkok Drainage System
Oil contamination discovered in Bangkok's drainage system near Khlong Toei district prompted pipeline operator BPT to pledge cooperation with authorities on investigation and remediation, saying it will accept liability if found responsible
BPT Pipeline Company has issued a statement regarding oil contamination discovered in Bangkok's drainage system near Fuel Street and under the Rama III elevated road bridge, at the border of Khlong Toei and Yan Nawa districts. The company says it is monitoring the situation closely and is prepared to cooperate with government and private agencies to investigate the cause and implement concrete solutions, with priority given to community safety and environmental protection. If investigation determines that BPT is responsible for any part of the damage, the company said it will accept liability under its insurance policies. BPT owns the pipeline network transporting oil from the Bang Chak refinery to Chon Buri storage and onward to airport fuel depots at Don Muang and Suvarnabhumi, as well as to the Bang Pa-in inland storage facility. The affected area falls within one section of this pipeline, which BPT has licensed to Bangkok Fuel Pipeline and Logistics Company (BFPL) since January 1, 2023. BPT currently operates a multi-product pipeline service transporting fuel through underground pipelines in northern Thailand only, delivering oil from Bang Pa-in storage to Phichit and Lampang storage facilities using modern and safe systems meeting international standards. Pipeline transportation is recognized worldwide as the safest transport method. BPT's system meets international pipeline standards in material selection, design and construction, and is equipped with cathodic protection to prevent rust and corrosion. The company conducts regular integrity inspections using Pipeline Inspection Gauge (PIG) technology and monitors for leaks using SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems. BPT's pipeline has been certified to international standards with an expected operational lifespan of up to 80 years, ensuring the company maintains the highest service and safety standards.
